Director's Notes
We at NCES hope that you all enjoyed a wonderful holiday season with family and friends, and for those of you who had to travel, I personally hope that your experiences were much more pleasant and timely than mine which gave me a new perspective to Murphy's Law!
Last August after scheduling a routine doctor's appointment in Massachusetts, I made reservations to fly from Boston's Logan Airport to Minnesota on the 19th. Good planning and my cooperative doctor allowed me to reach Logan at 1:30 PM in plenty of time for a 5:20 PM flight; which had already been cancelled due to conditions at MSP! Thus I spent a lovely evening at the Logan Hilton, along with many other disappointed travelers. While very pricey it was a better choice than driving north in whiteout conditions would have been; alas no flights were available on the 20th. After diving home Saturday, I checked all possible weather reports and decided that the 22nd would be my next attempt, this time out of MHT to DTW and on to RST. It was a beautiful drive south to MHT where I learned my flight had been cancelled due to weather at DTW! To end this odyssey, I finally arrived at my destination in Rochester one-half hour before Santa arrived; rather tired but pleased to be with my family for the holidays, especially to watch my five year old grandson get to frolic in the snow for the very first time.
I was very pleased to be able to inform Dr. Mary Ford of Granite State College and the North Country Special Education Directors that many special education teachers have expressed their interest to earn additional certifications in General Special Education (3), LD (9), EBD (10), and IDD (11).
If any other special education teachers or administrators are interested in this opportunity, please email me at charlie@ncedservices.org. If cohorts of ten to twelve, or more could be established, then classes could be scheduled at sites in Gorham, Conway and Littleton, probably by this spring at the very latest.

LabQuest Series Underway
A small group of North Country educators are participating in a three-evening series on using the LabQuest in the classroom. This hands-on professional development program focuses on science inquiry using these hand-held devices. Essentially a mini-computer, the LabQuest collects and graphs data from various probes and sensors. The series is supported by Title IID grant funding.

Teaching Geometry Inductively
Students will deepen their understanding of geometry and how to teach it inductively. The course will be driven by activities and experiences that use inductive reasoning to help students better understand geometry. Students will leave with ready to use activities for their classrooms and practice finding and writing such activities. The course will span most traditional geometric topics including basic principles found in the middle school through more challenging concepts found in upper level high school geometry courses.
Dates: Thursdays, January 8, 15, 22, 29 and February 5 & 12, 2009 from 4:00 to 8:00 at NCES, Gorham, NH

Formative Assessment and Diagnostic Probes Follow-Up
This session is for K-12 mathematics educators and is a follow-up to the Formative Assessment & Diagnostic Probes sessions done on November 10th and December 8th with Christine Downing. In this follow-up session, participants will utilize curriculum topic studies in a more in-depth approach to design their own diagnostic probes. In addition, a protocol will be presented which helps to streamline the analysis of student work based on completion of diagnostic probes. Finally, activities will be presented to engage participants in aligning probes to the GLEs and GSEs and how to utilize NECAP support materials to create probes. Throughout the session, additional formative assessment classroom techniques (FACTs) will be shared by the presenter. Participants are encouraged to bring the following resources to the session:
- Uncovering Student Thinking in Mathematics (text received through prior sessions or may be purchased from NCES).
- Current mathematics program (teacher edition only) being utilized in school
- Copies of NH GLEs/GSEs
If you did not attend a prior session, you are still welcome to attend this session.

Educating the 21st Century Learning

The Local Education Support Center Network (LESCN) will host a conference on "Educating the 21st Century Student: Web 2.0 Safe and Savvy " on Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at Church Landing at Mills Falls, Meredith, NH. Peter Reynolds of Fablevision is scheduled to deliver the keynote. Scott Spradling, formerly of WMUR, will moderate a panel discussion. A variety of breakout sessions will feature NH professionals with expertise on internet use and the students in our schools. Registration at www.lescn.org. Register by March 1 to avoid late fee.

Performance Pathways Users Group
These video conferenced sessions are to provide a context for users to ask questions of each other and to share experiences including tips, tricks and best practices regarding the development and support of Performance Pathways applications including TechPaths, Assessment Builder and Performance Tracker.

Youth Leadership Project Mini-Grants Bidders Conference
The North Country Health Consortium's Substance Abuse Program is seeking teams of 5-8 youth, led by one adult, to apply for one of 20 $1,000 youth grants to be used toward performing a prevention activity in the community!
A Bidder's Conference will be held on January 30th, 2009 after school, broadcasted by video confernece to several schools and locations.

Honoring Fellow Mathematics Educators
The Fernand J. Prevost Mathematics Teaching Award ~ This award is given to a beginning teacher in his/her first, second, or third year who exemplifies the characteristics Dr. Prevost brought to his teaching. Nominations for this award are due by January 15th.
The Richard C. Evans Distinguished Mathematics Educator Award ~ This intent of this award is to highlight creativity and innovation in the teaching of mathematics to all students. The recipient of this award will have 5 or more years experience and represent Dr. Evans' philosophy, passion, and knowledge of mathematics education.
