Current
Research on Eating Disorders:
Importance of multiple purging methods in the classification
of eating disorder subtypes. Authors: Haedt AA, Edler C,
Heatherton TF, Keel PK. OBJECTIVE: To examine two
assumptions implicit in the subtyping of eating disorders:
(1) purging behaviors are interchangeable, and (2) a primary
distinction exists between the presence vs. absence of any
means of purging. METHOD: Data from a longitudinal study of
health and eating patterns were used to compare women who
reported self-induced vomiting, laxative abuse, or their
combination. Further comparisons were made among women who
used multiple purging methods (MP), a single purging method
(SP), and randomly selected controls who never purged.
RESULTS:: Vomiting and laxative abuse were associated with
similar levels of eating pathology whereas their combination
was associated with greater eating pathology. MP women
reported significantly greater eating pathology compared to
SP women who reported significantly greater eating pathology
compared to controls. Differences were maintained at 10-year
follow-up. CONCLUSION: Purging behaviors may be
interchangeable but the use of multiple purging methods is
associated with greater severity over time. (c) 2006 by

Improving Eating Disorder Treatment and Outcomes:
Research Results
Show Online Programs Significantly Reduce Depression, Binge
Eating and Bulimia Symptoms
Recent clinical outcome study results show that the
MySelfHelp.com online, interactive programs for depression,
binge eating, and bulimia are highly effective. Here is a
summary of the study results:
DEPRESSION RESULTS: Those who used MySelfHelp.com programs
for three months experienced a 42% decrease in depression.
The group that used the programs showed significant
improvements in other psychological symptoms, such as
anxiety. Improvements continued at six-month follow-up.
BINGE EATING AND BULIMIA RESULTS: Those who used
MySelfHelp.com programs for three months experienced a 43%
decrease in binge eating and a 51% reduction in purging
(self-induced vomiting and use of laxatives). These
improvements continued on at six-month follow-up. Continued
Reduction in Bingeing and Purging: At six months, those who
used MySelfHelp programs showed a 45% reduction in binge
eating and a 59% reduction in purging.
INSOMNIA RESULTS: MySelfHelp.com also recently completed a
clinical outcome study on the Conquer Insomnia program and
the results show that the online program is also highly
effective.
Positive results such as these are leading more providers,
from solo practitioners to residential treatment centers, to
recommend the use of interactive self-help programs to their
clients.
Family of Programs
Developed through NIMH Funding:
MySelfHelp.com programs provide online help and support for
your clients and their family members 24 hours a day, and
can serve as a valuable adjunct to the treatment you
provide. These programs encourage and engage your clients
with interactive exercises, personalized feedback, and
reminders to complete assignments, practice new techniques,
and stay in touch and share results with you. A free family
support program engages and supports the family in the
recovery process – educating them about the illness, the
importance of therapy, and how they can help and support
their loved one and themselves.
The MySelfHelp.com family of
interactive, online, self-help programs includes Defeating
Depression, Take Control of Bulimia, Stop Binge Eating, Stress
Management, Overcoming Guilt, Working on Low Self-Esteem,
Coping with Grief, Caring for Your Loved One, Help for
Compulsive Shopping, Conquer Insomnia, and Hope for HIV and
Depression, as well as a moderated member Discussion Board.
MySelfHelp.com programs were developed in part through grants
from the National Institute of Mental Health, and these
programs are designed to complement therapy, reinforce
treatment goals, and improve treatment outcomes.

Radical Recovery: A
Manifesto of Eating Disorder Pride by Dr. Christian Kraatz.
Eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating
disorder are some of the most deadly mental illnesses; however, research into the nature of these conditions and
possible treatments remains virtually unfunded. The author
states as a result,
there is no standard model of treatment for eating disorders
and no definitive information on the number of people in the
U.S. who suffer from one or more of these conditions.
Radical Recovery openly addresses the national epidemic of
eating disorders and offers practical suggestions for how to
effectively promote awareness and change in a more
responsible and compassionate way. Issues addressed include
success rates for eating disorders treatment, current
research, mortality and eating disorders, the presence of
eating disorders in both sexes and all ages, overcoming
social stigma, and eating disorders activism. About the
Author: Dr. Christian L. Kraatz is a Senior Lecturer in
Philosophy at Indiana University-Purdue University
Indianapolis. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy
from Purdue University. For more information visit:

Marketing
Tips:
Increase Referrals with a Second Office Listing on
EDReferral.com:
If you have 2 offices, you can list the second
office for only $35 for the entire year--that works out to less
than $3 a month. Many
therapists have commented that this has worked out well for
them in terms of increased referrals.
Also make sure that your listing is up-to-date and
covers all areas of the eating disorder field where you provide
treatment. This
will help when people are searching for you on our site. For
more information visit
www.EDReferral.com
or email
edreferral@aol.com.
Banner
Advertising—thanks to all who have supported us with a banner

We only allowed 2 banners on every page except the home
page and in just a few short months, they are almost all taken!
Thank you to everyone for their support. For more
information on any advertising space still available email
edreferral@aol.com.
