Last Med-Vet-Net newsletter
This newsletter signals the end of the Network of Excellence, Med-Vet-Net. The project officially ended on 31 October 2009, and work is now underway to produce the final reports to submit to the European Commission.
We would like to thank you for your interest in Med-Vet-Net over the last five years. Many of you have been directly involved in the project, but equally, many of you with an interest in zoonoses have subscribed to this newsletter to keep up-to-date with research and development in their field.
With the new Med-Vet-Net Association in its infancy, membership and communications are not yet fully established. However, we will keep you informed of the progress provide you with an option to continue to receive information in due course.

New report showcases Med-Vet-Net's achievements
Med-Vet-Net has drawn the final curtain on five years of EC funding with the launch of its showcase achievements report entitled Building a European Community to Combat Zoonoses. The report, unveiled at the handover event on 6 October, details Med‑Vet‑Net’s long list of scientific achievements across the spectrum of its thematic disciplines from epidemiology and surveillance to risk research and disease control.

The Med-Vet-Net Association to capitalize on success
The newly formed Med-Vet-Net Association was officially launched at the October handover meeting with the announcement of the Association’s 10 means of action. The self-funded Association, which currently comprises all 14 of the Network’s scientific partners, is set to become Med-Vet-Net’s most enduring legacy and will build on the success of its predecessor by strengthening existing partnerships and forging new collaborations both within Europe and around the world.

The end of the beginning
I write this with both sadness and excitement. Sadness in that, after five years, Med-Vet-Net as we know it is coming to an end; excitement in that the work and scientific collaborations we started in Med-Vet-Net will not only continue in the Med-Vet-Net Association but hopefully expand and, in due course, encompass new areas, new challenges, new institutes and new personnel along with existing collaborators.
