The first annual Escape to the Heritage Trail to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, CT Chapter, will take place on Saturday, August 22, 2009. This fundraising event will be the summer’s most relaxing get-away in Connecticut.

Participants are invited to attend The Heritage Trail Vineyards, to enjoy a day of wine tasting, cheese pairing, light lunch and delightful sweets all prepared by the famous Chef Harry Schwartz, seen weekly on Fox 61 Morning News, the PBS Show “Chef Harry and Friends” and NBC’s “Today Show” as the chef expert.

The day will also include an art show with artists from the New England area, relaxing light music, raffle prizes and a silent auction with items ranging from tickets to sporting events to themed gift baskets and packages to tickets to the Mohegan Sun Winefest ’10; just too many items to list!

For those interested in being pampered, the event will offer complimentary facials, manicures and massages- this is included with your ticket cost. We are aiming for an all inclusive afternoon of fun and relaxation…

We hope you join us on this exciting day and take advantage of all this event has to offer! Our goal is to create a world free of MS, while taking advantage of all the great aspects of Connecticut.

Proceeds from this event will help fund vital programs and services provided by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, CT Chapter to the more than 6,000 state residents affected by MS.

Yoga Nidra Workshop
All Levels Workshop Welcoming Beginners and Experienced Students
Yoga Nidra is the state of conscious deep sleep. In Yoga Nidra, you’re awake and the body is in a very relaxed state. Yoga Nidra brings calmness, quietness and clarity. It’s one of the deepest of all meditations, leading awareness through many levels of mental process to a state of deep stillness and insight.

This workshop explores various methods of practice that lead to the state of Yoga Nidra through which we can transform stress and experience the fullness of living an authentic life.

Intention, also called sankalpa or affirmation, can be an integral part of the Yoga Nidra process. During Yoga Nidra, the mind is in a state of receptivity that is particularly suited to affirmation. The more relaxed you are, the more effective the affirmation will be, since it will reach all levels of your consciousness.

During Part 1 of the workshop, you’ll be guided on a journey of discovery - to discover and put words to your deepest heart felt longing and - to discover your sacred symbol. You’ll learn about the structure and components of Yoga Nidra. You’ll be guided through a complete Yoga Nidra where you can use your sankalpa and sacred symbol for personal transformation, health and healing.

Part 2 will include another complete Yoga Nidra practice to strengthen your experience. Try it. You’ll love how you feel!

Healing Yoga for Every Body: Retreat for People who have Multiple Sclerosis
October 16 - 19, 2009
Yoga offers a unique and powerful healing path for people who have MS. Students with little mobility can benefit as much as students with little impairment. Yoga is not all about the body. It's about all the body, mind and spirit. It's about the breath. Yoga teaches awareness, to be present and use the mind in positive ways. The healing path of Yoga enhances health and well-being of body, mind and spirit. The philosophy of Yoga offers a way of living peacefully with what is and a deeper knowing that disease does not define the person. The practice of Yoga can transform our perceptions of our circumstances and ourselves.
Yoga has proven to reduce symptoms of MS including fatigue and muscle weakness. Immerse yourself in a weekend of Yoga designed specifically for people who have multiple sclerosis:
  • Adaptive asana to stretch and release tension in muscles and joints
  • Breathing techniques to increase energy and release tension
  • Restorative Yoga for deep relaxation and stress release
  • Yoga nidra and visualization for deep peace and inner healing
  • Meditation techniques for inner stillness
  • And, fun activities, too!
Participants will leave with new skills, an individually designed home practice, and new friends. Breathe, you can relax now … Yoga Heals Us.

Note:
If you need personal assistance, please arrange for a support person to attend the program with you.

Location:  Yogaville, 108 Yogaville Way, Buckingham, Virginia 23921

Message from Karen
Dear friends,

So much to do, so little time...isn't that a mantra of sorts.  I hope that you take time this summer to reverse that manta...so much time, so little to do...enjoy each day as it comes...sunshine or rain or both.

I'm kicking back this summer (a little!)  Reading novels and some serious stuff too.  To the beach at least once a week (haha - I stay about an hour.)  Getting together with family and friends.  Motorcycle rides with my husband.  Walks along the water with my dog.  Ice cream at Buttonwoods (wouldn't be summer without that!)  Even playing tourist in Mystic, why not!

In 2 weeks my daughter Rebecca goes to Kenya as a volunteer for 2 weeks of educational mission work.  She's one of the youngest volunteers traveling with the American Friends of Kenya, a local volunteer organization.  (And she has worked very hard to earn the $4000 that it's costing her for this trip!)

AFK will be in Kenya to begin to set up a school which will serve girls in primary school level in Kibera.  Kibera slum is one of the largest slums in Kenya.  In this slum, 66% of all girls are prostitutes by the age of 16 due to extreme poverty.  Only 8% of girls in Kibera ever have the opportunity to go to school.  Read more about the school and what AFK is doing to help at this link:  http://www.afkinc.org/page.asp?ID=16
.

I hope you'll join me in praying for the success of this mission, now and for the future of children of Kibera.

Namaste, Karen

Yoga for Arthritis book review
I really like this book by Loren Fishman, MD and Ellen Saltonstall.  First, this book does a great job of explaining what arthritis is and how yoga is uniquely suited for people who have arthritis.  The 15 chapters include postures and modifications for different joints of the body.  For example, The Shoulders, The Hips, The Knees, etc.  There are even chapters on Scoliosis and Ankylosing Spondylitis.

If you have arthritis or know someone who does, this is a great resource for yoga and for arthritis.  The photos are quite comprehensive as are the 21 illustrations that include the knee joint, the hand, foot, spinal segments and more.

Available at your local bookstores and Amazon.com
