THE SARI SOLDIERS SCREENING AT NYC'S IFC CENTER
Hailed as "tough, multilayered" and "inspiring" by The Village Voice, THE SARI SOLDIERS is screening this week at the IFC Center in New York City. Produced with the assistance of the WMM Production Assistance Program and also distributed by WMM, THE SARI SOLDIERS was filmed over three of the most pivotal years in the modern history of Nepal and tells an extraordinary story of six women's courageous efforts to shape Nepal's future in the midst of an escalating civil war. As part of the International Documentary Association's DocuWeeks, it continues screening this week through August 20 at the IFC Center in New York, with filmmaker Julie Bridgham in attendance for Q&As. Later this month, watch THE SARI SOLDIERS at a special screening and discussion and meet Julie Bridgham at New York City's Rubin Museum of Art on August 26 at 7pm. WOMEN MAKE MOVIES FILM FESTIVAL AT THE ROXIE THEATER
 From August 28 through September 3, the Women Make Movies Film Festival will feature 22 WMM films on the big screen, including new releases and top favorites, at San Francisco's Roxie Theater. The festival opens with Gemma Cubero and Celeste Carrasco's ELLA ES EL MATADOR (She is the Matador), a fascinating profile of two female bullfighters that makes its national broadcast premiere on P.O.V.'s 2009 Season on PBS September 1, and Kim Longinotto's Sundance World Cinema Documentary Jury Prize-winning film ROUGH AUNTIES, about a group of fearless women fighting for abused and neglected children in South Africa, to be broadcast on HBO in 2010.
Other festival highlights include SAY MY NAME, a global tour of unstoppable female hip-hop lyricists, and closing night feature WHO'S AFRAID OF KATHY ACKER?, a thoughtful biography on the late outlaw writer and punk icon.

THE GREATEST SILENCE: RAPE IN THE CONGO NOMINATED FOR TWO EMMY AWARDS
Lisa Jackson's THE GREATEST SILENCE: RAPE IN THE CONGO has received two News & Documentary Emmy Award nominations, for Outstanding Informational Programming – Long Form and Outstanding Individual Achievement in a Craft: Writing. Shot in the war zones of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Jackson's film shatters the silence that surrounds the use of sexual violence as a weapon of conflict.
A WALK TO BEAUTIFUL, directed by Amy Bucher, produced by Steve Engel, and co-produced and co-directed by Mary Olive Smith, was also nominated for Outstanding Informational Programming – Long Form. Produced with the assistance of the WMM Production Assistance Program, this film tells the stories of five Ethiopian women who suffer from devastating childbirth injuries and embark on a journey to reclaim their lost dignity.
Emmy Award winners will be announced on September 20. Congratulations to the filmmakers!

WMM AWARDED NEA AMERICAN RECOVERY AND REINVESTMENT ACT GRANT AND INCREASED NYSCA FUNDING
 Women Make Movies was one of 33 media arts organizations--and one of only five in New York City--recently awarded an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). The grant is given to nonprofit arts organizations to support the preservation of jobs threatened by the current economic downturn. WMM also received a large increase in its own annual funding from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA).

A RECORD NUMBER OF WMM FILMMAKERS RECEIVE NYSCA INDIVIDUAL ARTISTS' GRANTS
 A record number of WMM filmmakers were awarded grants from the NYSCA Individual Artists' Program, which provides funding to support work on current film productions. Highlights include Judith Helfand (COOKED), Katja Esson (POETRY OF RESILIENCE), Nandini Sikand (SOME GIRLS), Immy Humes (LIFE WITHOUT), Michele Fillion (NO JOB FOR A WOMAN), and Miao Wang (BEIJING TAXI).

SEARCHING 4 SANDEEP BROADCAST PREMIERE ON LOGO
Poppy Stockell's SEARCHING 4 SANDEEP makes its broadcast premiere this week on Logo, airing from August 22 through 24. Humorous and thoughtful, SEARCHING 4 SANDEEP explores the collision of love and ethnic, religious, and sexual identity.
