NEW BOOK BY REGGAE AFICIONADO, CHUCK FOSTER - ‘SMALL AXE GUIDE TO ROCK STEADY’ - NOW AVAILABLE
Although there have now been many books devoted to reggae, Chuck Foster’s ‘Small Axe Guide To Rock Steady’ is the first book that deals entirely with Jamaican music in the period between Ska and reggae. Artists, producers, musicians and songs are treated and a thorough discography covers period releases and later compilations.

Chuck Foster has written the Reggae Update column for Beat Magazine for over two decades and hosts Reggae Central on KPFK in LA. He also writes the Readings and Reasoning column for Reggae Festival Guide. His first book, ‘Roots Rock Reggae: An Oral History of Reggae Music From Ska To Dancehall,’ was published by Billboard Books in 1999. He has written about Jamaican music for over twenty-five years.

‘Small Axe Guide To Rock Steady’ is filled with photos and information about the artists, musicians and producers who created the music that laid the foundation for reggae and puts the focus on one of the best-loved periods of Jamaican music.

THE THIRD EPISODE OF NICHOLAS Da SILVA'S GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES 'DREAD AND ALIVE' FEATURING DREW MCINTOSH: JAMAICAN SUPER HERO
Dread & Alive (continued)

part three:
On the other side of Accompong, a young Maroon warrior moved quickly along a beaten footpath, pushing through thick vines and dangling branches while weaving in and out of a recurring mist that concealed the night. He was ten years old, stood about four and a half feet tall, was barrel-chested and wore a trance-like expression on his face. Dressed in loin cloths, he had a small leather pouch attached to his quiver and a bow and arrow over his shoulder. His name was Cuffee, the Maroon day-name for a male born on Friday.
Dashing along the footpath, he paused now and then to listen to the chatter of animals lurking in the rain forest. He moved again, avoiding a Jamaican Boa that was wrapped around an overhanging branch. Soaked in sweat and adrenaline flowing, he continued through the impenetrable growth until he reached the end of the path where the high, yellow moon revealed the mouth of a dark cave, the inconspicuous opening to Windsor Cave. He stood in silence at the entrance, taking a deep breath while gazing into the entrance.

He then stepped inside the cave, moving cautiously through the narrow passageway, The floor was covered with bat dung, and water dripped from the ceiling. The stench filled the wet air. As he ventured deeper into the darkness, pushing through cobwebs, his presence startled the inhabitants that dwelled inside -- rat bats -- causing a spectacular mass of them to exit from the cave. Cuffee took cover, crouching close to the ground.

Cuffee, warrior to Quaco, maneuvered slowly through the narrow passageway until it opened into a dimly-lit chamber where, in the distance, a dark figure sat alone on a makeshift throne. Quaco, dark cloak draped over him, raised a gnarled hand, charging Cuffee to approach and kneel before him. Cautiously, Cuffee moved forward, toward the figure whose face was shrouded in a hood that allowed only the eyes to be seen. Quaco was holding his obeah stick, a staff given magical properties through Obeah, a stick Cuffee feared. He crouched on the ground and waited in silence for his master to speak.

“You may rise,” Quaco said, his voice haunting. “What news do you bring me?””
Cuffee raised slowly but his head remained bowed. “It is Cudjoe, master. He has called a meeting with the counsel of the village. He is aware of your intentions, master.” Cuffee said, his head still bowed so he wouldn’t have to look into his master’s eyes.

“Tell me more,” Quaco demanded through a quick intake of breath. The eyes grew dark. “He is preparing the young warriors. He is also seeking the help of an outsider. He is determined to stop you in your attempts to take over the Cockpit Country.”

Quaco, angered by the threatening news, jumped from his throne.  “Does he think he can stop me? He underestimates my powers,” he roared, waving the obeah stick above his head. Two giant steps took Quaco from his throne to stand over the terrified Cuffee. Placing his right hand under the warrior’s chin, he then lifted Cuffee’s face towards him, revealing a trance- like expression of fear.

“Look at me!” Quaco demanded. “He will try to stop me but he will only fail,” Cuffee quivered with fear. “What is it master that I may do to help you?”

Quaco, letting his hand drop so that the warrior’s chin almost touched his chest, returned to his throne. Once seated, he absently caressed the skull fitted at the end of his staff, his long nails scraping against the surface to create a scratching sound that sent shivers along the young warrior’s spine.

“You will take part in the preparation of the warriors.” Quaco grew silent for a moment, but it was a silence that filled space. “I will see to it that you are chosen to wear the amulet. You will then bring the amulet to me.”

 “Yes master.”

“Now go, return to the village.” Quaco ordered. “I will summon for you again when the time is right.”

Cuffee slipped away, quickly disappearing into the cave. Alone, Quaco, now holding his staff directly in front of him, leaned forward to make a staggering prediction.

“Once the amulet is in my possession, I will rule in absolute power over the Cockpit Country,” he continued, “And the world will know me as ShadowCatcher!

To be continued …

Kehv : : Simply Kehv
Kehv, dubbed the Prince of Reggae Soul, stands tall with the release of his official debut album entitled “Simply KEHV.  Released on label Impressionist Music, this debut highlights the different styles of Kehv and displays the naked truth of his versatile vocal ability. Born in the Parish of St. Ann, Jamaica, Kehv is strongly influenced by reggae, but also has a love for R&B. He proclaims his form of artistry as being a blending of the two with an infusion of hip-hop; producing the sound, he and his team call “Reggae Soul.”

The album kicks off with the melodic journey of “Caribbean Sol-Jah”; an introductory groove that may make you wonder if the artist singing is a blood descendent of the original king of reggae Bob Marley. The track borrows from The Wailers original “Soul Rebel,” released in 1970, but modernizes it with today’s new reggae sound reminiscent of Damian and Kymani Marley.

Songs, “Hear U Say” and “Distant Lover”, feature Kehv’s vocals in a familiar lovers rock groove in the tradition of Beres Hammond meets Tony Rebel. These tracks are sure to put you in a mood for romance and love making. Turning up the heat even more, Kehv demonstrates his versatility with soulful R&B cuts “Real Love” and “Love Will Find a Way.”

In the trend of recent roots reggae, Kehv joins the ranks of newer greats like Jah Cure, Chuck Fender and I-Wayne with the tracks “War & Violence,” “Fly Away,” and “Believer.” These tunes carry strong roots rock traditions with a modern style of musical reggae meditation. “R.A.S.T.A Naw Bow” (Righteous Apostle Serving The Almighty) pushes the disk to a full spirit of conscious roots, representing this generation’s cry for justice, with Jah as the anchor. “Conscious Farmer” and “I’ll Keep Trying” continue this vibe while further implementing Kehv’s proclaimed blend of musical genres.

For all music lovers, this CD has all the ingredients to satisfy completely.  Roots rockas will fill up with conscious rhythms, reggae heads will groove, and those who simply love a great vibe will quickly catch the two and four downbeats.  “Simply KEHV does not disappoint.

Carlos Jones And The PLUS Band : : Leave A Trail
The long awaited follow up recording for Carlos Jones & the PLUS is finally ready to hit the streets!

Recorded with the help of Jacob Fader, leader of the Cleveland Afro-Pop group Mifune, who engineered and co-produced the recording, LEAVE A TRAIL is a collection of 12 songs written by Jones in his trademark roots-reggae style, with inspirational messages woven throughout with his warm, compelling voice.

Carlos Jones & the PLUS Band has been one of the top regional draws over the last 5 years, performing at clubs, festivals, and concerts such as Cleveland House of Blues, Midwest Reggae Festival, Springfield (OH) Arts Festival, Nelson’s Ledges Quarry Park, The Tall Ships Festival, and the Kneadmore Reggae Festival.

The group attracts a widely diverse crowd, showing an almost universal demographic appeal. The group’s first release – “Roots With Culture” saw modest success as the song “Torchbearer” was picked up by XM/Sirius Satellite Radio and broadcast to a national audience. The song was also licensed to and included in a college textbook (World Music: A Global Journey/Miller & Shahriari/Routledge Publishing).

Jones also had one of his tracks included in the movie trailer for the recent Matthew McConahey movie, “Surfer Dude.”

Public Property : : Work To Do
Much has been said about Public Property's Midwest origins as a white reggae band hailing from Iowa City, IA.

After three albums, 3 years, and hundreds of gigs, the group no longer need defend itself from sceptics or critics who believe reggae is one color and comes from one place.

Add female vocalists, a ukulele, and lyrics as controversial as Bob Marley himself, it's no wonder this band has risen so quickly in the U.S. reggae and jam scenes as one of the top nationally touring reggae acts. You'd be hard pressed to find a more confrontational and outspoken band that sounds this fun.

Of the people, by the people, and for all the people, Public Property will spread its message across the country in 2009, touring throughout the Midwest and Colorado and stopping at several festivals along the way. The title track of the album, "Work To Do", features a collaborative performance with Toots from Toots and the Maytals.

ITATION RECORDS EXCITED ABOUT NEW RELEASE! CHECK OUT: DELLY RANX!:http://www.itationrecords.co
Itation Records, which recently minted its hit-making status with a 2008 Roots Riddim Of The Year award from United Reggae for its World Go Round riddim, is proud to release its first album featuring Delly Ranx on September 15th. 'Good Profile' features production from Buju Banton, John John, Muzik Factor, Chimney Records, Awful Music Production as well as Itation’s own quality work over 18 dancehall, reggae and dance tracks with hip hop and R&B mixed in for good measure. Guest appearances by Johnny Osbourne, Chico, Fiona, JR and instrumental arrangements from Tune In Crew put Good Profile on a different level among dancehall releases.

Two singles; “Wish Good” and “Ice Cream Love” featuring foundation dancehall artist Johnny Osbourne, are already receiving love everywhere, and the latest single, “Rasta Nah Bow”, will burn the flame even higher! Opening with the hit single, “Wish Good”, on Itation and Tune In Crew’s massive one drop World Go Round riddim, Delly Ranx sets a cool and conscious tone. Also, be sure to check out the video for “Wish Good” produced by Itation, along with Urban Umpires out of Oakland, CA.

Singing to his strengths, along with a skillful mix of creative lyrics and tight production, Delly continues a rootsy poetic flow on “Past The Worst”. Good Profile sees Jamaica’s top deejay, Buju Banton, contribute a pair of sure fire dance hits from the other side of the vocal booth. Buju, the producer, and Delly, the vocalist, first team up on “Murder”. This song carries a serious message, as well as massive bass and pointed percussion, creating a trigger reaction of unrestrained body whining.

On “Pleasure Pain”, produced by Delly, this playful, bright one drop riddim has Delly singing, “just smile when know see me a come/woman you know you caan done”. “Caah Get Me Out” is a straight up dancehall joint displaying Delly’s unsullied street cred. Versatility, however, is crucial and “Working Class” adds a creeping orchestral hip hop mix with entertaining results. Foundation dancehall artist, Johnny Osbourne, adds his stamp of approval to “Ice Cream Love”—a unique smash version of Johnny’s original—which has been burning up the charts all over the world on the shoulders of its heavyweight riddim and Awful Music Production’s Lloyd James Jr.’s nasty production. “Lady Of My Dreams”, “Virgin Wine” (featuring JR), and “Im Going Crazy” (featuring Chico) make sure the ladies are satisfied with just the right lyrics and body moving melodies. Delly takes a spiritual tone on “Rasta Nah Bow”, an Itation production with the indisputable Tune In Crew providing a driving roots riddim that never tires.

The energy doesn’t disappear from track to track as “Do Good” takes a bouncy electro vibe and passes it off to Itation’s Higher Meditation riddim led by Delly’s compelling “Don’t Burn The Fields”. Nothing can dull his shine on “Don’t Choose”, another Tune In/Itation collaboration where the melodic lines ebb and flow in tandem with Delly’s lyrical stream of consciousness. “Hold Me Close” on the Show Love riddim brings Fiona into the mix for a passionate “he said, she said” type of moment. R&B is the order of the day on “Things Friend” where the catchy hooks poke holes in the motives of pretend friends. Hip hop vibes on “World Need Love” and dance floor beats on “Sensi Ride” complete Good Profile with a little something for everybody. It’s a good look for Delly Ranx and promises to be a great listen for reggae and dance fans everywhere!

Song: Wish Good

Blessed are You, O Lord our God, Wellspring of all that is
Blessed are You, O Lord our God,
Wellspring of all that is.

You are the sea on which we float,
You are the wind that fills our sails,
You are the storm that buffets us,
You are the calm that brings us peace.

Open our ears to hear Your word,
Open our eyes to see Your beauty,
Open our hearts to be warmed by Your love.

Free us from our lonely prisons of fear and selfishness,
And make us over, day by day, into bearers of Your peace.
