Current
Research on Eating Disorders:
Features associated with
excessive exercise in women with eating disorders.
Researchers: Shroff H, Reba L, Thornton LM, Tozzi F,
Klump KL, Berrettini WH, Brandt H, Crawford S, Crow S,
Fichter MM, Goldman D, Halmi KA, Johnson C, Kaplan AS, Keel
P, LaVia M, Mitchell J, Rotondo A, Strober M, Treasure J,
Woodside DB, Kaye WH, Bulik CM. OBJECTIVE: Excessive
exercise and motor restlessness are observed in a
substantial number of patients with eating disorders. This
trait has been studied extensively among animal models of
activity anorexia nervosa (AN) and may hold particular
interest as an endophenotype for AN. We explored features
associated with excessive exercise across subtypes of eating
disorders. METHOD: Participants were female probands and
affected female relatives from the multi-site international
Price Foundation Genetic Studies with diagnoses of AN,
bulimia nervosa (BN), and both AN and BN or eating disorder
not otherwise specified (ED-NOS) (N=1,857). Excessive
exercise was defined based on responses to the Structured
Interview for Anorexic and Bulimic Disorders (SIAB).
RESULTS: Among the eating disorder diagnostic groups,
excessive exercise was most common among the purging subtype
of AN. Individuals who reported excessive exercise also
reported lower minimum BMI, younger age at interview, higher
scores on anxiety, perfectionism, and eating disorder
symptom measures, more obsessions and compulsions, and
greater persistence. CONCLUSION: Excessive exercise may be
associated particularly with the purging subtype of AN as
well as with a constellation of anxious/obsessional
temperament and personality characteristics among women with
eating disorders. Copyright (c) 2006 by Wiley Periodicals,

An attachment insecurity
model of negative affect among women seeking treatment for
an eating disorder. Researchers: Tasca GA, Kowal J,
Balfour L, Ritchie K, Virley B, Bissada H. University of
Ottawa, Canada; Ottawa Hospital, Canada. The purpose of this
study was to propose and test a model of attachment
insecurity in a clinical sample of 268 eating disordered
women. Structural relationships among attachment insecurity,
BMI, perceived pressure to diet, body dissatisfaction,
restrained eating, and negative affect were assessed. A
heterogeneous sample of treatment seeking women with a
diagnosed eating disorder completed psychometric tests prior
to receiving treatment. The data were analysed using
structural equation modeling. Fit indices indicated that the
hypothesized model fit adequately to the data. Although
cross-sectional in nature, the data suggested that
attachment insecurity may lead to negative affect. As well,
attachment insecurity may lead to body dissatisfaction,
which in turn may lead to restrained eating among women with
eating disorders. Attachment insecurity could be a possible
vulnerability factor for the development of eating disorder
symptoms among women. Eat Behav. 2006 Aug;7(3):252-7. Epub

announce their new location in Cooper City, Florida (West of
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida). Milestones
offers a program of recovery for those suffering with anorexia,
bulimia, compulsive overeating, and related disorders as well
as the issues often accompanying an eating disorder.
Participants are afforded the opportunity of preparing their
own meals, supervised grocery shopping, attending local support

“upscale” townhouse-style homes situated within a gated
community featuring several amenities (pool and recreation
area, fully equipped gym, walking and jogging trails, etc.).
The program has been designed to meet the needs of individuals

Research Study - Massachusetts General Hospital Study of
Therapy for Bone Loss in Anorexia Nervosa: The
Neuroendocrine Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital is
conducting research studies on anorexia-induced bone loss.
Their screening study is for men and women age 12-50 with

body. The study involves one visit of approximately 3

seen in women with anorexia nervosa. They hope that the
combination of these two investigational medications will
help rebuild depleted bone and prevent further bone
breakdown in women with anorexia nervosa. The study consists

Shame and Anger: The
Criticism Connection by Brock Hansen, LCSW. This new
book explores the evolutionary psychology of the primary
affects of shame and anger, their connection to one another,
and their significance for dealing with criticism and
self-criticism. The chapter on toxic shame is especially
relevant for eating disorders, and the chapters on quieting
shame and anger to deal with criticism situations are also
applicable. Written for the use of general readers and
clients, the book offers clear and detailed descriptions of
techniques for quieting these powerful and potentially
disruptive emotional reactions and reframing criticism as
useful feedback. The book also discusses approaches for
effectively delivering criticism without shaming that can be
used by parents, supervisors in the workplace, friends,
family, and anyone who wishes to give effective input to
others while maintaining positive and caring relationships.
Brock Hansen, LCSW is a clinical social worker and personal
effectiveness coach in private practice in Washington, DC.
He has over thirty-five years experience counseling clients
with eating disorders and other shame based disorders.
Educated at Johns Hopkins University and the Smith College
School for Social Work, he is trained in hypnosis and

Lipton. The story of a teen led astray by the allure of
thinness, beauty, and its potential power to change her
life, Unwell is a powerful psychological journey into the
world of eating disorders. Lipton ultimately reveals the
societal illness at the heart of anorexia nervosa; not
simply our obsession with appearance, but the loneliness and
pain adolescents accurately perceive as one of the burdens of
maturity. For more information or to order go to

Tips:
EDReferral.com Membership Dues Increase: Our rates still
remain significantly lower than all our major competitors. So
far we have only increased our dues for our new
members and those who fail to keep their membership dues
current. If you want to renew now and lock in your
membership dues at the current rate, email us and we will
direct you to a special page for our charter members which
will allow you to renew at the old rates for either one
year or 2 years (with an additional discount).
Increase Referrals with a Second Office Listing on
EDReferral.com:
If you have 2 offices, you can list the second
office for only $55 for the entire year--that works out to less
than $3 a month. Many
therapists have commented that this has worked out well for
them in terms of increased referrals.
Also make sure that your listing is up-to-date and
covers all areas of the eating disorder field where you provide
treatment. This
will help when people are searching for you on our site. For
more information visit

or email
edreferral@aol.com.
Banner
Advertising—thanks to all who have supported us with a banner
on our site.
We only allowed 2 banners on every page except the home
page and in just a few short months, they are almost all
taken (we do have a new
popular page with some openings).
Thank you to everyone for their support. For more
information on any advertising space still available email
edreferral@aol.com.
Newsletter
Protocol: Our newsletter goes out to thousands of professionals and laymen
via email (over 10,000 individuals). EDReferral.com receives
numerous requests by professionals to have information included
in the newsletter. Unfortunately, we have limited space to
include information, thus here is the current protocol:
1. All information must be submitted to
edreferral@aol.com
no later than the 20th of each month. Inclusion in the
newsletter will be based on a first come - first serve basis.
2. Information is subject to review and editing for
space considerations.
3. If you are a member, send us information on
conferences, workshops, support groups and projects and we will
list this information on the website for FREE as we have always
done. We want to support your work. If you are a member and you
would like your event to also be announced in the newsletter
the charge is $80.00.
