2010: Inspiration or
Re-solution? By Janet Meredith
Why practice yoga? Why drive in traffic to class? To master handstand presses? To wrap yourself into a pretzel? To hold down dog longer than the person on the mat next to you? Maybe. And, all of that is uber cool and fun.
To quote well known asthangi, Richard Freeman, “On your death bed does it really matter how far you folded in your forward bend?” He says, no. What do you say? I say, Get Your Namaste On. Allow me to offer you another pose. Place your hands together in front of your heart, slightly bow your head and say “Namaste”.
Enter any yoga class and you!re certain to hear “Namaste”. Nama, what? Nama, who? Namaste. In Sanskrit, nama means "bow!, as means "I! and te means "you!. Simply, agreeting that says, “I bow to you”.
Below are several other translations:
- I honor the spirit in you which is also in me.
- I honor the place in you in which the Universe dwells, I honor the place in you which is of love, of integrity, of wisdom and of peace. When you are in that place in you, and I am in that place in me, we are one.
- I salute the God within you.
- Your spirit and my spirit are one.
- That which is of God in me greets that which is of God in you.
- The divinity within me perceives and adores the divinity within you.
- All that is best and highest in me greets/salutes all that is best and highest in you.
- I greet the God within.
- I bow to you. The light within me honors the light within you.
Yoga class can be a catalyst to creating bonds, establishing connections with others, and perhaps developing long term relationships. It is also a great place to begin practicing non judgment of ourselves and others. Next time you!re in class, take a moment to connect with someone you do not know, take a moment to honor yourself and the other person. While our hips may begin to creak and our joints stiffen, one yoga we can all do ... get your namaste on.
Have a blessed 2010!

EQUESTRIAN BODY ROLLING
w/Barbara Hann
1/11-2/1: 4 Sessions, Mondays 1pm
$120 for all 4 sessions, Single session $35 (Pre-registration required)
Are you looking to find balance and harmony with your horse or with your riding? Looking to ride without tension and pain? Addressing areas of pain can be exhausting and expensive, especially when trying to reach your best athletic potential. However, state-of-the-art Yamuna Body Rolling (YBR) techniques can make eliminating stress and restrictions easy by finding length in the body. Changing body misalignment takes body awareness and reprogramming for improvement in riding skills. YBR moves through the top layer to massage muscles. Then, goes deeper to stimulate bones increasing their density and strength maneuvering deep into the intrinsic muscles close to the bones. The most profound part of this work is to mindfully connect the inner muscles and bones to the core. By energizing and strengthening your center, body functions are more balanced and in unison, building a clear body and mind. Hence, achieving equilibrium.
