May 19 (Saturday) CONTRA DANCE... Contra Dance at the Iris Festival The Historic Jonesborough Dance Society and the Andrew Johnson Bank of Greeneville will bring contra dance to Greeneville, Tennessee as a part of the annual Iris Festival. The dance will be held at the Trinity United Methodist Church at 524 Tusculum Boulevard. Starting at 6:00pm, teacher/caller, Diane Silver, from Asheville will conduct a class for beginners. The class will cover the basic skills, calls and formations that make up a contra dance. No partner is necessary. All dances are taught with a walk thorough before the music starts. The caller also leads the dance while they are done to music. It’s easier to catch on to the dance if you try to find someone in the group who has some experience at contra dancing. The dance will run from 6:30-9:30pm with a waltz break at 8:00pm. Admission to the dance is $7, $5 for HJDS members and $4 for Students.  July 13-15 (Friday-Sunday) SWING ...Sugar Foot Stomp! in Asheville. A weekend dedicated to old-fashioned swing. We will crank up those classic early-jazz tunes and get down and dirty with classes in Peabody, 20's Charleston, Solo Jazz, and more. Extensive class sessions on these and other rare early swing styles is the inspiration for Sugar Foot Stomp! Our featured instructors, Chad & Midori from New York, are outstanding dancers, choreographers, and dance researchers, and in 2004 took first place in the Fast Dance Division of the American Lindy Hop Championships with a Peabody and 20's Charleston performance. Filling out this weekend's hot schedule of classes with some Lindy Charleston and Jazz movement sessions are Michael & Jaya from Asheville, NC, who, in addition to organizing Lindy Focus (1-5) and Southern Belle Swing Bash (1-2), have taught workshops throughout the region including Orlando, Atlanta, Knoxville, Nashville, Memphis, Charleston, Greenville, Asheville, Raleigh, Greensboro, Charlotte, Blacksburg, and Pittsburgh.
