The Blood Moon

This most recent full moon, which happened just two days ago, is known as the Blood Moon--through to the new moon on November 16. Halloween is just one way to honor this time of year. Many other cultures honor it by celebrating and remembering their sacred ancestors during Day of the Dead feasts. The two started out as one celebration, when folks left a feast out on the doorstep for the ancestor spirits who would come masked to retrieve it.

AFull Moon Risinglso known as Shedding Moon or Falling Leaf Moon, Blood Moon refers to the time of year when traditional people hunted or took the lives of their livestock. As they nourished themselves and stored meat for the coming winter, they also reduced the number of livestock dependent on dwindling food supplies.

Persephone, the embodiment of the earth’s fertility, leaves her mother Demeter, the earth goddess, to live in the underworld, thus symbolizing winter. During this time she reigns as Queen of the underworld, or innerworld. She teaches us to honor the darkness, the spiritual growth, and renewal that can happen there.

Conference News

We are thrilled that over 600 women attended the Southeast Women's Herbal Conference this year, more than ever--the Wise Woman Tradition is rising up!

A huge "thanks, ya'll!"  to the hundreds of women who participated in filling out the online conference evaluations. From the amazing testimonials to the suggestions for improvement, all the feedback is so valuable to us in planning for next year. And as we reflect on a full year of hard work, your positive affirmations keep us going! Congratulations to the winners of the gift baskets: Toni McKeone from Media, PA and Kat Stratton from Dawsonville, GA.

Among the raves for the Advanced track and the Tending Spirits track (both offered for the first time this year!), along with the complaints about the long meal lines (we're working on it....), the numbers, once again, speak to the depth of this weekend experience: 65% of women said the conference not only met but even exceeded their expectations, and 80% said they'd likely attend next year.

Here's what some of the womenStrong Hug had to say:

"I came to the conference as my first weekend away since having my son almost 2 years ago.  I had been working on weaning him, which was an emotional process.  Being among a group of powerful women and learning how to better care for myself, my family and my community was empowering and was just what I needed to get through this life transition.  It was the perfect environment to begin reexploring myself as a woman as I had been so focused on myself as a mother.  I left with a better sense of balance-a blessing to be sure!" Lisa Schactman, Mill Spring NC.
  • "It just gets better and better each year."
  • "The love and encouragement shared by all the women who attend the conference is enough to last me the entire year."
  • "By Sunday, the feelings of being uplifted and empowered are visible on the faces of every conference attendee."

Corinna's Corner
As much as I love the green, growing things, and the blossoms of summer, this is truly my favorite time of the year. As the frosts come, the plants send their energy below the ground to the roots.

This is the time we harvest our medicinal roots for tinctures and oils: echinacea, burdock, dandelion, black cohosh, poke, yellow dock. This year with all the rain, the roots are loose and pliable, yielding themselves to the medicine.

It’s also the time of year where my teaching schedule takes a break and I’m home more, hunkered down for the winter. I take lessons from the plants: it’s time to nurture and revitalize, to store energy until next year when all the outward activity will begin again.

I use this opportunity to connect deeply with my son who has ridden the waves of busy-ness during these seasons as much as I have. I also cook more, making rich, nourishing soups and lacto fermented baked goods.

In the Chinese medicine wheel of the year, this is the time of metal. Time to tend to our lungs, and their sister parts the skin and nose, as this is a time when the body often cleanses. Instead of being scared of that process, we can nurture ourselves to prevent illness and care for ourselves if it comes. In the Wise Woman tradition, illness is not bad or wrong, it is a time for tending.

My favorite herbs for this season are roots--Echinacea and tonifying herbs like the Dandelion, Burdock, and Yellow Dock in the Deep Roots blend.
