Tech Tips for your Computer

Greetings

Cooler weather is really here!  And that means holiday season is just around the corner (can't you already smell the turkey baking?)  Hopefully everyone will be able to spend a little time with close friends and family, rejoice in what we've been given and pass along good cheer to those we encounter.  In observance of Thanksgiving, Christopher's Computers will be closed from Wednesday, November 26 through the weekend, and will re-open for business Monday, December 1.

As we tend to spend more time indoors during the chilly weather, we may be prompted to spend more time at our home computers.  Its a great idea to take some time to determine how much space your hard drive has left to work with, and then delete unused files and/or programs.  This will allow your machine to run as smoothly as it is meant to.  This newsletter provides easy to follow tips on just how to do these things.

As always, we encourage you to call us if you have any questions.  We can be reached Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm at 828-670-9800.

Thanks and Happy Computing!

Determine your Hard Drive Space

On older PCs with small hard drives, unused programs take up space that could be used for other processing activities. Windows uses space on the hard drive for different types of operations such as caching and virtual memory. If available free space is less than five percent of the total disk space, the computer's performance will degrade and the computer may become unreliable.
Here are the steps to verify how much disk space is available on the hard drive.

1. Go to START (the icon at the bottom left of your screen)

2. Choose MY COMPUTER and click on it

3. Right-click on the hard drive icon , and click Properties .
4. View the percentage of Used Space and Free Space on the General Tab.
If the percentage of Free Space is near or less than 5%, then files and/or programs should be removed.

How to Remove Unused Programs from your Hard Drive

Another way to increase the amount of disk space available on a hard drive is to uninstall unused programs. The unwanted program might be an old word processing program or a game that has not been played in months. You simply decide what is important. If you have the original disks, you can always reinstall the program if necessary.
Here are the steps to remove unwanted programs and increase hard drive space:
  1. Click Start , and Control Panel .
  2. Open Add/Remove Programs .
  3. Click the Install/Uninstall tab. Select programs that are no longer used and will not be used.
  4. Highlight the program name, and then click the Add/Remove or Change/Remove button and OK
  5. When the program is removed a prompt may appear to restart Windows.  Restart Windows, then repeat the steps listed above to remove any other programs.
*Please note that you must restart Windows for the removal to be complete.*

Online streaming TV & Movies--- FREE

Hulu provides one of the largest free video selections from a collection of over 50 broadcasting networks.  It allows users to watch shows with limited commercial interruption by watching larger ads prior to the start of the selected program.

Hulu offers full episodes and segments from over 400 different TV shows, some no longer on the air, some in syndication, and many currently shown only in the United States.  Hulu also offers over 100 movies ranging from the Classics to Modern films.

The name Hulu comes from a Mandarin Chinese proverb (宝葫芦), in which it means holder of precious things.

Computer Owners' Mantra

Be conservative and humble in how you treat your system.

Install just what you need, not every last "cool" piece of software you find out on the internet.
If you're not sure how -don't do it- get professional help!

Don't trust your system to a friend, neighbor or relative that claims they "know something about computers!!"
There are far too many "computer" people out there that can "talk the talk" but can't "walk the walk".

Find and develop a relationship with a reputable local computer repair shop.

Would you get your car repaired by just anyone? Then don't treat your computer that way!
