California Evacuees Unwind With Yoga, Kosher Food from Reuters / via Environmental News Network (enn.com)
As emergency shelters go, the Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego might get a five-star rating, with yoga and acupuncture for stressed-out adults, clowns and candy for bored kids and even Kosher meals. The stadium, best known as home to the National Football League's San Diego Chargers, was converted this week into an emergency evacuation center accommodating 10,000 people forced from their homes by wildfires scorching the county. City and state officials and legions of volunteers running the center did their best to provide not only for evacuees' basic needs but also lifestyle perks designed to make the Golden State's displaced denizens feel more at home. Food and water were in ample supply, with tables lining the stadium's main concourse laden with cold cuts, breads, condiments, cookies, fruit and coffee. Dinner included roast beef, fresh vegetables, salad and rice. Jewish evacuees were able to abide by their dietary restrictions by following a sign advertising Kosher food.

In November of 1978, Pegi gave birth to Ben Young, her first child with Neil Young. In early 1979, Ben was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. It was Neil’s second child with the condition, the first being Zeke, who Neil had in a previous relationship with the now late Carrie Snodgress. (Pegi and Neil have since had a second child, Amber, who does not have any form of the condition). Seeing the potential in children who live with cerebral palsy, Pegi helped co-found the Bridge School in 1986. The Bridge School helps children explore their hidden talents and lead an independent life, giving them a chance to communicate through the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). In 1994, she made her live music debut on a darkly-lit stage at the Academy Awards, singing back-up while Neil played a solo piano performance of “Philadelphia”. In 2000, she joined Neil on tour, singing back-up on songs like "Harvest Moon" and "Cowgirl in the Sand". And in June of 2007, she released "Pegi Young", a collection of 11 songs.

France Kicks Off 'Green Revolution' Summit

Green campaigners and big business on Wednesday (Oct. 24, 2007) opened a marathon two-day round-table with the French government aimed at kickstarting an environmental revolution in Europe's third-biggest economy. President Nicolas Sarkozy closes the summit Thursday with a speech outlining a master plan to slash France's environmental impact, in the presence of the Nobel Peace Prize winning climate crusaders Al Gore and Wangari Maathai. Thousands of French people - as well as the Eiffel Tower - joined in a five-minute "lights-out" for the planet late Tuesday in a show of support for the event, which concludes weeks of talks between government, business, farmers and campaigners. "This may be the start of a whole new kind of governance," Prime Minister Francois Fillon told reporters before the opening session on climate change - the first of nine themes to be tackled over the next two days.
