"Home is Where the Heart Sings" April 2009
Inner Harmony

Mother Earth

from  LuAnn Cibik

Wednesday, April 22, will be the 39th Earth Day celebrated!  But truly, each day on Earth is special, unique and amazing.  Statistics about disappearing forests, extinctions of species, and land turning to desolate desert are a part of the daily sad facts now. During Earths 4.9 billions years circling the sun, this is just another one of the huge cycles that has occurred. Ice ages, mass extinctions, extreme volcanoes, Mama Earth has cycled through it before. And she does just fine. In time she will circle back. But for us humans, the thoughts of real climate change, massive extinction is darned scary!

Doing your part to conserve and save nature can help slow down the cycles... and continue to make our Earth Mother happy!

Green and Healthy

Compact Florescent Bulbs
While you can argue about the quality of light they emit, you can't argue with their efficiency in terms of electrical usage. But, did you know that you cannot just throw the 'burned out' CFL in the trash? And did you know that if one breaks in your home, you need to take some steps to prevent mercury contamination?
I'm sharing this, because, I Just Didn't know...

What to do when CFL BREAKS!

Before cleanup: Vent the room
1. Open a window and leave the room for 15 minutes or more.
2. Shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning system, if you have one.

Cleanup steps for hard surfaces
3. Carefully scoop up glass fragments and powder using stiff paper or cardboard and place them in a glass jar with metal lid (such as a canning jar) or in a sealed plastic bag.
4. Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder.
5. Wipe the area clean with damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes and place them in the glass jar or plastic bag.
6. Do not use a vacuum or broom to clean up the broken bulb on hard surfaces.

Cleanup steps for carpeting or rug
3. Carefully pick up glass fragments and place them in a glass jar with metal lid (such as a canning jar) or in a sealed plastic bag.
4. Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder.
5. If vacuuming is needed after all visible materials are removed, vacuum the area where the bulb was broken.
6. Remove the vacuum bag (or empty and wipe the canister), and put the bag or vacuum debris in a sealed plastic bag.

Disposal of cleanup materials
7. Immediately place all cleanup materials outside the building in a trash container or outdoor protected area for the next normal trash.
8. Wash your hands after disposing of the jars or plastic bags containing cleanup materials.
9. Check with your local or state government about disposal requirements in your specific area. Some states prohibit such trash disposal and require that broken and unbroken lamps be taken to a recycling center.

Future cleaning of carpeting or rug
10. For at least the next few times you vacuum, shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning system and open a window prior to vacuuming.
11. Keep the central heating/air conditioning system shut off and the window open for at least 15 minutes after vacuuming is completed.

STEAM UPDATE!

Steam cleaning is a terrific way to really clean and disinfect your space WITHOUT the use of harsh chemicals. If you have been following the continuing saga of 'LuAnn the Steam Addict'... Here's the update on the Professional Steamer!

The new Professional use Therma Steam cleaner now calls Inner Strength/Inner Harmony home. Being a ‘steam addict’, I was pretty excited about this new addition to our collection, and I was not disappointed. But, I will share that unless you need to clean 5,000 square feet of fitness facility, locker rooms, treatment rooms, and lobby, you might not need the BIG GUNS.

The professional version works much like my Scunci floor steamer (which cost about 1/20th of the price). On floor steamers, you fill up the water reservoir, and then wait for it to get hot. The Scunci takes about 5 minutes. The Therma Steem takes a half  hour. Really. The Scunci will steam for about 15 or 20 minutes (depending on your stop and start times, I tend to steam something, then turn off the steam and wipe the loosened crud off) The Therma Steem, I'll have to admit, can run for a LONG TIME. More than an hour. Enough time for me to steam everything.

The Professional unit puts out 110 pounds of steam pressure. I'm sure that's useful. I'll have to find something REALLY cruddy to test our the power of pressured steam.

Since my other steamer does heat more quickly, I'm hanging on to all my steamers at the moment... and yes, next month I'll have to give an update on LuAnn, the Queen of Clutter!
