REGGAE ARTIST SLASHED BY SWORD IN ATTACK
Associated Press
NEW YORK — Jamaican reggae artist Major Mackerel was slashed Sunday on the head, arm and hand by a neighbor wielding a two-foot-long sword, the musician and police said.

Major Mackerel, who attracted some recognition in the 1980s and 1990s as a dancehall reggae artist, was seen hours after the attack returning to his Brooklyn home. He had white bandages crowning his dreadlocks and wrapped around one hand, a wrist and elbow.

"I had a fight and I got cut," Major Mackerel told the Daily News.

The reggae artist, whose real name is Garfield Dixon, said he got into a fight earlier in the day with a neighbor, identified by police as Oscar Joseph, outside a two-story brick house on East 91st Street where they live on separate floors.

Dixon's girlfriend, Novia Watson, said that Joseph was angry because he believed Dixon had flirted with his wife, but the musician denied ever bothering the woman.

Police said they were called to the house about 8 a.m., where they recovered the sword and arrested the 37-year-old Joseph on charges of assault with intent to cause serious injury with a weapon and menacing.

‘REGGAE TOURISM’ HURTS JAMAICAN IDENTITY, PROF. SAYS
By Richard Fu

Carolyn Cooper of the University of the West Indies in Jamaica explored the interplay between reggae and Reggae has evolved from a gritty, rhythmic invocation against social and political injustice to a pleasant, sappy background music accompanying commercials, according to Carolyn Cooper, a professor at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica.

Cooper, who delivered a lecture in the Haldeman Center on Friday, said that despite reggae’s many changes in form and style, in pure form it remains the heart and soul of Jamaica and its people.

Reggae will also be forever marred by advertisements promoting heritage tourism in Jamaica that distort the true beat behind a music some have now labeled as belonging only in elevators, Cooper said.
Cooper acknowledged that heritage tourism, for all its flaws, is an indispensable part of the Jamaican economy — reggae has the power to fill Jamaica’s empty hotels and support its local businesses with capital from visitors from all over the world, Cooper said.

Cooper also emphasized the major pitfall of “reggae tourism”: The promotion of Jamaica as a tourist hotspot, the natives as exotic locals and reggae as mainstream pop only further connects the Jamaican population with an economic scheme that cannot serve as a permanent solution.

“Americans go on vacation to escape the mundane banalities of their lives,” she said. “Most Jamaicans can’t afford to do that. They envy your ability to escape your boredom and turn theirs into your pleasure.”

The issue, according to Cooper, isn’t that tourism is wrong, but that advertising agencies are promoting Jamaica in such a way that it is challenging the nation’s identity.

It sometimes seems as if it is more about the tourists than the people, Cooper said, as natives often cannot even obtain seats to popular reggae festivals.

Cooper illustrated the tension between the “real” Jamaica and the Jamaica featured on glossy brochures with the example of Damian “Junior Gong” Marley’s “Welcome to Jamrock.” The grim, ominous track, Cooper said, “militantly contests the Jamaica Tourist Board’s appropriation of [Bob Marley’s] disquieting ‘One Love’ as an unambiguous anthem of social harmony: ‘Come to Jamaica and feel alright.’”

Cooper said that the tourist board, in promoting Jamaica as a place of peace and harmony, naturally does not want the world to hear the gritty underbelly of reggae.

For example, Bob Marley’s original lyrics for “One Love” were quite dark.

“Is there a place for the hopeless sinner/Who has hurt all mankind just to save his own?” he wrote.

Bob Marley’s lyrics, Cooper said, represent an attempt to find true peace and harmony in Jamaica while acknowledging that the nation is marked by economic instability, high crime rates and other social blights.

Reggae in its raw, unaltered form unflinchingly deals with subjects ranging from religion to love, sexuality and poverty, according to Cooper.

“It is a rhythmic resistance against the system of exploitation of people,” Cooper said.

The challenge, Cooper pointed out, is to tap into Jamaica’s tourist income without dehumanizing the people and marginalizing the culture.

Cooper suggested, however, that not all is glum: For all the waves of tourism and commercialization, Cooper said, reggae remains intrinsically Jamaican and continues to serve not only as a source of a pride, but as an outlet for the local Jamaicans.

Cooper remarked that just as jazz and rock-and-roll, while still influential, are no longer regarded as the “popular” music of our era, reggae too will become “old people’s music” one day.

But for now, it remains the authentic manifestation of Jamaica’s culture, a resounding affirmation of the Jamaican people’s creativity and inspiration.

Marko : : All the Love That I've Found
-release date: August 8th, 2009

West coast rub a dub reggae artist, Marko released his debut album "All the Love that I've Found" on August 8th at the North West World Music Festival 2009.  The album flows like Yellowman and Brigadier Jerry stoppin by for a session with Sublime at a smokey backyard jam.

"All the Love that I've Found" is the perfect soundtrack for a hot summer; 1980's Jamaican swag with a half baked, west coast twist. The songs on All the Love that I've Found resonate with good vibes and love, as well as remind us of the charm and color that surround everyday events.  Marko's songs are sincere and his style is true.  His music effortlessly reflects the decades of Jamaican music he has immersed himself in, while candidly showing he's just another white kid, drinkin, smokin, straight west-coastin.  All the Love... accurately portrays Marko's day to day life, where making music, praising Jah, giving thanks, coolin' with my baby, vaporizing, and half-price pizza all meld into each other. For the month of October, Marko will be donating all album sales to Great Shape Inc.

Reggae Got Soul
The album is now available digitally
http://www.myspace.com/wondersoundja
"Reggae Got Soul" is a traditional reggae riddim album with a number of artists each voicing unique mix-downs of the same rhythm track.  The beat is based on a Casio CZ101 bassline reminiscent of 1980's digital dancehall, and is layed over thuggy hip hop drums and punctuated with various skanks and FX.  Jason Poras (Jace) and Peter Wade produced the album at their studios in NYC, with some feature guests recorded in Jamaica and Italy.

A number of new up-and-coming artists are featured on "Reggae Got Soul," alongside classic DJ's and singers including the legendary Sugar Minott, and iTunes 2008 #1 artist, Jahdan Blakkamoore.
Other features include rapper Izza Kizza (Timbaland, Missy Elliot), NYC's notorious 77-Klash, and Jamaica's gravel-voiced DJ Lion.
A number of American top-of-the-pop hit songwriters also lent their voices, including Andrea Martin (Leona Lewis, Monica, En Vogue), Shelene Thomas (Nas, Santana, Tan-Yah Records) and Michelle Lynn Bell (Mary J Blige, Jennifer Lopez, Lynn & Wade LLP, Miley Cyrus).  Also look for hard cuts by New York rude-boy King Django and Philly's master of gangster chat, Stamma Ramma.
Highah Seekah has the title track.

Highah Seekah hails from Westmoreland, Jamaica. His tuff reggae style was recently noticed by the Reggae Festival Guide which named him "Reggae Artist on the Rise" in 2007. Taking the ""Reggae Got Soul"" riddim's title as his inspiration, Seekah delivers a song of livity and upliftment and sings the praise of good reggae music delivering the proof that Reggae's got soul. With a number of hot albums under his belt and his star on the rise, Highah Seekah has his eye set on highah heights and more big tunes with WonderSound JA. http://www.myspace.com/highahseekah

HAPPINESS LIES WITHIN
The first thing we must understand is that without inner peace, we cannot find happiness, no matter how hard we try. We want to be happy, but in most cases we find a lot of suffering and frustration. In fact, it is the way in which we seek our happiness that is wrong. It is as if we walked south to look for someting that lies to the north.

Our problem is that we always seek outside ourselves what is in fact already within us. We are like a very poor family that works very hard all day long to survive, while the stones of their cooking place are made of solid gold. Having not realised that, they seek in the outer world what they abundantly have at home.

The mind is what apprehends all things and all sensations. It is at the base of all our experiences. Whatever material well-being we enjoy, if our mind is tormented, we cannnot appreciate this opportunity. If, on the contrary, our mind is open and at peace, we can enjoy the simplest pleasures with great intensity. It follows that happiness depends much more on our state of mind than on external conditions.

Despite the fact that all human beings want to be happy, very few take the time to train their minds to awaken positive qualities.
