Yule is the holyday on the Wheel of the Year that blurs the differences between Pagans and Christians. Pagans celebrate the rebirth of the sun; Christians celebrate the birth of the son. Members of both faiths decorate evergreen trees, symbolizing eternal life and connecting heaven and earth (star on top, rooted in the earth). The Pagan holyday occurs on the Winter Solstice, an astronomical event; the birth of Christ was foretold by astrologers who observed astronomical phenomena. Our ancestors sat vigil in burrows, awaiting the miracle of returning light; the holy family sat vigil in a manger, awaiting the miracle of life. And at least one holiday song, "Deck the Halls", can be sung extant by both groups. Even Santa Claus has a foot in both worlds. Some scholars believe that Santa’s origin is as the tribal shaman who climbed the World Tree through the smoke hole in the council chamber in search of the gift of food for the tribe during hungry winter months.

Uganda's President Revives Plan to Axe Rainforest from Reuters (via Environmental News Network / enn.com)
Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni on Friday (Dec 21, 2007) revived a controversial plan to hand over a swathe of rainforest to a local company to be destroyed and replaced with a sugarcane plantation. In an address to his party published in newspapers, Museveni called those who oppose his plan to give 7,100 hectares or about a quarter of Mabira Forest reserve to the private Mehta group's sugar estate "criminals and charlatans." Uganda's government scrapped the original plan in October after a public outcry and violent street protests in which three people died, including an ethnic Indian man who was stoned to death by rioters. Mehta is owned by an ethnic Indian Ugandan family.
