Soul Qualities of a Teacher
|
"To teach is to demonstrate. It is but a call to witness, to attest to what you believe. This is not done by words alone...In fact, the verbal content of your teaching is quite irrelevant. It is the teaching underlying what you say that teaches." Course in Miracles, Manual for Teachers
"It is worth remembering that there is only one yoga and can only be one yoga. True, aspirants are of different natures and resort to various doctrines and practices along the path. But one who completes the process of yoga understands its different paths and sees that the systematic practice of various disciplines leads to the same place. In the end, all yogas lead to the one great Yoga." Swami Kripalu from "Sayings of Swami Kripalu" by Richard and Danna Faulds

Teaching Adaptive Yoga for Multiple Sclerosis
|
A Workshop for Yoga Teachers and Health Care Professionals
June 26 - 27, 2009
There are many potential students who would love to do yoga. Mainstream yoga classes often present too many obstacles for students who have limitations, impairments and even disabilities. Adaptive yoga looks at accessibility, appropriate class levels and the use of props to create safety and a meaningful experience.
While the focus is on multiple sclerosis, this skills based workshop is applicable to other student populations who need an adaptive approach.
It's been my experience that teaching yoga to students who have physical impairments is incredibly rewarding and it continues to stretch the edges of what I think I can do, both personally and as a yoga teacher. Next week, I'll be volunteering at the annual MS Camp here in Connecticut. I'll be meeting new people and visiting with students that I see every year. Some are young adults who live in nursing homes because of their disease. Some come with their family members who often take vacation time from work and travel from other states to support their sibling or parent. I'll lead them through a chair yoga experience, we'll have some fun, many will fall asleep during relaxation (or before) and I will again feel blessed and privileged to be a part of their day.
Around the country, teachers who have taken this program are making a real difference for people who have MS and other physically limiting health conditions. You can too! Change someone's life - make yoga accessible. This work is not for every one, but if you discover that it's for you, it can change your life, too.
