Current Research on Eating Disorders:

Switching to the bingeing/purging subtype of anorexia nervosa is frequently associated with suicidal attempts. Researchers: Foulon C, Guelfi JD, Kipman A, Ads J, Romo L, Houdeyer K, Marquez S, Mouren MC, Rouillon F, Gorwood P. CMME-Sainte Anne, Psychiatric Department of the University Hospitals, 100 rue la Sant, 75674 Paris Cedex 14, France. OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa has the highest suicide mortality ratio of psychiatric disorders, suicide being associated with many factors. We assessed the first lifetime occurrence of these factors taking into account their possible overlap. METHOD: Three hundred and four in- and out-patients with anorexia nervosa (DSM-IV) were systematically recruited in three hospitals of Paris suburbs, between December 1999 and January 2003. Patients were assessed by a face-to-face interview (DIGS). Current eating disorder dimensions were measured, and patients interviewed by a trained clinician to assess minimal BMI and, retrospectively, the age at which anorexia nervosa, major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders and switch to bingeing/purging type occurred for the first time, if applicable. RESULTS: Major depressive disorder (p<0.001) and subtype switch from the restrictive to the bingeing/purging type (p<0.001) were the two factors significantly more frequently occurring before suicidal attempts, and remained involved when a multivariate analysis is performed, whether syndromic or dimensional measures are being used. Taking into account lifetime occurrence with a survival analysis, the switch to bingeing/purging type of anorexia appears as a major predictive factor, with a large increase of the frequency of suicidal attempts (OR=15) when compared to patients with neither major depressive disorder nor bingeing/purging type. CONCLUSIONS: Bingeing/purging type of anorexia nervosa is largely associated with suicidal attempts, and may deserve specific attention. If confirmed on a prospectively designed study, these results would argue for early detection and/or more intensive and specific therapeutic intervention on this aspect of bingeing and purging behaviors.

Philadelphia, PA: The 17th Annual Renfrew Center Foundation Conference For Professionals, Feminist Perspectives and Beyond: Exploring Eating Disorders Recovery. The Keynote Speakers for this conference are Arianna Huffington, Anne E. Becker, MD, PhD, ScM, Kelly Klump, PhD, Michael Levine, PhD and Scott Crow, MD. Advocacy:

Advocacy - The Eating Disorders Coalition for Research, Policy and Action. Mental Health Parity is on the move. You can help! Mental health parity is on the move in Congress. There is a good chance that a mental health parity bill will soon pass. The Eating Disorders Coalition is working to ensure that Congress passes the strongest possible mental health parity bill. There are two versions in Congress now, one in the Senate and one in the House. The Senate bill is good, but it can be stronger. The House bill is excellent and we strongly support its immediate passage without amendment. The EDC supports BOTH the House and Senate bills. Members of Congress NEED to hear from YOU, their constituents. 1. Contact your U.S. Representative and ask for "support for the immediate passage of the Paul Wellstone Mental Health and Addiction Equity Act of 2007, H.R. 1424, without amendments." 2. Contact both of your U.S. Senators and ask for "support of the Mental Health Parity Act of 2007, S. 558." Take Action Now! www.Congress.org, contact your national, state, or local elected officials. The EDC, a Washington, D.C. advocacy organization, for more information visit http://www.eatingdisorderscoalition.org.

Therapist Spotlight (each month EDReferral.com spotlights different programs and professionals)

New York Therapist -- Dr. Joan Lavender: Do you know about Experiential Focusing for Eating and related Issues? Kyra was grappling with a serious eating and body image problem that occupied her thoughts, sapped her energy and withered her social life. She read about it, discussed it at length with friends and made rules to limit the time she spent suffering from it. But the problem wouldnt budge. Sitting in a psychotherapy session, with the safety of her therapist, Kyra carefully consulted her insides the way she actually held the problem inside her. As she became more able to do this- using her intrinsic bodily-knowing of the problem the issue began to unfold. It shifted shape on its own, as if the problem itself wanted to change. As this happened, Kyra felt herself moving beyond her usual stuck place. Her thinking cleared and she knew, in a deeper way than ever before, what she needed to do with her life. And, as she and her therapist worked together, she knew how to get there.* If you are a talented young woman with great potential or an older woman braving significant life changes on your own, please dont spend any more time blaming yourself. There is no time to lose! Eating disorders, depression, anxiety, isolation and stress can create stuck places in every aspect of your life family, work, intimacy, creativity and even spirituality. But good therapy is worth the investment; it is a low-profile life-altering experience. Joan Lavender, Psy.D. is a former Director of The Renfrew Centers specializing in eating disorders, competition, achievement and other challenges of contemporary city life. She loves helping women of all ages create balanced satisfying lives. Joans approach includes Experiential Focusing*, a method correlated with positive life change, increased self-esteem and a sense of wholeness and integration. Dr. Lavender now has openings for new clients in her New York office. Call 212-866-0461. Research Studies on Eating Disorders:

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is set to conduct a new long-term study of anorexia nervosa in 240 teens, ages 12 to 18. Researchers plan to start recruiting subjects on May 1 and will follow subjects for a four-year period. Six research facilities in the United States and Canada will work together with the NIMH on the new study, which will focus on early-intervention treatments. Experts believe that a combination of factors leads to anorexia. American society's worship of ultra-thinness places immense pressure on women - and on men, to a greater extent now than ever before. Research has found that a woman with an anorexic mother or sister is more likely to become anorexic herself. Also, parents who are highly focused on appearance, frequently go on diets, or make negative comments about their children's bodies are more likely to have a child who develops anorexia. Other factors which may lead to anorexia include trauma, a perfectionistic personality, and a genetic predisposition to the disorder. Getting help early on is crucial to effective treatment as anorexia has the highest death rate of any mental health disorder. This study involves the completion of interviews, questionnaires, a taste test and an fMRI scan. The total time commitment for this study is approximately 6-8 hours, which will be spread out over the course of several weeks. The compensation for completion of this study and all related materials will be $150. For more information, contact UCSD Eating Disorder Treatment and Research Program at 858-366-2525 or email edresearch@ucsd.edu.

San Diego, CA - UCSD Researchers Seek Men and Women Suffering From Anorexia Nervosa: This study is being done at UCSD to determine whether the medication Quetiapine helps people suffering from anorexia nervosa by reducing core eating disorder symptoms, as well as symptoms of anxiety, depression and obsessionality, in addition to increasing BMI. Men and women between the ages of 18-65 and currently suffering from anorexia nervosa are needed. This study involves the completion of interviews, questionnaires, lab work and medication management. The total time commitment for this study is approximately 18 hours, which will be spread out over the course of 8-10 weeks. The compensation for completion of this study and all related materials will be $360. For more information, contact UCSD Eating Disorder Treatment and Research Program at 858-366-2525 or email edresearch@ucsd.edu.

San Francisco, CA: Relationship between spirituality and recovery from bulimia nervosa: A doctoral student in clinical psychology from Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center in San Francisco is working on a qualitative case study dissertation involving the relationship between spirituality and recovery from bulimia nervosa, is seeking participants who have a minimum of one year of recovery from eating disorder behavior. Participants should be willing to 1) discuss how they have managed to incorporate spirituality in their recovery and 2) describe the benefits or hindrances of having used spirituality to help them recover from their eating disorders. Both adult women and men (18 +) are encouraged to apply for the study, as well as persons of various ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Persons from the Southern California area, in particular, are encouraged to apply. Interested persons should contact the researcher, Zaccario Tramontana, MA, at owlspirit993@yahoo.com.

Massachusetts Research Study - Massachusetts General Hospital Study of Therapy for Bone Loss in Anorexia Nervosa: The Neuroendocrine Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital is conducting research studies on anorexia-induced bone loss. Their screening study is for men and women age 12-50 with anorexia nervosa. They are investigating causes of osteopenia (or bone loss) in the spine, hip, wrist and total body. The study involves one visit of approximately 3 hours.  Their treatment study is for women aged 18-45 with anorexia nervosa and absent or irregular menstrual periods.
