CANNES: Woody goes Spanish for ‘Barcelona' soundtrack

Reposted: "the Cliff Edge", May 18th, 2008 Posted in Film, Music, Notes, Places

As usual, Woody Allen has scored his new movie, "Vicky Christina Barcelona" with synch tracks but instead of the American standards that accompany his Manhattan movies, this time he's gone Spanish and it worked out just fine. The title track, "Barcelona," is by Giulia y Los Tellarini, Maik Alemany, Alejandro Mazzoni and Jens Neumaier and performed by Tellarini with Pablo Diaz-Reixas, Xavier Tort and Jordi Llobet. Allen says in the film's production notes that the song came along out of the blue.

"People send me music all the time but I rarely get a chance to listen to anything. One morning, as I was running out to go to the set, I grabbed it without even opening it and listened to it in the car on the way to the location. And I said, ‘Hey, this is great! This is exactly what I want for the movie.' And it worked out well for everyone. They were grateful we were using their music and my producer was happy that we weren't using something that would cost a lot of money like a George Gerswin song!" - Woody Allen

Tellarini performs another of his group's songs, "La rey Del Retiro," in the picture, which also features a couple of tracks by the Biel Ballester Trio with Leo Hipaucha & Graci Pedro, "When I Was a Boy" and "Your Shining Eyes." Other music includes "Gorrion" and "Entre Las Olas," written and played by Juan Serrano (Professor Emeritus, California State University, Fresno, and Vida Flamenca Newletter subscriber); "Asturias," written by Isaac Albeniz and played by Juan Quesada; "Entre Dos Aguas," performed by Paco de Lucia and written by the artist and Jose Torregrosa; "El Noi de la Mare," a traditional Catalonian folk song arranged for classical guitar by Miguel Llobet and Andres Segovia and performed by Muriel Anderson; "Big Brother," written by Stephane Wrembel and performed by his trio with special guest David Grisman; and almost inevitably "Granada," composed by Isaac Albeniz and performed by Emilio de Benito.

This Week... Galicia

Santiago de Compostela (also Saint James of Compostela) is the capital of the autonomous community of Galicia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the northwest region of Spain in the Province of A Coruña, it was the "European City of Culture" for the year 2000. The city's Cathedral is the destination today, as it has been throughout history, of the important 9th century medieval pilgrimage route, the Way of St. James (Galician: Camiño de Santiago, Spanish: Camino de Santiago).

History of the Way of St. James Pilgrimage

The legend that St James found his way to the Iberian peninsula, and had preached there is one of a number of early traditions concerning the missionary activities and final resting places of the apostles of Jesus. Although the 1884 Bull of Pope Leo XIII Omnipotens Deus accepted the authenticity of the relics at Compostela, the Vatican remains uncommitted as to whether the relics are those of Saint James the Great, while continuing to promote the more general benefits of pilgrimage to the site.

According to a tradition that cannot be traced before the 12th century, the relics were said to have been discovered in 814 by Theodomir, bishop of Iria Flavia in the far northwest of the principality of Asturias. Theodomir was guided to the spot by a star, the legend affirmed, drawing upon a familiar myth-element, hence "Compostela" was given an etymology as a corruption of Campus Stellae, "Plain of Stars."

Los veranos del Corral - Granada

13 Agosto: Juan Carmona Habichuela "nieto" (guitarra). Baile: Luis de Luis
14 Agosto: Edu Lozano. (baile)
15 Agosto: Fuensanta La Moneta. (baile, foto aqui)

Texto y fotos: Antonio Conde.

Barcelona. The children of the street rumba and polyglot flamenco celebrate the freedom and sensuality of music and the wealth of contagious rhythm. This is the catharsis of flamenco and the joy of sonic experimentation: nomadic, racially-mixed music crossing the streets of cities of the world like a ship full of lunatics, communicating, creating, and celebrating. Techarí is the chemistry that flows in its concerts, Techarí is an attitude you put forth into the world, Techarí is alive in the smallest of details. In Caló, the gypsy language, Techarí means "Free." Wherever in the world they find themselves, they follow their own road.

The journey of Ojos de Brujo (ODB) started well before they began to know one other. In the depths of their previous experiences. In their fascination with the rhythmical treasures of the planet and the languages of flamenco. With a constant experimental curiosity and the need to reach out to and encounter other artists.

In 1999, the group recorded its first album, 'Vengue' (another gypsy word for the energy that flows through life). It was a homemade production that captured the attention of critics and the public alike, and news of the band's performances spread rapidly. It was also the beginning of a period of independent production for ODB, after which they would begin to publish their own work. Going against conventional industry wisdom, they created their own structure and team for promotion, production, and recording of all future material.

The adventure that started in September of 2002 with the release of their second album, ''Barí' ("joy" or "virtual essence" in Caló) was the band's next step. Now, without industry pressure, they were free to take a new direction. They presented 'Barí' to enthusiastic fans across the globe between 2002 and 2005, through several tours in Latin America and the U.S., playing in the most important jazz, rock, and world music festivals such as Glastonbury, Rosklide, Summerstage NY Central Park, Lowlands, Montreal Jazz... Japan, Colombia, Morocco, Cuba, Mexico, Hungary, France, and Germany.

It is during this time that an encounter with the Senegalese group Daara J came about, along with Martirio's infinite celebration till the dawn and the beatbox antics of Maxwell Wright steering tanguillo rhythms; the vitality of Cuban pianist Roberto Carcasses and the magical world of Nitin Sawney, whose recent release featured guest Brujos; the majestic guitar work of Pepe Habicheula, the contagious energy of the Asian Dub Foundation; the lucidity of Raúl Rodrígues. Tambores beating out bulerías and so funky, so much funkier than Catalan rumba!

The vital enthusiasm of ODB has always gone well beyond music. A hive of artistic activity in which phographers, graffiti artists, visual entertainers, illustrators, programmers and producers collaborate and participate. Artists from all over the world play in and deepen the group's ideas, collected in the extra disc that the group is including in its new release, "Techarí."

A lovingly and luminously designed album, Techarí is alive with the colors, flavors, and textures that arise while exploring the group's visual world. They decided to publish it in both a standard edition as well as a deluxe booklet featuring artists' interpretations of each song.

Currently, they are getting ready to embark on the Techarí World Tour and are already gathering material for their next album. It is a voyage that has only just begun, set to continue into parts unknown...

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER:
Gilles Larrain went on a two-week trip to Andalusia in 1983 to photograph flamenco for GEO magazine. He ended up staying for two months in the attic of La Carboneria a flamenco venue in Sevilla as guest to the owner, Paco Lira, a kind of godfather to the flamenco world. The photos of "Flamenco: Landscapes of its Soul" are the result of Gilles' endless nights at the Carboneria and his trips with Paco to the homes of some of flamenco's legendary families. Others were taken at Gilles' SOHO studio where he continues to photograph flamenco artists that come to New York. Gilles' one-of-a-kind gelatin silver prints document major contemporary flamenco artists off stage in intimate settings. His photos capture the privileged studio moment and explore the visual aesthetics of flamenco that reflect the austere beauty of the Andalusian landscape.

Over the years Gilles has photographed many legends from our flamenco community. In the coming months we will be presenting an ongoing series of photographs from Mr. Larrain's "Flamenco" series. I am honored to be able to present extraordinary work from this highly regarded series.

Charming 19th Century Attic Apartment in Madrid

I rent out for short term visits. On Calle Mayor, views of Almudena cathedral, around the corner from the Royal Palace, 10-minute walk to Amor de Dios flamenco studio.  Austrias district of the Centro (downtown), half block from medieval Plaza de la Villa, 10 minute walk to best tapas scene on Cava Baja, 2 blocks to Plaza Mayor, 7 minutes to Puerta del Sol, 20 minute walk to Prado, 10 minutes to Plaza Santa Ana for tapas, bars, lots of action. No need to get in a taxi or metro ever, except to the airport. In front and behind apartment are all little cobblestone streets to get lost on - with lots of good little restaurants and taverns around every bend. 1 BR, queen-size bed, sofa bed, down comforter and pillows, full kitchen, washer-dryer, elevator (but I like the back steps for exercise, and incredible views of every important monument and church in Madrid - all illuminated at night)  Hardwood floors, slanted ceilings, skylights with gorgeous views.  Sunlight floods into the kitchen in the morning.  Very quiet with thick stone walls.  Open the skylight in the bedroom you hear birds singing in the morning, and church bells from all over Madrid. But go downstairs, onto the street, and there you are in the middle of everything.

I rent it to friends in the flamenco and arts community, who appreciate it as much as I do, for $100 per night – less for longer term.

CASTANET WORKSHOPS WITH ROBERTO AMARAL

Learn the exciting and beautiful art of playing castanets
6 fun and intensive summer workshops for beginning and intermediate students

Roberto Amaral is a master teacher and choreographer who has taught and trained many of today's generation of leading professional dancers. Maestro Amaral has developed his own castanet vocabulary unlike anyone else's. Many dancers and master teachers in Spain have referred to his castanet expertise as "amazing". Also, several of his students have gone on to do great things here in the U.S. and in Spain, receiving high praise for their precise technique and knowledge of this unique instrument.

Each 2 hour workshop will focus on learning Roberto's original exercises, patterns and combinations which are easily incorporated into various flamenco and classical dances requiring castanet accompaniment. Also, this can be a valuable learning experience for non-dancer musicians/percussionists who would like to learn how to play a fun instrument!

* Each workshop will be limited to a maximum of 10 students.
* A slightly different curriculum will be taught in each session
* The first 3 sessions will be focusing on beginning technique and theory, while the remainder of the 6 workshops will be taught at an intermediate level. Those beginner students who enroll in the first 3 workshops are welcome to also participate in the intermediate ones so as to further their knowledge and playing ability with exercises and patterns of a slightly more complexed nature. It would just be the next natural progressive learning step.
* Enrollees can take anywhere from 1 to all 6 workshops (at least 2 beginning workshops are recommended for a basic introductory understanding of castanet playing and application)
* Each student must provide his/her own castanets. Student and professional quality castanets can be purchased online from the website esflamenco.com Prices vary with the quality. The website is vey helpful with choosing the proper castanets for your needs. Roberto can also assist you with this if contacted at least 3 weeks before your scheduled workshop.
* Workshop tuition: $40.00 per 2-hour session
* Workshop dates and times: Sun. June 1st......2 - 4 pm ( Beg.)

Sun. June 22nd...2 - 4 pm ( Beg.)
Sun. July 13th.....2 - 4 pm ( Beg.)
Sun. July 27th....2 - 4 pm ( Int.)
Sun. Aug. 10th....2 - 4 pm ( Int.)
Sun. Aug. 24th....2 - 4 pm ( Int.)

* Pre-registration at least 5 days prior to each session is required.
* Special customized workshops and master classes at the Roberto Amaral Dance Studio can be arranged and set up on other days and in other time slots. For either a customized castanet or flamenco dance workshop you must have a group of at least 6 students to qualify for the $40.00 per person rate. Otherwise a slightly higher tuition will apply.
* Workshops can also be arranged in cities outside the L.A. area. An "out-of town" special fee and a consecutive 2-day minimum would apply. If you're interested in organizing a special workshop please use the contact info below.

Carola Zertuche and Theater Flamenco
Thursdays at Peña Pachamama
1630 Powell (at Union)
San Francisco, CA

(415) 646-0018 http://www.penapachamama.com

The magic (yes, magic) begins with the venue: Peña Pachamama, a Latin-American restaurant with small tables doused in low red-tinted lighting like a quaint Bolivian valentine. Order dinner and sangria early, because when the musicians step onto the tiny stage and the dancers take to the wood floor at 8:30, you'll be entranced for the next two hours. The weekly show, which has a $10 cover charge, is led by Carola Zertuche, an ever-intense and inspired dancer who toured Spain and Mexico before settling in San Francisco and taking up the artistic directing reins of Theater Flamenco, which bills itself as the city's second oldest dance company after the ballet. The dancers' feet beat out the improvised rhythmic accompaniment to the live music a hand's reach from the diners - the Andalusian way - creating an intimacy you can't replicate from a theater seat.

By the way, check out the Flight Night events once a month on Thursdays - they are fun. Fashion, Wine and live music, always enjoyable. Please view their site for details and to sign up for invitations - http://www.napavalleygrille.com/sandiego/about.php

Beata Söderberg Release

This month on World Village, Swedish cellist Beata Söderberg makes her debut with Bailata, an exciting collaboration between Söderberg and Argentine group Justango. Swedish-born Söderberg fell in love with Argentine tango during her studies at the Manhattan School of Music, when she discovered the world of New York's milongas. Bailata is her third album and her World Village debut. Her first album, Beatitudes (2004), earned her a nomination for the Carlos Gardel Prize, the Argentinian equivalent of the Grammy Awards, and will be re-issued on World Village soon, as well as BeSo (2005).

Riad Flamenco - Jerez de la Frontera

If the question is, "what is Flamenco really about?" I believe that the answer is in Jerez. Much is printed on the web and talked about in flamenco circles about the origins of Flamenco, and there is the endless debate as to the role that gypsies have had to play in this art form's evolution. It is not my intention to editorialise with my own comments, I simply believe that the key to understanding flamenco is to spend time in an atmosphere where flamenco is a living day to day reality...

The Video Club Vistas Flamencas

You are invited to view Flamenco documentaries videotaped in Andalucia, Spain.

Once or twice each year, I travel to Andalucia where I videotape a wide variety of flamenco activities, including festivals, contests, ferias, peña presentations and spontaneous sessions whenever possible. After returning to the states, I edit the material and distribute 90-minute DVD's to my club members every four weeks. When a subscriber has received the sixth documentary issue, I submit an invoice for $36.00 which reflects the $6.00 per DVD shipment. This covers all first class shipping and handling costs and there is no charge for the discs themselves. Payments may be made by check or by credit card by visiting my website, www.vistasflamencas.com. Additionally, there is no term obligation as subscribers may cancel at any time without penalty.

To date there are thirty-three (33) back issues available at a rate of $5.00 per disc. Don't hesitate to email or call whenever you have a question.

Club Founder, Bill Davidson, offers the following:
- Flamenco Festivals
- Pena Presentations
- Flamenco Workshops and Foundations
- Contest and Spontaneous Scenes
- 90-minute DVD's shipped montly to your residence
- No DVD charges, subscribers pay only shipping and handling
- No term requirements
- Members may cancel at any time without penalty
- S&H charges are due after receipt of six issues -- no additional fees
