October 30th
Halloween Family Dance
It's time for our next Family Dance!
Come join us this Saturday, Oct. 30, for a Halloween
extravaganza.
Costumes are encouraged!
Same location: Swannanoa 4-H Education Center (see the website
for
directions:
www.diane-silver.com/familydance.html).
Note: we will be dancing in the Rec. Hall behind the main
lodge, where
we usually dance, because the 4-H Camp has a user group in for
the
weekend. The Rec. Hall is a great space with a new wooden dance
floor
that was put in last year, and it will be great!
5:00 p.m.:
Potluck dinner -- (Save a tree -- please bring your
own
plates and silverware).
6:00 - 7:45:
Early dance, aimed at families with children under
10. Long
sets, scatter dances, singing games, etc. The same
hootin'-n-hollerin'
fun we had at the Family Dances last season.
7:45 - 8:15:
Break for the band and potluck dessert. --
Please bring
a little supply of Halloween Candy and we'll do pseudo
trick-or-treating
in the form of a Grand March to show off our costumes and a
parade past
the candy table to take one piece of each kind.
8:15 - 10:00:
Late shift, aimed at beginning adults and
families
with teens and pre-teens. The late shift will be an
introduction to
modern contras and squares.
A few characteristics of modern contras and squares that
sometimes don't
go over well with younger children:
-- Dancers need to know right from left
-- Dances have gender-specific roles (ladies do this, gents do
that).
So, for example, if two girls dance together, one will have to
"be the
gent," and be able to respond to the calls correctly.
-- Dances include interacting with neighbors as well as your
partner, so
dancers need to be comfortable dancing with strangers.
If the late shift is too advanced for your kids, they are
welcome to
stay and enjoy the music, play on the sidelines with your
supervision,
do some clogging (stomping, clapping), etc.
We're giving this format a try in an effort to meet the
interests and
needs of more families, based on feedback from last season:
-- Earlier ending to accommodate bedtimes for little ones.
-- "Real" contras and squares for adults who want to learn in a
friendly, no-pressure atmosphere.
-- A family dance that's not geared just for little ones, so
teenagers
will enjoy it too.
Come early, come late, or stay for the whole evening!
October 30 (Saturday) CONTRA ... Monster Mash Contra Dance at River Falls Lodge above Marietta, SC in northern Greenville County, 8 - 11 PM. Presented

We set up at about 5:00 and have a covered dish supper at 6:30 before
the evening dance. Beginners dance session is at 7:30 and the dance is
at 8:00. Please come early and help if you can. Dances at River Falls
Lodge are $8. Two dollars of the admission fee is used for River Falls
Lodge building renovations. There is no charge for kids. (Advanced Tickets Only) Info: 828-697-1082
