Measles Cases Triple as Parents Avoid Measles Vaccine
Fearing Link to Autism
The increase in US measles cases is the big story in the mainstream media this week. Case reports have tripled from 42 last year to 131 in 2008. Apparently half or 65 cases involve unvaccinated children, many of whom were home schooled to avoid measles vaccination. The other 65 contracted measles even though vaccinated against the virus. The 65 unvaccinated cases suggest that parents have been avoiding the MMR (measles mumps rubella) vaccine over concerns that MMR could cause adverse events such as aseptic meningitis or autism. See Part Two of this article for a safer more user-friendly vaccination schedule.
