Effective Email Campaigns

Published: 08 Jul 2009

Because email is cheap, it only makes sense to utilize this tool for your marketing campaign. Email campaigns are good for a number of reasons. These campaigns allow you to maintain regular contact with customers and potential customers. You can automatical send your email advertisements so that you can make the most of your time and efforts. Email campaigns also create marketing pieces that can easily be shared with others as recipients forward and your campaign to their contacts who may be interested as well.

But while email campaigns are a cheap means of advertisement, they must also be effective. Before sending bulk emails to your mailing list, you should test the effectiveness of your campaign. Offline marketing campaigns go through extensive checklists before implementing their marketing strategies, looking over items such as mail size, format, and personalization and the response rate associated with each. While email marketing does not require the same thoroughness to cut costs, there are a few simple guidelines that allow email campaigns to be more time effective and generate greater user response.

Maintain a control message. Because no message will be perfect the first time around, you will want to make changes as you figure out what works best for your marketing strategy, Make only small changes when you feel they are necessary, rather than changing the entire message at once.By keeping the original message, you can easily compare response rates to see what changes are effective.

Test significant differences. As you test what marketing strategies work best for your product, be sure that you are testing items that differ greatly from your control group or control message. Try sending one email campaign with a discount and one without, then compare the response rates.

Test formatting. Web users receive a multitude of emails with poorly formatted HTML. Because the messages are not displayed correctly when they are viewed, they are ignored by potential customers. Before you send out your email campaign, check that your formatting will open correctly in other other email software.

Start with the basics. Before you worry about making a fancy message to send to your mailing list, make sure that the basic information is both complete and correct. Use effective titles in your subject line. Note that you are the sender. Leaving either the sender or subject line blank is an easy way to eliminate user response.
