Current Research on Eating Disorders:
Cross-ethnic differences in eating disorder symptoms and
related distress.
Franko DL, Becker AE, Thomas JJ, Herzog DB. Department of
Psychiatry, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated ethnic differences in the
frequency of eating disorder symptoms and related distress
in a U.S. college-based eating disorders screening program.
METHOD: Responses to self-report questions and counselors'
assessment were analyzed in an ethnically diverse sample (n
= 5,435). RESULTS: The frequency of binge-eating,
restrictive eating, vomiting, and amenorrhea did not differ
significantly across ethnic groups. However, significant
between-group differences were found with respect to modes
of purging. Binge correlates (e.g., eating until
uncomfortably full) were significantly more frequent among
Caucasian than African American participants (p < .001).
Binge eating was the best predictor of distress among
Caucasians, African Americans, and Latinos, whereas vomiting
was the best predictor of distress among Asians. Asian
participants who used laxatives were significantly less
likely to receive a recommendation for further evaluation
than non-Asian participants. CONCLUSION: Ethnic diversity in
symptom prevalence and related distress was identified.
Clinician recognition of this potential diversity may
enhance culturally competent care for eating disorders.

certification training sessions in Bariatric Surgery
Aftercare My Self Design seeks clinicians who are:
1. interested in providing quality individual aftercare to
bariatric surgery patients, 2. experienced at treating
eating and weight disorders, 3. licensed and indemnified in
the states where they practice, My Self Design is a unique,
individual counseling program for Lap Band, Gastric Bypass
and DS surgery patients involving 18 counseling sessions
over the first two years after surgery. It is rooted in a
cognitive behavioral model of therapy and was developed to
help bariatric surgery patients plan and implement the
behavioral changes required for long term success.
Emerging research suggests that many current bariatric
patients will, unfortunately, regain a significant portion
of their surgical weight loss. My Self Design believes this
trend can be reversed. Seven year outcome data shows that
patients who complete the program and maintain annual follow
up can expect to enjoy long term maintenance of 80% or more
of their original surgical weight loss. Quality aftercare is
the key! 2007 certification training sessions are scheduled
for July 20-21 & August 3-4 in Ambler, PA. Certified
providers receive all copyrighted program materials
including treatment manual, client exercises, two My Self
Design DVDs: Weight Loss Surgery: An Inside Look and
Boomerang: Challenging Regain After Weight Loss Surgery,
marketing materials, 2 days of program training in Ambler ,
4 hours of post training phone consultation, and a webpage

22.5 CEUs. The event is taking place at the Philadelphia

do so when it is not yet clear how best to formulate and
measure what getting better actually means. The Keynote

Research Studies on Eating Disorders:
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)
is set to conduct a new long-term study of anorexia nervosa
in 240 teens, ages 12 to 18.
Researchers plan to start
recruiting subjects on May 1 and will follow subjects for a
four-year period.
Six research facilities in the United States and Canada will
work together with the NIMH on the new study, which will
focus on early-intervention treatments. Experts believe that a combination of factors leads to
anorexia. American society's worship of ultra-thinness
places immense pressure on women - and on men, to a greater
extent now than ever before. Research has found that a woman
with an anorexic mother or sister is more likely to become
anorexic herself. Also, parents who are highly focused on
appearance, frequently go on diets, or make negative
comments about their children's bodies are more likely to
have a child who develops anorexia.
Other factors which may lead to anorexia include trauma, a perfectionistic
personality, and a genetic predisposition to the disorder.
Getting help early on is crucial to effective treatment as
anorexia has the highest death rate of any mental health
disorder. Source:

Massachusetts Research Study - Massachusetts General
Hospital Study of Therapy for Bone Loss in Anorexia Nervosa:
The Neuroendocrine Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital is
conducting research studies on anorexia-induced bone loss.
Their screening study is for men and women age 12-50 with
anorexia nervosa. They are investigating causes of
osteopenia (or bone loss) in the spine, hip, wrist and total
body. The study involves one visit of approximately 3
hours. Their treatment study is for women aged 18-45 with
anorexia nervosa and absent or irregular menstrual periods.
They are investigating the combined use of a natural hormone
and a medication that is effective for bone loss in
postmenopausal women as a novel treatment for the bone loss
seen in women with anorexia nervosa. They hope that the
combination of these two investigational medications will
help rebuild depleted bone and prevent further bone
breakdown in women with anorexia nervosa. The study consists
of 6 visits over 12 months. A stipend of up to $675 is
awarded throughout the course of the study. If interested,
