THE SECOND EPISODE OF NICHOLAS Da SILVA'S GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES 'DREAD AND ALIVE' FEATURING DREW MCINTOSH: JAMAICAN SUPER HERO
Editor's note:  Dread & Alive....A graphic novel series about Jamaican Super Hero Drew McIntosh. If you missed the first installment, click here to read:

Dread & Alive (continued)

“There is an evil that lurks in the rain forest,” Cudjoe warned, his voice almost a growl. “I have felt its presence for sometime now.”

“What evil do you speak of? Are you sure this … evil exists?” Quashie, the eldest of the tribesmen asked.

“It is Quaco. I’m afraid that he has become a threat to us.”

“What are you saying?” Quamin asked.

“Quaco has continued to abuse the spiritual powers that have protected us from our enemies for centuries. I believe that he is now possessed with the spirit of Obeah.”

“It was your decision to cast him out of the village,” Quao said attempting to embarrass Cudjoe.

“Yes, that is true. And I stand by that decision.” The voice rose to a threatening timbre. “Need I remind you that punishment for abusing the spiritual powers is exile.”

The others cowered in fear. “Exile,” they chanted together.

“You’ve made your point,” Quao spoke, nodding his head. “Continue.”

“I fear that Quaco is plotting something evil against us.” “What makes you sure of this?” Quashie asked.

“There has been a number of unexplained deaths in the village, some of them horrific in nature. There has also been a slow depletion of our resources. I believe this is Quaco’s doing so that he may weaken us, make us vulnerable.”

“Why is he doing this?” Quamin asked. “What does he want, revenge?”

“He wants this,” Cudjoe stroked the amulet around his neck. “He wants to rule the Cockpit Country alone.”

“If what you say is true, then we must protect the amulet. He must never get possession of it.” Quashie said, a sense of great urgency in his voice.

Cudjoe nodded his head, slowly. “That is why we must act now. If he’s allowed to continue his evil ways, every living thing in the rain forest will die, including us.”

The three men huddled together, talking rapidly, seeking the truth of action. Then, Quashie spoke once more.  “What can we do to stop him?”

“For now, we must prepare our young warriors. I will then choose the individual worthy of successor to the amulet.”  “And in the meantime?”

Sensing movement in the brush, Cudjoe rose to his feet. He turned away from the men and looked out into the darkness. He could make out the faint image of eyes, beady eyes staring back at him through the thick foliage.  “I will seek the help of a friend,” he continued, his back still to the men. “A man named Philip McIntosh. He will be able to help us with some of our problems.”

“You know how we feel about outsiders.”  Cudjoe whirled around, his eyes glowing in the semi-darkness.

“He is one of us.”

“Very well.” Quashie gave under the sharp stare.

The three men returned to the huddle, conversing amongst themselves about the fate that awaited them. Cudjoe, however, left them to stare out into the darkness. Somewhere in the darkness were the answers he sought.  “We will survive,” he thought. “We must survive.”

To be continued next week …

HOT 102 FM Survey Decides On Dancehall
The dust has now settled and based on the survey conducted by Richie B on The Hot Mix programme on Hot 102 FM on Thursday Nov.26 in the ongoing debate of Gaza vs Gully, Kartel took home the winning prize, defeating Mavado by 28 votes to 22 votes.... This was Richie B's way of 'testing the temperature of current day Dance Hall' and it proved to be extremely exciting.....'you could hear the passion in the voices of the callers as they shouted Gaza or Gully respectively, but in an atmosphere of cordiality...many of them taking time to even pay respect to the side that they did not support, to call for peace between the camps and an end to the hostilities that the fans have been meeting out to each other, especially within the schools. The programme was relayed all over New York City via Vibe One Radio and our regular internet listeners from all over the world (www.hot102.fm) had a field day...Calls/votes came in from many of these listeners, especially in Toronto and many parts of the United States.

Over 60 hit songs from both camps were played in the tune for tune showdown and the listeners were treated to edited 'closing arguments' from Kartel's and Mavado's 'lawyers' as they appear on the Twins of Twins CD, Trial and Crosses....Many listeners commented on how exhilarating that was. It was the intention of the host of the programme to 'put some fun back into the Gaza and Gully debate, using the medium of music and that was achieved...we also wanted to get the endorsement of the supporters of both crews to pledge an end to hostilities and to echo, in their own way, the call for peace, love and respect for each other and that was achieved also. We feel that if the wider society would embrace those sentiments, we could very well be on our way to a more amicable existence of the Gully and Gaza phenomenon within our music'. Next time, we'll have Kartel and Mavado themselves making the call for good sense to prevail amongst their fans.....Keep Listening!!!!

RICHEST DEAD CELEBRITY: BOB MARLEY

A deal with the music superstar's estate is set to generate more than $1 billion in worldwide annual sales by 2012.

CNNMoney.com
By Erik Heinrich, contributor

bob_marley.03.jpg
TORONTO (Fortune) -- Is reggae superstar Bob Marley bigger than Jesus? That's debatable, but the music legend who died 28 years ago is about to challenge Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson for the title of richest dead celebrity.

Toronto-based private-equity firm Hilco Consumer Capital has struck a management deal with the Marley estate, which is expected to generate worldwide annual sales in excess of $1 billion by 2012. That seems like a huge number, but by some estimates the Marley name, sound, and image already generate as much as $600 million in pirated merchandise.

"Marley is a strong global brand," says Mickey Goodman, a professional marketer and professor at New York University's Stern School of Business. "He enjoys a high level of awareness, and people feel positive about his music."

Major licensing agreements for the Marley brand are about to be launched in two key areas: consumer electronics -- including headphones, docking stations, and speakers -- and health care, which will likely feature skin-care products and herbal supplements. Also in the works, according to Hilco, are deals for a Marley-branded calming beverage, a video game similar to Guitar Hero featuring Marley's songs, and a chain of restaurants celebrating the music superstar.

Could this be commercial overkill for the Rastafarian whose spiritual songs about social injustice, hope, and redemption have become anthems for billions of fans, from Marrakech to Tokyo, and will it alienate them?

"This is not just about money," says Jamie Salter, Hilco's chief executive. "We have to believe in the people and products we partner with." Salter adds that the Marley estate will have final say on all business ventures, and that charities will figure into the overall mix of Marley branding.

Licensing of dead celebrities is an industry that has exploded in the last decade, thanks in large part to the proliferation of websites and blogs devoted to their memory. Typically, an estate receives 10% to 15% of gross proceeds from a licensing deal, which in this case will be divided between Hilco and the Marley family.

The artist who created such reggae hits as "One Love," "No Woman, No Cry," and "I Shot the Sheriff" fathered a total of 13 children, some out of wedlock, and it's not clear how many are included in the estate. Salter declined to explain how proceeds will be divided between his management company -- which also has an equity stake in a number of high-profile brands, including Polaroid, Sharper Image, and fashion label Halston -- and the Marleys.

However, at a conservative 10%, licensing fees from $1 billion in annual sales should pull in about $100 million for Hilco and the Marleys. That tops the latest figures reported for Presley ($55 million), John Lennon ($15 million), and Jimi Hendrix ($8 million).

Michael Jackson -- who is worth more dead than alive with an estimated $90 million in earnings in the last 12 months -- appears to be Marley's nearest rival for the richest-dead-celebrity crown. However, much of Jackson's reversal of fortune is due to a sharp spike in the sales of his albums and merchandise in the weeks following his death, as well as the one-time success of "This Is It," a film documenting rehearsals for shows he never performed at London's O2 arena.

But the danger of operating the Marley marketing machine in overdrive is that it could irreparably harm the natural mystic's image. Some brand experts now view Elvis as more of a caricature than icon as a result of overexposure.

For Sanjay Sood, director of the Entertainment & Media Management Institute at UCLA, there's one question to ask: If Marley were alive today, would he want his name associated with a particular product? "A lot of artists would say 'no,'" says Sood. "Otherwise, they would have done it when they were alive."

Presley's estate, which is managed by New York-based CKX, launched a line of clothing that turned out to be a bust. (CKX also controls the Muhammad Ali brand and has an equity stake in the company that produces the "American Idol" television show.)

More recently, Lennon's widow Yoko Ono has licensed her husband's song "Real Love" to be used by JC Penny (JCP, Fortune 500) in television ads, and she's given Ben & Jerry's ice cream permission to release a Lennon-inspired flavor called "Imagine Whirled Peace."

Salter of Hilco says the Marley brand has a long way to go before reaching saturation, noting he also considered doing business with the Dean Martin, Marilyn Monroe, and Jimi Hendrix estates, but settled on the Rastafarian from Trench Town, Jamaica, because that's where he says he saw the biggest potential.

There has never been a better time, it seems, to be a dead celebrity -- or perhaps, more precisely, the heir to a dead celebrity's name.

About Clinark
Bermuda Born singer songwriter and producer, Clinark, has brought us another quality production with this new cover song, “I'll Be There.” a Jackson 5 classic.
Bermuda is a group of small island in the Atlantic ocean several hundred miles from birth of Reggae in Jamaica, however even though Bermuda remains a British Colony, the most favoured music is predominately reggae, although R&B is having a major impact. Recently we have seen the rise of another Bermudian artist, Collie Budzz. Clinark currently resides in the UK and has formed his own Independent Record Company and Publishers, Nurture Projects Music.

About Adele
Adele Harley was born in the UK. She is an accomplished musician, playing various instruments as well as singing in a variety of bands. Not only is she a singer/songwriter in her own right, she has also toured the world as a session singer, singing and supporting acts such as Corrine Bailey Rae, Betty Wright and numerous others. Heavily influenced by Reggae/ and Lovers Rock as a teenager, it was inevitable she would hook up with local reggae artists and collaborations which lead to her working and debuting in 08 with producers Leroy “Mafia” & Dave“ Fluxy” with the single ` No One` Adele also sings on the R&B to Reggae/Strictly vocals compilations. Her long awaited debut album is to be released in September 09.

Clinark’s Journey to Foreign Album released in the UK in 2009.
Clinark, often compared to Garnett Silk and said to have the stage presence of Bob Marley has recently released together this classic Roots, Culture and Lovers Rock album ‘Journey to Foreign’. He collaborates on some of the songs with Richie Spice, Luciano, Maxi Priest, Kofi, Brinsley Forde (Aswad) and Irie Love, Troy Anthony, Fantan Mojah, Gramps & Peetah Morgan. Clinark said 'Wow, it’s been a great 4 year struggle to bring the album out, Mafia & Fluxy and Dillie at Stingray Recording Studio, helped me to produce something so amazing, with all the musicians and artists that believed in me and worked on the project, I feel that they really understood my work and brought it out at its best.

The official video for the lead track of the album, ‘Life in the Ghetto’ is featured on You Tube and on rotation on Tempo TV and various network channels around the world and the Video ‘Life in the Ghetto ft Gramps & Peetah Morgan reached no 5 on Suzie Q’s Reggae Top Ten, Video Alley.

Nesbeth:
Blessed with a good voice and a passion for music, dancehall artiste Nesbeth is determined to make his mark in the dancehall arena. So far he is off to a great start as his songs are now permeating the airwaves and earning huge forwards whenever he sings them on stage. Boardhouse and Guns Out are really creating a storm right now…but for Nesbeth, that is just the beginning as he sets his sights on higher heights in the biz.

Born Greg Nesbeth and raised in humble upbringings, he was forced to leave his Arnett Gardens home to live with relatives in Waterhouse due to economic hardships and then Maxfield. Each move meant a new school and more hardship.

Despite the lack of stability in his family life, Greg was able to find and maintain an interest in music. He was encouraged by his friends to take music seriously as a career choice. In 1992, Greg assumed the stage name Nesbeth and made his debut performance at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre. He was well received at that event.

Nesbeth recorded his first single 'Reflection Of Love'  with singer Camera in 1993, kick starting his professional career. He has recorded songs for labels such as Jack Scorpio, King Jammy’s, Down Sound Record, Shocking Vibes Production.

His music covers a broad spectrum of subject areas, but he admits that those which address adversity are closest to his heart. This is evident in tracks like 'Board House ’Guns Out ’So Let It Be and Weight of the world .

Nesbeth has performed extensively, making appearances at a number of stage shows across the island, including Sumfest, Bob Marley Birthday Bash, Sting’ Reble Salute’Western Conciousness and Teen Splash. and he has also perform overseas in U .S.A’ Antigua’ St Kitts  and Grenada. Nesbeth’s break came when a friend introduced him to well known music producer Flava in February 2007. Flava who has a keen ear for talent, wasted no time in taking him under his umbrella, recording the singles Boardhouse, Guns Out, Friend Killa, Injustice and Baby Mother.

The singjay is determined to use his talent to spread positive messages in the dancehall and hope he will help in steering youths in the right direction.
Looking ahead Nesbeth is currently working on new materials to unleash on the dancehall loving public.

Greetings to the Natural World.

The People

Today we have gathered and we see that the cycles of life continue. We have been given the duty to live in balance and harmony with each other and all living things. So now, we bring our minds together as one as we give greetings and thanks to each other as people.

Now our minds are one.

The Earth Mother

We are all thankful to our Mother, the Earth, for she gives us all that we need for life. She supports our feet as we walk about upon her. It gives us joy that she continues to care for us as she has from the beginning of time. To our mother, we send greetings and thanks.

Now our minds are one.

The Waters

We give thanks to all the waters of the world for quenching our thirst and providing us with strength. Water is life. We know its power in many forms-waterfalls and rain, mists and streams, rivers and oceans. With one mind, we send greetings and thanks to the spirit of Water.

Now our minds are one.

The Fish

We turn our minds to the all the Fish life in the water. They were instructed to cleanse and purify the water. They also give themselves to us as food. We are grateful that we can still find pure water. So, we turn now to the Fish and send our greetings and thanks.

Now our minds are one.

The Plants

Now we turn toward the vast fields of Plant life. As far as the eye can see, the Plants grow, working many wonders. They sustain many life forms. With our minds gathered together, we give thanks and look forward to seeing Plant life for many generations to come.

Now our minds are one.

The Food Plants

With one mind, we turn to honor and thank all the Food Plants we harvest from the garden. Since the beginning of time, the grains, vegetables, beans and berries have helped the people survive. Many other living things draw strength from them too. We gather all the Plant Foods together as one and send them a greeting of thanks.

Now our minds are one.

The Medicine Herbs

Now we turn to all the Medicine herbs of the world. From the beginning they were instructed to take away sickness. They are always waiting and ready to heal us. We are happy there are still among us those special few who remember how to use these plants for healing. With one mind, we send greetings and thanks to the Medicines and to the keepers of the Medicines.

Now our minds are one.

The Animals

We gather our minds together to send greetings and thanks to all the Animal life in the world. They have many things to teach us as people. We are honored by them when they give up their lives so we may use their bodies as food for our people. We see them near our homes and in the deep forests. We are glad they are still here and we hope that it will always be so.

Now our minds are one.

The Trees

We now turn our thoughts to the Trees. The Earth has many families of Trees who have their own instructions and uses. Some provide us with shelter and shade, others with fruit, beauty and other useful things. Many people of the world use a Tree as a symbol of peace and strength. With one mind, we greet and thank the Tree life.

Now our minds are one.

The Birds

We put our minds together as one and thank all the Birds who move and fly about over our heads. The Creator gave them beautiful songs. Each day they remind us to enjoy and appreciate life. The Eagle was chosen to be their leader. To all the Birds-from the smallest to the largest-we send our joyful greetings and thanks.

Now our minds are one.

The Four Winds

We are all thankful to the powers we know as the Four Winds. We hear their voices in the moving air as they refresh us and purify the air we breathe. They help us to bring the change of seasons. From the four directions they come, bringing us messages and giving us strength. With one mind, we send our greetings and thanks to the Four Winds.

Now our minds are one.

The Thunderers

Now we turn to the west where our grandfathers, the Thunder Beings, live. With lightning and thundering voices, they bring with them the water that renews life. We are thankful that they keep those evil things made by Okwiseres underground. We bring our minds together as one to send greetings and thanks to our Grandfathers, the Thunderers.

Now our minds are one.

The Sun

We now send greetings and thanks to our eldest Brother, the Sun. Each day without fail he travels the sky from east to west, bringing the light of a new day. He is the source of all the fires of life. With one mind, we send greetings and thanks to our Brother, the Sun.

Now our minds are one.

Grandmother Moon

We put our minds together to give thanks to our oldest Grandmother, the Moon, who lights the night-time sky. She is the leader of woman all over the world, and she governs the movement of the ocean tides. By her changing face we measure time, and it is the Moon who watches over the arrival of children here on Earth. With one mind, we send greetings and thanks to our Grandmother, the Moon.

Now our minds are one.

The Stars

We give thanks to the Stars who are spread across the sky like jewelry. We see them in the night, helping the Moon to light the darkness and bringing dew to the gardens and growing things. When we travel at night, they guide us home. With our minds gathered together as one, we send greetings and thanks to the Stars.

Now our minds are one.

The Enlightened Teachers

We gather our minds to greet and thank the enlightened Teachers who have come to help throughout the ages. When we forget how to live in harmony, they remind us of the way we were instructed to live as people. With one mind, we send greetings and thanks to these caring teachers.

Now our minds are one.

The Creator

Now we turn our thoughts to the creator, or Great Spirit, and send greetings and thanks for all the gifts of Creation. Everything we need to live a good life is here on this Mother Earth. For all the love that is still around us, we gather our minds together as one and send our choicest words of greetings and thanks to the Creator.

Now our minds are one.

Closing Words

We have now arrived at the place where we end our words. Of all the things we have named, it was not our intention to leave anything out. If something was forgotten, we leave it to each individual to send such greetings and thanks in their own way.

Now our minds are one.
