There are moments in the lives of those of us who seek truth and beauty that leave us forever changed. For yoga enthusiasts, one such moment was the recent Yoga Journal conference in Estes Park, CO. in September 2005 where BKS Iyengar began his teaching and U.S. tour for his new book Light on Life. As a yoga student, I was first introduced to the Iyengar method in 1977. The intelligence behind the practice gave me support, stability and freedom from nagging back and shoulder pain. Having myself studied and performed the basic yoga poses thousands of times over the past 25 years, I still scurried between poses to cryptically jot down each renewed or deeper insight, refusing complacency and thirsting for the larger vision of yoga, for the truth of being. I have never been disappointed by Mr. Iyengar, but rather awed by his simple yet profound teachings, his keen observations, and his deep sense of compassion and wisdom. I am still puzzling over his comment that we either breathe and draw oxygen from our brain or breathe and draw oxygen from our lungs.

The Healing Power of the Mind

Can what we think actually have an effect on healing? Bodies do react to the thoughts you make. Our psychological/emotional state affects the endocrine system. For example, the emotion of fear is related to adrenaline. If no feeling of fear exists there is no adrenaline and the same applies in reverse- no adrenaline, no fear. They work in relationship to each other. Wherever a thought goes there is a body chemical reaction. The hypothalamus, the emotional center of the brain, transforms emotions into physical response. The receptor of neuropeptides, the hypothalamus controls the body's appetite, blood sugar levels, body temperature, adrenal and pituitary glands, heart, lung, digestive and circulatory systems. Neuropeptides, the chemical messenger hormones, carry emotions back and forth between the mind and body. They link perception in the brain to the body via organs, hormones and cellular activity. Neuropeptides influence every major section of the immune system, so the body and mind do work together as one unit.

Choosing and Using Massage Stones: A Primer

I'm sure you have seen many places offering stone warmers with or without stones for extremely high prices. These warmers are very heavy and cost several dollars to ship them. Many of them are nothing more than an electric roaster with a sticker on them, that deems it as an official stone warmer. Insurance companies usually require that you let them know if you are using hot stones for massage in your practice. Most of them require that you do not heat them above 120 degrees Fahrenheit. You can save yourself money by going to a local department store and purchasing a crock pot or electric roaster. If you use a crock pot, use it on a low setting and check the stones frequently to feel how warm they are before placing them on a client. I personally use this method. Sometimes I need to let the stones cool a minute before placing them on someone. Generally if you can check them on your wrist like when you check a baby's bottle then you should be fine. If using an electric roaster, then you will want to try to get one that you can set the temperature at or below 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
