1. GET ACTIVE:
DOGS: Brave the elements and hit the pavement. Raincoat, sweater, water bottle; grab whatever you need and get out the door for a walk. If the two of you can only take short walks, try taking two a day.
CATS: While you're preparing to exercise spend a couple minutes engaging your cat in activity. Some simple tips to get your cat to move more are:
- Move the food bowl as far away from their favorite haunts as possible.
- Use feather toys, flashlights, paperbags, or balls to engage your cat in activity for 10 minutes twice a day. Experiment and remember that what's exciting today may be boring tomorrow.
- Play fetch, toss their kibbles and combine mealtime with playtime.
2. PORTION CONTROL: Get rid of the self-feeders. Try small meals more frequently for both of you. Don't leave a full bowl out all day for your pet and don't put huge portions on your plate.
3. JUST A FEW TREATS:
When your pet is begging for treats give her a few treats. By a few, try 1-3 not a handful. Same goes for you...try a few M&M's not the whole bag. Remember one dog bone can be as many as 100 extra calories.
4. MORE WATER:
Water is filling and can be enough to curb a craving. Offer fresh water instead of food.
CATS: They love fresh water so when they are eyeing the empty food bowl, fill up the water bowl instead.
DOGS: The more outdoor activity your dog has the more he'll fill up on water.
5. CUDDLE UP:
Do you sit with your pet by your side and snack in the evenings? Embrace new healthy habits with your pet.
CATS: Play, cuddle and chat with your cat instead of snacking.
DOG: Train, walk or play with your dog instead of him waiting for the chips to fall off your lap.
