Let's Go to the Beach without " Going to the Beach"!
Where else but in our area can we all go to the beach without going to the beach?

Where else can we be at the beach one moment and then climb a mountain and play in a stream the next moment?

June is a time to go to the beach, play in a stream, play YOUR songs loud and simply rejoice in being alive in our beautiful mountain home!
The beaches are open, the boats have returned to the lake, new trails are now open for you to explore, new businesses are waiting just for you and our area has come alive once again!
Lets all RESOLVE TO BE KIDS AGAIN THIS MONTH!
TAG YOUR IT!!

namaste,
Russ Meade
"What a beautiful, sunny morning. It makes you happy to be alive, doesn't it? We can't let the sun outshine us! We have to beam, too! "-Takayuki Ikkaku,
"Summer is the time when one sheds one's tensions with one's clothes, and the right kind of day is jeweled balm for the battered spirit. A few of those days and you can become drunk with the belief that all's right with the world." ~Ada Louise Huxtable
" I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. " Henry David Thoreau

Local Heroes Need to be Remembered!"Do you remember me?"
One of the main purposes of our Community Newsletter and Web Site is to preserve the great history of our area.
We have gleaned from old family Bibles and from speaking to the older generations in our area the history that appears on our History Web Pages.
From old newspaper articles at Dalton's General Store, we found this " Local Hero" from another war.

Do see what he did for Us by going to our History Page, 1973
Now, it is time to remember and honor the heroes of this present war.
So many have died from NC that when the Army's famed 82nd Airborne Division dedicated its own memorial to paratroopers killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, three sides of the wide granite column were blank. There is no more room. See: Asheville Citizen Times Article
If you know of a local who has served or is serving in Iraq, please let us know!
Do take a moment today and simply click the image below:

Do You Remember Me?
Let's honor those who are serving us everyday!
It is a " must view for all"!

The Ugly Signs of Our Area Reproduce Again!

In the past month, we have heard from so many of you asking how we can stop the invasion of the ugly signs that have invaded our beautiful community.
One resident has informed us that since last month the uglies have increased to over 150!
The same length of road in Hendersonville had only 2!
If you have not driven the road from the library recently you will be amazed as many of us are by the sheer number and size of these eye polluters! These signs are not mere directional signs to local businesses but signs for businesses miles away from our community. We have the most beautiful mountain vistas and daily we see signs such as above.
If you would like to take the lead in organizing a boycott of these sign polluters or have suggestions do let us know and we will publish it for all to join!

In Last Issue of the Hickory Nut Gorge Newsletter,we listed 20/20's recent piece on " The Happiest Places in the World".
In this book, Eric Weiner, author of "The Geography of Bliss," states that the Asheville general area where we live is one of the happiest places in the US! One of his major conclusions is that our area is happy ( and Washington DC is not) because of the close sense of community.
- Let's continue this sense of community by joining one of our groups, helping our neighbor, and simply sharing our mutual journey.
- If you have a thought or an event be sure to send it to us.
- If you have an article that you wrote about our area or a poem in you, be sure to let us know and we will feature it in our Articles on Our Area Page. that we will be developing for next month.
- If you have positive news that we all would like to know about do let us know.
Our Newsletter is a true COMMUNITY EFFORT
- It has now grown to the largest known data base in all of Western NC due to the efforts of so many!.
- Thanks to so many for the notes, pictures, books, and slips of paper given to develop our history for all to simply "remember" those who have lived here before.
- Thanks to Jimi Moore from Info Rutherfordton for developing and sending our Comprehensive Calendar each month.
- Thanks to the many talented Pat Pepple for her Discussion Group for our area
- Thanks to the many chamber members, advertisers, and individuals who have shared their data bases of e-mails.
- Thanks to the members of the Conservation Community for sending in updates on their work in the Gorge.
- Thanks to all who remind us of our history.
