Yoga Kriyas for Health Restoration & Optimal Wellness By Dax Parcells, RYT, Ph. D.(c)
“The art of progress is to preserve order amid change and to preserve change amid order.” — Alfred North Whitehead
The canvas of life affords us new beginnings, yet new beginnings end. Amidst potential turmoil in change, embrace the power of your inner artist. We encounter changes daily… as we transition into the fall season, which began with the September 22nd equinox, and look ahead to the end of Daylight Savings Time on November 1st, there may be no greater time than the month of October to focus on health and wellness. Begin this month to develop a flexible yet sound routine that embraces change while preserving your own worldly order and vice versa. Be guided by your intuition of a sensible routine that will serve you as prepare for the dance of life in the final months of 2009.
As the holidays approach, celebrate life, family, and self by taking your health into your own hands. Be progressive about your own healthcare by engaging yoga more fully— remember, yoga transcends the work we do on the mat! The eight-fold yogic path set forth by Patanjali details a complete self-care approach that includes yamas (how we treat others and the world) and niyamas (how we treat ourselves) in addition to asanas (postures), pranayama (breath control), and pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses). Each of the foregoing serves as a foundation for the continued spiritual development of concentrated, one-pointed mind focus (dharana), heightened awareness/oneness (dhyana), and ultimately absolute bliss (samadhi).
By performing ritual action, or kriya, we live out the eight limbs of the yogic path to effect the restoration of health and/or the maintenance of optimal wellness. Evoke the power of niyamas by being steadfast with your own personal rituals. Developing a simple kriya practice begins with upholding general hygiene, ingesting the purest of food/water, practicing basic asanas/pranayama, and keeping your thoughts and action wholesome through meditation and karma yoga. More specifically, in an effort to keep you well during this “flu season,” focus on the use of the neti pot (alone or in conjunction with essential oils), coupled with kapalabhati (skull shining breath) and trataka (yogic gazing exercise, which often utilizes a candle flame although any uplifting “object” will also work… so make the practice as personal as you desire).
By using the neti pot, we keep our nasal passages and sinuses clear of bacteria and viruses (including the viruses that cause in“flu”enza). The practice of kapalabhati pranayama further supports respiratory health in addition to purifying the mind by removing distractions, thus creating ample “mental space” for meditation and contemplation. Trataka cleanses tear ducts of invading microorganisms and also effects inner peace. Essential oils have powerful wellness benefits ranging from easing anxiety (by calming the nervous system) to protecting and building the body’s lines of defense (i.e., immune system).
Consider the following ritual action practice* as an integrative approach to liberating you from dis-ease in your pursuit of optimal wellness! Personal wellness (physical, emotional, and spiritual health) is indeed the most perfect gift for self, friends, and family… so share this information in the spirit of giving as we approach the holidays:
- Start by sitting comfortably. Stare, with eyes wide open, at the flame of a candle for 30 seconds to 1 minute (gradually increasing the length of time as the eyes grow stronger or whenever you have more time). Try not to blink, but don’t get frustrated with the practice if you’re unable to hold the position initially.
- Close your eyes gently and allow your eyes to water, releasing with the tears any emotions that no longer serve you. Focus inwardly at the point between the eyebrows (third-eye center), and visualize the “flame” as it eliminates any mental debris and physical toxins.
- Cleanse your nasal passages with an isotonic solution of salt water with 1-2 drops of peppermint, tea tree, or eucalyptus essential oil. Follow the basic instructions with any commercially available neti pot for best results.
- Engage in 2-3 rounds of 20-60 cleansing kapalabhati breaths by forcefully exhaling through the nose as you pull your bellybutton toward your spine; allow the inhale to occur naturally without effort or strain.
- Apply 2-3 drops of Thieves essential oil (a blend of clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus, and rosemary) diluted in your favorite oil base to your nares (openings of the nose), above your eyebrows, to the pinnae of your ears, and rub gently by your temples. You may also ingest (orally) 1 drop of Thieves essential oil (in a spoonful of agave), ideally after brushing your teeth and cleansing the tongue with a stainless steel tongue scraper.
- Sit quietly for meditation, reflecting on positive images, and/or perform trataka once more. Consider the use of a personal mantra or the universal mantra “OM” for japa (mental repetition of mantra) to calm the mind.
- Perform 10-15 minutes of asanas (on your own or with a partner) or stop by the studio for a variety of yoga offerings ranging from 60 to 90+ minutes of Yin Yoga, Kripalu, Vinyasa Flow, Ashtanga Primary Series, and more!
Om Tryambakam Yajamahe_Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam_ Urvarukamiva Bandhanan_ Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat
We meditate on the three-eyed reality which permeates and nourishes all like a fragrance. _May we be liberated from death for the sake of immortality, even as the cucumber is severed from bondage to the creeper.
* Before beginning this or any health practice, consult your physician. For optimal results, you may also consider receiving instruction from your favorite, qualified yoga professional and/or complementary and alternative medicine practitioner.
