November/December 2009 - An Embarrassment of Riches
Will the familiar waft of sizzling turkey awaken you on Thanksgiving morning? How about the sound of your wife and daughter, happily cranking out rolls and pies in the kitchen? Company's comin'! Rise and shine, lay a fire, get up the last of the leaves! The casserole-laden entourage of crazy aunts and adorable grandmothers will descend on my home soon - just in time to stuff ourselves, take the group picture, throw a football, and walk Lakeshore before dragging out the leftovers.
Never am I more satisfied with or thankful for my home than during the holidays, when it's full of the most comforting visions of flowers and family, aromas of fire and food, the cheery sounds of laughter, children, and clinking crystal, and the sweet touch of my daughter's small hand in mine as we ask the blessing. As my grandmother used to say, "It's an embarrassment of riches!"
My hope for you is that your home provides the backdrop for warmth and love to flourish every day, that you find comfort and security just pulling in the driveway, and there's no place you'd rather be than right there. If it's not - call me! I've got just the place, and we can get you moved in before Christmas.
Happy Holidays,
Richard A. Smith, President & Principal Broker

Season's Greenings
Reduce Stress, Reuse Everything, Recycle Love
Gift This! - Think durable, simple, warranted. Consider the gift's impact on the environment. Give a garden: seeds, gloves, tools, etc. Give an experience: train ride, spa day, trip, tickets to an event. Give yourself: fix food, keep the kids, wash the car, rake the yard.
Smart Parties! - Buy food and drink in bulk to reduce packaging. Use reusable tableware. Borrow, don't buy, what you're short on. Consider new ways to use old decorations - ornaments as placecards, all the mis-matched red candles in one mass arrangement with greenery from your yard on the buffet, trimmings from the tree tucked among the de-cluttered, year-round shelf displays.
Oh Christmas Tree! - Edible ornaments of gingerbread or sugar cookies; popcorn and cranberry strings; apple, orange and clove pomanders - the birds will love it later on. An old full skirt makes a great tree skirt. String old buttons for garland.
Wrap it up! - Scarves, handkerchiefs, or that fabric you were saving to make a quilt; kid-decorated boxes; tie a bit of greenery or an old ornament to last year's ribbon; present in a present - kitchen gifts in hand-towels, picnic supplies in a tablecloth, cookies in a coookie jar.
