¡¡¡¡¡¡OK SPAIN!!!!!!!

Spain abounds with culture, from exquisite architecture and painting to tantilizing food and wine. Roman aqueducts, Islamic palaces and Gothic cathedrals are in abundance throughout the country. Spain has been the home of some of the world's great artists - El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, Dalí, Picasso - and has museums and galleries to match. All this, and the country vibrates with music of flamenco.

THIS WEEK: GRANADA
I can't say enough about this great city. Granada is the capital of the province, and was the last Moorish capital on the Iberian peninsula. Situated in the eastern part of the region of Andalusia abundant geographical and scenic diversity charactizes the land. Its unique history has bestowed it with an artistic grandeur embracing everything from Moorish palaces to Christian Renaissance treasures.

The city of Granada has been shaped by the hills, where the old districts in the Albaizín and the Alhambra were founded, brimming with steep, narrow streets, beautiful nooks and crannies, and marvelous landscapes.

Because it was the last city reconquered by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492, Granada has an unmistakable Arab flavour. Its cuisine, crafts and urban layout are a consequence of the city's glorious history. The Albaizín, declared a World Heritage Site, together with the Alhambra and the Generalife (gardens) have been an important cultural center for centuries during Muslim and Christian rule. Nowadays the city boasts an enviable calendar of cultural and leisure events including, music, cinema and theatre seasons and festivals, along with permanent and temporary exhibitions.

Because of its marvellous climate, its beaches, and its snowy mountains, Granada is a unique destination for cultural, adventure and business travel.

Here are a few highly recommended hotels in Granada, Spain. I stayed at the Hotel Andalucía Center (a lovely modern hotel with all amenities, and the best breakfast imaginable, listed last). However, I have personally visited all of these, including touring the rooms. I can give all a hearty "thumbs up"!

María "La Canastera's" Flamenco Cuevas + More!

The Sacromonte is a hill next to the Albaizín which is the old Arabic quarter of Granada. The Albayzín is situated in directly in front the Alhambra. To the right of the Albayzín is a large hill which forms the neighbourhood of the Sacromonte. For many centuries it has been populated by the gypsy community. The rock structure in this area is a mixture of clay and round pebbles which are soft enough to excavate and cohesive and stable enough to form the walls of a cave.
Consequently most of the dwellings in this area are caves.

The mixture of Arabic influences combined with many centuries of gypsy influence eventually created flamenco. Some of the best flamenco performers turned their caves into public places where visitors could come to hear and see flamenco in its natural habitat. Knowadays the caves have electricity and modern plumbing although these modern facilities have only been introduced in the the last 50 years or so. The interior of the flamenco caves are normally adorned with copperware and photos of previous moments of glory.

OPENING NIGHT FESTIVAL PERFORMANCE!

María Bermúdez y Sonidos Gitanos
"Streets of Flamenco"
Saturday July 28th, 2007
7:30 p.m.

Sólo Flamenco is proud to announce the return of Sonidos Gitanos to the Portland Stage.

The international performances of Sonidos Gitanos have brought great critical acclaim in Europe, North America, and the Far East. The Los Angeles Times said: "There is blistering and then there is hot! Flamenco dancer María Bermúdez and her company of musicians and dancers nearly torched the stage with their high combustible yet tradition-bound program Sonidos Gitanos. White-hot passion coalesced with flying feet and fluttering fringe as adrenaline soared in this production.”

Jerez de la Frontera, known as La Cuna del Flamenco (the cradle of Flamenco) has been inaugurated as La Ciudad del Flamenco (the city of Flamenco) by the country of Spain. Jerez prides itself in bearing its children singing and dancing straight from the womb and is noted for its devotion to the roots of pure Flamenco song, dance and music.

Bermúdez fulfills her obligation as Artistic Director and lead dancer by highlighting the most accomplished and sometimes-unusual artists this region of Spain has to offer.
