Lou, Marie, Allan, and Andrew look forward to seeing you at ACL, June 24-28. Come see the new books, participate in the Latin publishers’ session and break-out groups, and if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, join Andrew’s pre-conference workshop on learning Latin via Skype and virtual worlds. For those Latin teachers who are looking for something creative to do this summer or who are thinking of classroom projects for the fall, there is a new online resource for creating free eBooks that can be used for Latin. The Tar Heel Reader (http://tarheelreader.org/) is described on its website as “a collection of free, easy-to-read, and accessible books on a wide range of topics. Each book can be speech enabled and accessed using multiple interfaces (i.e. switches, alternative keyboards, touch screens, and dedicated AAC devices). The books may be downloaded as slide shows in PowerPoint, Impress, or Flash format.” There is an entire category of Tar Heel Reader books for Latin: http://tarheelreader.org/tag/latin/. The books are free to read online, download, and use. All are simple and contain pictures. All are age-appropriate for younger readers. Many act as pictionaries, while some tell stories and others review parts of speech. You can make your own Latin readers, too. To learn how, please visit the Tar Heel Libelli wiki for simple, thorough instructions: Have fun making your libelli! If you are particularly proud of your books, send your links to Andrew Reinhard, Director of eLearning for Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers, who will post them on the eClassics site at http://eclassics.ning.com. The site also hosts the Tar Heel Reader-dedicated group, Scriptores “TarHeel.” |

In support of Ronnie Ancona’s June 9 webinar, “Vergil’s Aeneid: Teaching the Beginning of the Poem”, here are three Vergil-related websites: The Vergilian Society was founded in 1937 with the following objectives: "In order . . . to celebrate the ties of culture between Italy and America, a Society has been formed in Italy and named after Vergil." The purpose of this Society is to promote the study of Vergil by means of lectures, conferences, publications, and reports of excavation that have a bearing upon Vergil's works. Membership is open to any person who is interested in the study of Vergil: http://www.vergil.clarku.edu/ Virgilius.org is home to all things Vergil on the Web. Get an Aeneid quote of the day, links to other Vergil sites and resources, plus dedicated links to AP Vergil notes and resources: http://virgilius.org/ Professor Kelli McBride of Seminole State College offers an all-Aeneid webpage including culture, mythology, study guides, ancient art, and more: http://www.kellimcbride.com/aeneid.htm |
