WARRIOR KING AND GYPTIAN IN SANTA CRUZ, CA TONIGHT!!!
|
|
|
Friday, November 13
Two of Reggae’s Greatest Vocalists Share the Stage! WARRIOR KING & GYPTIAN Plus Lionheart Sounds
Moe’s Alley - 1535 Commercial Way Santa Cruz CA 95060 Doors 9pm $25 advance 21+
Good Vibez & Moe's Alley proudly present one of the most exciting reggae events of the year featuring Warrior King & Gyptian backed by a live band. This will be Gyptians first performance ever in Santa Cruz so come out and support this rare musical treat. Lionheart sounds will be in the house nicing up the vibez on the 1's and 2's before and after.
Warrior King and Gyptian are currently two of the most talented young conscious recording artists and performers to come out of Jamaica. In 2001 Virtuous Woman was an international hit for Warrior King. Since then, he has graced most of the major festivals worldwide, and continued to build a strong, high caliber catalogue.
Co-billing with Warrior King on is Gyptian, who gave us the mega hit Serious Times in 2006. Serious Times popularity led to Gyptian’s performing on most of the major stage shows in Jamaica, as well as many international festivals. As a tour package, Gyptian and Warrior King is a very dynamic lineup that will surely have the houses rocking, non-stop.
“Love is in the air” as Warrior King performs on his live shows. He touches people’s hearts singing with youthful energy and enthusiasm, and vocal melody with a message of universal upliftment. His new CD, mixed and soon to be released, is called – Love is in the Air. Warrior King has recently had numerous successful singles, including Melody, Mercy Please (with Black Judah), Empress, Oh What a Feeling, Signs of the Time and Wanting You. Mercy Please was number one on the Jamaican charts in 2008, and Signs of the Time is big in Europe. Wanting You came out hot on the airwaves in August 2008, along with a video, which has also gotten a lot of play. Wanting You is a single from his new album - Love is in the Air.
Gyptian is a young new artist with a lot of promise. His first CD is called My Name is Gyptian, which was released on VP Records in 2006. His next CD is called, I Can Feel Your Pain. Besides Serious Times, other of his hit songs are Beng Beng, School Girl, Ma Ma, Beautiful Lady, Nobody No Cry, Too Bad Mind, Keep Your Calm and Touch.
At the Reggae Rising festival in Humboldt CA, Gyptian was well received and applauded, and he has been similarly appreciated on the east coast and up into eastern Canada, where reggae music has a strong following. Gyptian, in his music career, cut right through, quickly. He was embraced by the people right from the start, without having to struggle long for acceptance. He gets a great deal of love from the media and the public. His message has mass appeal. Gyptian comes with charisma - conscious and uplifting. His popularity cuts across the age groups. He is loved by the young and old, and by the die-hard reggae enthusiasts. Straight away, he won awards for Best New Reggae Artist and Most Promising Entertainer amoungst others.
There is great anticipation for the western U.S. fans to see Gyptian perform live, since to date, he has only worked on the west coast at Reggae Rising and at the Shatto Ballroom in LA. Gyptian’s LA show caused a roadblock, or traffic jam due to his strong draw. The west coast DJ’s are currently playing a lot of his songs, and the women and younger girls love his music.
Warrior King recently returned from another European tour in May / June 2009. Before that he toured Europe in February / March 2009. He tours there consistently. September 2009, he is slated to tour Japan. So, Warrior King is regularly making the international circuit.
July 2008 Warrior King did a successful Western US tour, which included the festivals Reggae on the River, The Adamari Caribbean Festival at the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA and The Northwest World Reggae Festival in Eugene, OR. Around the same time, he also did The Montreal Reggae Festival in eastern Canada and some spot dates on the east coast. Prior to that, he has done The Sierra Nevada World Music festival and the original Reggae on the River numerous times, and he has also done other US tours. Warrior King is currently under new management with Higher Level Promotion, headed by Clayton Thomas, otherwise known as “Massive”, out of New York City.
“Like a breath of fresh air”, Warrior King carries a loving youthful spirit on and off the stage. He is gifted at doing interviews, singing, songwriting and producing. His message is cleaner and more uplifting than most of his contemporaries. Warrior king is in good form, and the people are always happy and excited to see him. His enthusiastic stage presence and joyful presentation are now better than ever.

'SMILE JAMAICA' CONCERT RETURNS NEXT YEAR
|
|
|
Nine Miles, St Ann, will be smiling once again as the Bob Marley celebratory concert, Smile Jamaica, returns to the reggae icon's home.
The concert will culminate Bob Marley Week and will be a major feature once more of Reggae Month. The show, which is scheduled for Bob Marley's birthday, Saturday, February 6, 2010, enjoys the support of the Jamaica Tourist Board and the Jamaica Cultural and Development Commission.
Jerome Hamilton of Headline Entertainment, in an interview with The Sunday Gleaner, explained, "In 2007, Ghetto Youths International wanted to stage an event that would honour Marley and we decided to keep it in Bob's hometown. In 2008, Smile Jamaica and Africa Unite combined for a memorable event, and Smile Jamaica took a break in 2009. Everything has its season, the timing wasn't ideal last year but Ghetto Youths thought it prudent to stage it for 2010."
While the 2008 concert took place on the shores of James Bond Beach in St Mary, in February the hills of Nine Miles, walking distance from Marley's resting place, will be lit with a little Marley magic once more.
In December 1976, at National Heroes Park in Kingston, the first Smile Jamaica concert was held, featuring Bob Marley and the Wailers. The event took place two days after Marley had almost been killed by gunmen in his house, but survived and sought solace in the Blue Mountains. Nevertheless, Marley agreed to perform one song for the 80,000 people in attendance, which turned into a 90-minute performance despite his injuries. All Wailers performed except bassman Aston 'Family Man' Barrett. After this concert, Marley went on a self-imposed exile that saw him travelling to Bermuda, the United States and the United Kingdom. He returned in 1978 for the One Love Peace Concert held at the National Stadium.
Once again, said Hamilton, persons can experience the mystical aura of the show 'The Gong' started 33 years ago.
"Although it may sound cliché, when the concert was held in Nine Miles it had a mystical feeling. In that location you get a more intimate feeling, close to Marley's resting place and his birth place - you really feel connected. This year it falls exactly on Marley's birthday and closes the week of celebrations. Each year we get a good representation, a wide cross section of persons, even as far as from Australia, and a lot of international media."

JULIAN MARLEY BRINGS AWAKE TOUR TO MIAMI
|
|
|
source: sfltimes Written by RENEE MICHELLE HARRIS
Carrying on their father’s tradition of touching humanity with music, Julian Marley and his brothers will conclude the domestic leg of their “Awake” promotional tour in Miami.
Performing on Sunday, Nov. 22 at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, Julian Marley and his brothers, Stephen and Damian “Jr. Gong” will join newcomer, up-and-coming international reggae artist Javaughn, who will open for the famous Marley clan. “As Julian Marley says, ‘Music is the universal sound that bridges all barriers of language, culture and color,’ and we couldn’t agree more,” said M. John Richard, president and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center. “To have this talented family sharing our stage not only brings our diverse South Florida community together for a night of mind-bending soulful music, but also celebrates the heritage of the rich Marley name,” Richard said.
That rich Marley name stems, of course, from the world renowned reggae artist who even in death remains a strong family patriarch, the late Robert “Bob” Marley.
In a telephone interview from Colorado, Julian Marley told the South Florida Times that his father’s presence in his music is unmistakable; his presence in his life is palpable.
“My father is my teacher,” said Julian, 34, the tenth of the elder Marley’s 13 birth and adopted children.
Julian said his father’s message of justice, equality and social awareness is still very relevant and a driving force behind how he lives.
Asked to explain the impact of spirituality in his music, Julian said, “Music is vibration and spirituality is the main ingredient. Then again, I’m Rasta, meaning I’m spiritually inclined.”
Recorded in Miami and Jamaica, the Awake CD was released in May and features strong reggae beats infused with hip-hop and socially conscious lyrics.
The title song says, “When will we wake, we’ve got to wake. For many years, the prophets have spoken but will we hear?... And still, we can’t find no peace of mind. When will we wake? We’ve got to wake… We’ve fought so many battles, for whom. Yet our minds remain in shackles. Open up your eyes and you will see.”
Marley said the tour, which kicked off on Nov. 3 in Salt Lake City, Utah, has been well received. His third studio release, Awake was preceded by Lion in the Morning, released in 1996 and A Time and Place, released in 2003.
If he wasn’t carrying on the Marley musical tradition, Julian said that he would still be involved with writing somehow, though he’d find using the written word without music daunting.
“You can hide behind the music,” he chuckled. Of the songwriting process, he said that frequently the melody comes first, however; “sometimes the music and the melody come together.”
During a “Giving Thanks With The Marleys” initiative, The Ghetto Youths Foundations is asking attendees to bring non-perishable canned goods to the event. These donations will be given to CHARLEE (Children Have All Rights: Legal, Educational and Emotional) Homes for Children to help feed over 170 young adults who have aged out of foster care, and to provide food for families in need during the Thanksgiving holiday.
WHAT: Julian Marley and the Uprising Concert
WHEN: Sunday, Nov. 22 at 8 p.m.
WHERE: Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, 1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami.
Price: $24.50 to $44.50. Tickets can be purchased through the Adrienne Arsht Center box office at 305-949-6722 or online at www.arshtcenter.org

David Kirton: The Ambassador of Barbados interviewed by James Curt Byrum
|
|
|
Emerging from Barbados, Reggae Artist David Kirton grew up listening to a lot of classic Caribbean melodies. This reflects in his music and his passion. With influences like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Steel Pulse, he has not wandered too far from his roots. Yet he has a style that mirrors his independent and easy going nature. In 2008, David managed to pull off a “hat trick” by winning Video, Song, and Artist of the Year in Barbados.
His song “Green Camouflage” has struck a chord with fans all over the world as a modern roots anthem. “It is against the law in Barbados to wear those colors. You may be arrested, searched, or harassed by police if you wear it” David says. “It has been stigmatized by the government as being worn only by those who sell drugs, thieves, and revolutionaries”, he says. “Just last week a youth was arrested after having his house searched.” If that is not art imitating life, I don’t know what is.
I found David to be a very inspirational, humble, and genuine artist; his love of songwriting is at the forefront of his music. He plays guitar well, which adds an element to his writing that is uniquely his own. He says, “It is an important part of my songwriting, it helps me stay in the zone and can often enhance the composition of a song.”
His song “Sugar” shows that he’s not saccharine. David’s dual meaning lyrics lead many to a forked road as he turns over yet another stone. At first glance his songwriting would have you believe, he's talking about a woman. Instead, he tells a story about the sugar industry in Barbados that has been embedded in the roots and struggle of his Nation.
On David’s current recording, “Time for Change” he has produced his best work yet. With tunes like Free to Fly, Green Camouflage, and the Title track, he has cemented himself as an uprising star. Right now he is touring in California, U.S.A. and is certainly becoming entrenched with his fans there, along with expanding that base. He has already written several songs for his upcoming release and played many of them as he opened for Inner Circle in Santa Cruz where I saw him perform live. His next big hit is sure to be “Hand to Mouth” another encouraging call for the humble to keep the faith and in time, you will be lifted up.
".....I ain't looking for no pot of gold, I see rainbows fade from the sky. Talking ‘bout Hand to Mouth, See how we’re living? Every day is the same thing. Before we get the money it’s all ready spent, Can't get the hole in the pocket to mend......” D. Kirton(Hand to Mouth)
Of the song he remarks, “The greater the size of the battle, the sweeter the victory!"
This is the David Kirton, I’ve come to know. Respect.

GOOD VIBEZ PRESENTS...
|
|
Good Vibez Presents is proud to announce..... Reggae music live from Germany, London, California and Jamaica. The Far East Band With TIPPA IRIE, JAH SUN and STEVIE CULTURE will be touring the west coast in February 2010. Book your event today daniel@goodvibezpresents.com
The Far East Band has been playing together since the early 90's, but the end of 2001 proved to be decisive for the future of the Band: Gentleman asked if The Far East Band would accompany him on hundreds of concerts throughout Europe, California, Jamaica, Bermuda, Marocco, Suriname; Televised concerts, and a live DVD that is heard around the world. Inspired by the world-wide positive reaction to the live album with Gentleman, The Far East Band decided to get their creative juices flowing and record their own album titled "Tough Enough" in 2007. The plan was to invite different Artists and open up the genre beyond Reggae and Dancehall. The Far East Band is currently wrapping up new projects, including an album with London's grammy nominated MC and DJ TIPPA IRIE and an EP with conscious sing-jay artist JAH SUN from Humboldt County, CA.
Anthony Henry - a.k.a. "Tippa Irie" emerged from England's Saxon Sound International - the star-studded travelling sound system that has been at the forefront of the U.K. reggae dancehall scene for the past 25 years and helped launch the careers of artists such as Maxi Priest, Papa Levi and Smiley Culture. Tippa Irie was part of the new generation of British MC's who developed the 'Fast Talking' style chat which today can be heard in modern day rappers like Busta Rhymes, Flo-Rida and many more.Tipps latest offering is entitled "TALK THE TRUTH" and was released on his own lablel LockDown Productions LTD and distributed trough out the world from Greensleeves Records. "Talk the truth" features an impressive 22 tracks and guest artists include Atlantic recording artist Elephant Man, Jurassic 5's Chali 2NA, veteran reggae artist Frankie Paul and China Black's Errol Reid peppered with an eclectic mix of producers at the helm: Mafia & Fluxy, Peter Hunnigale, Peckings, LockDown Productions and Pow Pow. In 2008 Tippa linked up with Yeti Beats from LA to work on another LP where he shows that he is not limited to any genre and no slave to the norm. The LP will be released in late 2009! Never the less the entertainer followed his roots and so he spends nuff time in the studio right now to record another LP with Far East Band from Germany. The first tracks of both LPs sounds very impressive and everybody should watch out for Tippa Irie!
JahSun: From the heart of Humboldt County, where the redwoods meet the Pacific, Jah Sun emerges as an artist dedicated to global and social healing. Fusing the sounds of hip-hop, reggae and world music with conscious and uplifting lyrics, Jah Sun hopes to awaken the human spirit and inspire others to live to their ultimate potential. Jah Sun’s debut album, “Height of Light” (More Love Productions & Moodswing Records, 2006), features some of reggae's top recording artists such as Luciano, Junior Reid, Lutan Fyah and Grammy Award winner, Yami Bolo. Jah Sun brings his message of love and unity with a variety of vocal styles. From fierce hip-hop explosions like "Nuff a Dem" and melodic ballads paying respect to generations of family in "Circles and Cycles", to rootsy anthems like ‘More Love’ and sensual, dancehall licks in ‘Fyah Dance’ Jah Sun brings something for everyone. Regardless of style, the common theme throughout all of his music maintains the messages of positivity, love and respect, and kindness to all. In the words of Chuck Foster in The Beat Magazine, “Jah Sun shines brightly on the “Height of Light”…the message remains positive and focused throughout…and offers some solution to the social problems addressed.”

FORMULLA : : MEANINGFUL MUZIC
|
|
Formulla – Meaningful muzic (album review by DJ Sinner the King Spinner)
I wonder how many Reggae DJ's/fans like myself have bought an album, and on second listening decided there were just 2 or 3 tracks that stood out, thankfully this is not so with rising artist ‘Formulla’.
Formulla approaches each individual track from a differing perspective, varying his tone and message according to the lyric topic, which can span anywhere between life experiences of himself and others right through to spiritual remedies and warnings to the youth.....
If I were to describe Meaningful muzic CD to you in one word it would be quality.... there is an evergreen quality about it that improves the more you listen.... from the deeply thought provoking and political ‘Local, state and federal’ to the soothing ‘muzic is in my body’ and ‘Journey to Jamaica’ this album takes you on a heady spiritual and uplifting journey.
Vocally Formulla comes through every time, adopting varying styles to match the passion the song topic requires.... unquestionably he has the vocal and song writing ability to share the stage with some of the greats of Reggae.
Formulla's choice of music appears carefully selected.... and is always reworked in a pleasing modern style... yes there is a sprinkle of more known riddims, but the majority are coming at you fresh in a nice balance of tempos, wherever you may be... on the dance floor, playing radio or cranking the car or home stereo.....
Many may not be aware that the great Reggae veterans Jah Shaka and Burning Spear both financially support orphanages and schools in Africa.... Formulla in the same spirit has pledged all profits from this and his new CD ‘A New Direction’ towards building a school in the community he was raised... (St Thomas in Jamaica)...... Formulla asks that you reach into your heart and help in any small way possible that assists the children of Jamaica get a better foundation. Further details on this vision can be provided by contacting ‘Formulla’ himself on the contacts below.

JOSEPH ISRAEL
Nov 14 – Café Culture – Chico, CA
All Ages!
Join JOSEPH ISRAEL & Band for conscious & positive roots reggae to sooth your soul! The crew just returned from Jamaica with a ton of new material for their next album “Kingdom Road”, set to release in 2010. Joseph is excited with the development of this new music & looks forward to showcasing some of it during this November tour. He states, “In this time of struggle these songs are like the voice of many people.” Look for Joseph Israel in November all along the Pacific Northwest! Also check out the ‘Soulution’ EP now available on iTunes.
Joseph Israel, born Joseph M. Fennel, is one of those unique individuals whose natural talents and spiritual calling have merged into a music that is as thought provoking as it is inspiring. “What I share with my audience is to draw everyone closer to the source of Truth – we are all brothers and sisters, and that division and lies cannot stand”. The name, Israel, is a reflection that defines Joseph’s striving for the blessings of the Almighty YHWH (pronounced ‘Yahweh’). This is the name intended for all peoples, tribes and tongues that love the Most High and love their neighbor. These are the teachings of Rabbi Yahshua of Nazareth the Messiah. We are all one family.
Joseph is truly blessed to have been surrounded by a deep sense of appreciation for all cultures as a youth. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Joe and Jean Ann Fennel, Israel was exposed to the works and writings of history makers like Martin Luther King Jr. His father and Uncle were also huge fans of reggae music and traveled often to Jamaica. At age 12 Joseph received his first reggae cassettes – Bob Marley, “Legend”, and Peter Tosh “Wanted Dead or Alive,” Jimmy Cliff, “Special”, Burning Spear, ‘Markus Garvey. Israel was inspired by their musicianship, but more importantly, by the message. “Their music really inspired me to become who I am. They were speaking about the truth, humanity and about changing things in a positive way. And even when things are tough, we must keep going. I found a common thread in reggae music that spoke to my heart.”
Naturally, Joseph began writing songs of his own, and formed the reggae band Kepha, (Aramaic for ‘Rock’) which did well regionally. The group recorded ‘Redemption Time’ in Fayetteville, AR. He also started the group Lions of Israel, whose modern day roots rocked the Midwest and beyond from 2002-2005. In 2004 Joseph was invited to open for Ziggy Marley at a sold-out concert in Fayetteville. His acoustic performance was captivating and propelled Joseph closer to the recording of his debut solo album “Gone Are the Days”. The album was self-produced and financed, and was recorded at Tuff Gong Studios in the heart of Kingston, Jamaica. Its lyrics are of headline-torn news reports, and are a call for spiritual awakening. In 2006 Joseph Israel was signed to New Door Records of Universal Music Group, and in 2007 “Gone Are the Days” reached #11 on the Top Reggae album charts.
In 2008 Israel released download-only EP ‘Teach Your Children”, Restore Humanity. “It was a lot of fun to make”, says Joseph of the sessions. “I was able to record some great songs, while helping to bring awareness to the Restore Humanity organization”. Restore Humanity is a 501{c} {3} non-profit charitable outfit founded by Sarah Fennel, Joseph’s sister. The program aids and assists the needs of oppressed and poverty-stricken families around the world.
Straight from the press is Israel’s latest single CD “Soulution” with an acoustic version of the single and the roots tracks “All About (the good vibes) and “Put the guns away”. Hear the new music online at www.myspace.com/josephisrael and get your download at iTunes.
“This music is like a tree planted by the river of water that brings forth fruit in due season – fruits of Joy, Hope, Unity and Healing. I look forward to the day that the Earth will be restored, no more war, suffering or strife, only LIFE! I realized instead of just talking about these things I could share them through song and really have a positive effect. This message is healing people all over”. J. Israel
Shalom.

MOSAIC FOUNDATION:

|
 |
Mosaic Foundation is a nine-piece roots reggae band hailing from Rochester, NY. Soul sister front woman, Eva Bless, blasts powerful political lyrics with three-horn harmonies (Matt Walden on trumpet, Jon Lourette on saxophone, and Tim Shneier on trombone) and the tightest rhythm section in town. With their original tunes, Mosaic Foundation sweetly rocks the house and the body. Alternating between songs like “We Stand Strong” that send political messages and easy love songs like “Long Way Home,” the band provides a range of material in a single set.
Mosaic Foundation is held down by the strong drum beats of John-Paul Nawn (who also plays in Ithaca with Kevin Kinsella and David "Solid" Gould & the Temple Rockers) and the booming bass of Ben “Steady” Panepento. Ken Luk, a student at Eastman School of Music, plays rhythm guitar and melodica while Mike Corey, one of the band’s founding members, takes the lead on guitar and has a hand in writing the original music and lyrics. Ekwem Bogmis hits the bubble on the keys and has recently joined in the composition of some new tunes.
Mosaic Foundation has opened for world renowned reggae artists Toots and the Maytals, Rebelution, Passafire & local favorites The Po’Boys Brass Band & Thousands of One.
Upcoming shows scheduled with John Brown's Body, J-san & the Analogue Sons and The Buddhahood.
