THE FIRST EPISODE OF NICHOLAS Da SILVA'S GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES: DREAD AND ALIVE FEATURING DREW MCINTOSH JAMAICAN SUPER HERO
Editor's note: We are pleased to publish Dread & Alive....A graphic novel series about Jamaican Super Hero...
Andrew “Drew” McIntosh is an anthropologist and adventurer. Born in Kingston, Jamaica and raised in the Cockpit Country, he is a descendant of the Jamaican Maroons. Drew possesses a sacred amulet with untold power. Given to him by Cudjoe, the wise and benevolent village chief of the Maroons. Drew has sworn an oath to guard and protect the amulet from his nemesis, the nefarious ShadowCatcher, a powerful Obeahman mastered in the dark arts of Obeah who just happens to be Cudjoe’s brother.

Drew and his girlfriend, Zoologist, Brandy Savage, traverse the planet working to protect the rights of all living things - humans, animals, and the Earth, from the evils of the world.
INTRODUCTION:

JAMAICA
On the small island of Jamaica, in the heart of the forbidden Cockpit Country, there once lived in isolation a tribe of free-spirited people. Feared and respected for their intricate systems of guerrilla warfare and their rebellious independence, the Jamaican Maroons resisted all those who tried to tame them and bring them into submission. They lived off the land and nurtured their culture among their young. Through years of the threat of enslavement and elimination, the Jamaican Maroons developed an inherent distrust of outsiders ‑— with one exception...

Twilight – Cockpit Country
On the outskirts of Montego Bay, in the wildest heights of Jamaica, a sign was erected where an unpaved country road ended. It warned visitors of the entrance to a dark and mysterious place, an unforgiving paradise known as the forbidden Cockpit Country. To the Islanders, its reputation was foreboding, a strange and virtually uninhabited area replete with undergound caves, sinkholes of unknown depths, razor sharp rocks, overgrown foliage and a melange of indigenous flora and fauna. No roads penetrated this region and much of the terrain looked the same, making it very easy for one to become hopelessly lost. The sign, a rough structure made of dogwood, had several planks listing names of eerie towns surrounding this mysterious area; to the east were the towns of Burnt Hill, Kinloss, Wait-A-Bit, and Barbecue Bottom; to the south, Quick Step in the District of Look Behind in the Land of Yu No Call Mi No Come, and to the north, the town of Good Hope.

Beyond the entrance, a narrow footpath wound through dense, tropical foliage, half-hidden by thin mist that gradually thickened as the night progressed. Only faint dapples of light from the full moon penetrated through the thick foliage, creating eerie shadows along the footpath. The air, cool and damp, was caused by an undertaker’s breeze that passed through the dripping branches and twisted pines, blowing back to the sea. And the only sound came from the chatter of animals thrashing about in the underbrush. The footpath continued through the impenetrable undergrowth until the mist parted and an opening in the brush revealed the small mountain village of Accompong, the stronghold of the free-spirited Jamaican Maroons.

In an open area surrounded by straw-thatched huts, a small group of men gathered near a campfire. At the head of the group was Cudjoe, the wise and benevolent village chief of the Jamaican Maroons. He was also the Myalman of the village.

Dressed in a lion skin cloak, and wearing a beard and long, natty dreadlocks, he presented a dour picture, indeed. Around his neck he wore an amulet bearing the symbol of the Conquering Lion of Judah. Three other men, much older than Cudjoe, completed the group. Clad in thick, dark robes that covered them from shoulders to ankles, the men conversed amongst each other until they were silenced by their leader. The elder tribesmen remained silent as Cudjoe spoke.

CHEF MAYRA'S: HOW TO ROAST GARLIC
When garlic is roasted, its sharp flavor is transformed into a richer, mellower, almost sweeter version of its former self. The firm, spicy cloves caramelize and soften, creating a spreadable concoction like no other. Freshly roasted garlic makes a delicious spread for crusty bread or use it to add kick to sauces, mashed potatoes or pretty much anything else you want to taste great.

Here’s how you do it:
First, preheat your oven to 350°F.
Slice off the top ¾-inch (guesstimate – this is not meant to be an exact measurement, just a guideline) of a head of garlic. Place the garlic on a piece of foil and drizzle it with about a tablespoon of olive oil.
You’ll be able to squeeze the garlic right out!
Wrap it tightly and pop the package into your oven until it’s soft to the touch, about 45 minutes to an hour. The garlic should be soft and offer almost no resistance when you give it a quick squeeze (quick because it will be piping hot). Take it out of the oven and let it sit until it’s cool enough to handle. You’ll be able to squeeze the creamy, garlicky goodness right out of the papery skins to use as you please.

JULIAN MARLEY BRINGS AWAKE TOUR TO MIAMI
source: sfltimes Written by RENEE MICHELLE HARRIS
Carrying on their father’s tradition of touching humanity with music, Julian Marley and his brothers will conclude the domestic leg of their “Awake” promotional tour in Miami.
Performing on Sunday, Nov. 22 at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, Julian Marley and his brothers, Stephen and Damian “Jr. Gong” will join newcomer, up-and-coming international reggae artist Javaughn, who will open for the famous Marley clan. “As Julian Marley says, ‘Music is the universal sound that bridges all barriers of language, culture and color,’ and we couldn’t agree more,” said M. John Richard, president and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center.  “To have this talented family sharing our stage not only brings our diverse South Florida community together for a night of mind-bending soulful music, but also celebrates the heritage of the rich Marley name,” Richard said.
That rich Marley name stems, of course, from the world renowned reggae artist who even in death remains a strong family patriarch, the late Robert “Bob” Marley.
In a telephone interview from Colorado, Julian Marley told the South Florida Times that his father’s presence in his music is unmistakable; his presence in his life is palpable.

“My father is my teacher,” said Julian, 34, the tenth of the elder Marley’s 13 birth and adopted children.
Julian said his father’s message of justice, equality and social awareness is still very relevant and a driving force behind how he lives.
Asked to explain the impact of spirituality in his music, Julian said, “Music is vibration and spirituality is the main ingredient. Then again, I’m Rasta, meaning I’m spiritually inclined.”
Recorded in Miami and Jamaica, the Awake CD was released in May and features strong reggae beats infused with hip-hop and socially conscious lyrics.
The title song says, “When will we wake, we’ve got to wake. For many years, the prophets have spoken but will we hear?... And still, we can’t find no peace of mind. When will we wake? We’ve got to wake… We’ve fought so many battles, for whom. Yet our minds remain in shackles. Open up your eyes and you will see.”
Marley said the tour, which kicked off on Nov. 3 in Salt Lake City, Utah, has been well received. His third studio release, Awake was preceded by Lion in the Morning, released in 1996 and A Time and Place, released in 2003.
If he wasn’t carrying on the Marley musical tradition, Julian said that he would still be involved with writing somehow, though he’d find using the written word without music daunting.
“You can hide behind the music,” he chuckled. Of the songwriting process, he said that frequently the melody comes first, however; “sometimes the music and the melody come together.”
During a “Giving Thanks With The Marleys” initiative, The Ghetto Youths Foundations is asking attendees to bring non-perishable canned goods to the event. These donations will be given to CHARLEE (Children Have All Rights: Legal, Educational and Emotional) Homes for Children to help feed over 170 young adults who have aged out of foster care, and to provide food for families in need during the Thanksgiving holiday.
WHAT: Julian Marley and the Uprising Concert
WHEN: Sunday, Nov. 22 at 8 p.m.
WHERE: Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, 1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami.
Price: $24.50 to $44.50. Tickets can be purchased through the Adrienne Arsht Center box office at 305-949-6722 or online at www.arshtcenter.org

BOB MARLEY'S IMAGE DEFENDED
By Waheedan Jariwalla     source:lawdit.co.uk
The descendents of the Jamaican legend Bob Marley are seeking to enforce their exclusive rights to an image that has grown steadily since the reggae legend died of brain cancer in 1981 at the age of 36.
The Marley name, look and sound reportedly generate about $600m a year in sales of unlicensed wares. According to Forbes Magazine, legal sales are in the much smaller figure of $4m.
The family has hired a Canadian firm to protect its rights to the brand.
The intention is to cut out street vendors, who peddle Marley's image on everything from coffee mugs to towels, and create a new line of products dubbed "House of Marley" with vigorous policing of the brand.

Richest dead celebrity: Bob Marley

A deal with the music superstar's estate is set to generate more than $1 billion in worldwide annual sales by 2012.

CNNMoney.com
By Erik Heinrich, contributor

bob_marley.03.jpg
TORONTO (Fortune) -- Is reggae superstar Bob Marley bigger than Jesus? That's debatable, but the music legend who died 28 years ago is about to challenge Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson for the title of richest dead celebrity.

Toronto-based private-equity firm Hilco Consumer Capital has struck a management deal with the Marley estate, which is expected to generate worldwide annual sales in excess of $1 billion by 2012. That seems like a huge number, but by some estimates the Marley name, sound, and image already generate as much as $600 million in pirated merchandise.

"Marley is a strong global brand," says Mickey Goodman, a professional marketer and professor at New York University's Stern School of Business. "He enjoys a high level of awareness, and people feel positive about his music."

Major licensing agreements for the Marley brand are about to be launched in two key areas: consumer electronics -- including headphones, docking stations, and speakers -- and health care, which will likely feature skin-care products and herbal supplements. Also in the works, according to Hilco, are deals for a Marley-branded calming beverage, a video game similar to Guitar Hero featuring Marley's songs, and a chain of restaurants celebrating the music superstar.

Could this be commercial overkill for the Rastafarian whose spiritual songs about social injustice, hope, and redemption have become anthems for billions of fans, from Marrakech to Tokyo, and will it alienate them?

"This is not just about money," says Jamie Salter, Hilco's chief executive. "We have to believe in the people and products we partner with." Salter adds that the Marley estate will have final say on all business ventures, and that charities will figure into the overall mix of Marley branding.

Licensing of dead celebrities is an industry that has exploded in the last decade, thanks in large part to the proliferation of websites and blogs devoted to their memory. Typically, an estate receives 10% to 15% of gross proceeds from a licensing deal, which in this case will be divided between Hilco and the Marley family.

The artist who created such reggae hits as "One Love," "No Woman, No Cry," and "I Shot the Sheriff" fathered a total of 13 children, some out of wedlock, and it's not clear how many are included in the estate. Salter declined to explain how proceeds will be divided between his management company -- which also has an equity stake in a number of high-profile brands, including Polaroid, Sharper Image, and fashion label Halston -- and the Marleys.

However, at a conservative 10%, licensing fees from $1 billion in annual sales should pull in about $100 million for Hilco and the Marleys. That tops the latest figures reported for Presley ($55 million), John Lennon ($15 million), and Jimi Hendrix ($8 million).

Michael Jackson -- who is worth more dead than alive with an estimated $90 million in earnings in the last 12 months -- appears to be Marley's nearest rival for the richest-dead-celebrity crown. However, much of Jackson's reversal of fortune is due to a sharp spike in the sales of his albums and merchandise in the weeks following his death, as well as the one-time success of "This Is It," a film documenting rehearsals for shows he never performed at London's O2 arena.

But the danger of operating the Marley marketing machine in overdrive is that it could irreparably harm the natural mystic's image. Some brand experts now view Elvis as more of a caricature than icon as a result of overexposure.

For Sanjay Sood, director of the Entertainment & Media Management Institute at UCLA, there's one question to ask: If Marley were alive today, would he want his name associated with a particular product? "A lot of artists would say 'no,'" says Sood. "Otherwise, they would have done it when they were alive."

Presley's estate, which is managed by New York-based CKX, launched a line of clothing that turned out to be a bust. (CKX also controls the Muhammad Ali brand and has an equity stake in the company that produces the "American Idol" television show.)

More recently, Lennon's widow Yoko Ono has licensed her husband's song "Real Love" to be used by JC Penny (JCP, Fortune 500) in television ads, and she's given Ben & Jerry's ice cream permission to release a Lennon-inspired flavor called "Imagine Whirled Peace."

Salter of Hilco says the Marley brand has a long way to go before reaching saturation, noting he also considered doing business with the Dean Martin, Marilyn Monroe, and Jimi Hendrix estates, but settled on the Rastafarian from Trench Town, Jamaica, because that's where he says he saw the biggest potential.

There has never been a better time, it seems, to be a dead celebrity -- or perhaps, more precisely, the heir to a dead celebrity's name.

MOSAIC FOUNDATION : : Mosaic Foundation
Mosaic Foundation is a nine-piece roots reggae band hailing from Rochester, NY. Soul sister front woman, Eva Bless, blasts powerful political lyrics with three-horn harmonies (Matt Walden on trumpet, Jon Lourette on saxophone, and Tim Shneier on trombone) and the tightest rhythm section in town. With their original tunes, Mosaic Foundation sweetly rocks the house and the body. Alternating between songs like “We Stand Strong” that send political messages and easy love songs like “Long Way Home,” the band provides a range of material in a single set.
Mosaic Foundation is held down by the strong drum beats of John-Paul Nawn (who also plays in Ithaca with Kevin Kinsella and David "Solid" Gould & the Temple Rockers) and the booming bass of Ben “Steady” Panepento. Ken Luk, a student at Eastman School of Music, plays rhythm guitar and melodica while Mike Corey, one of the band’s founding members, takes the lead on guitar and has a hand in writing the original music and lyrics. Ekwem Bogmis hits the bubble on the keys and has recently joined in the composition of some new tunes.
Mosaic Foundation has opened for world renowned reggae artists Toots and the Maytals, Rebelution, Passafire & local favorites The Po’Boys Brass Band & Thousands of One.  Upcoming shows scheduled with John Brown's Body, J-san & the Analogue Sons and The Buddhahood.

VCX Ft. Soké : : All Night

''All Night'' by VCX Ft. Soké
Recorded in the summer of 2009, this song was inspired by women who wanted a new vibe, a new sound to dance to. It has a dancehall rythm to it and RnB flavored vocals to blend both styles. Very easy listening and positive. The song "All night" is produced by Soké (www.sokemusic.com ) and represents the first single of the ENYO album by VCX (www.myspace.com/vcx07 ). As soon as it started playing in local clubs and radio, people requested a video for the song. So they decided to please the entourage. The video was shot in August 2009 in a high class club with professional dancers, models and of course, ballers with expensive bottles. It's produced by Jesse Ayigah and directed / edited by Justin Augustin. The video is now available on youtube.com or on the artists' websites.
Make sure to watch out for VCX's album entitled "ENYO" produced by Soké soon to be released in 2010.

Serenity Prayer
God, give us grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other.
Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did,
This sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it,
Trusting that You will make all things right,
If I surrender to Your will,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next.
Amen.
