ROOTS REVEALERS EARLY 2010 TOUR
Reggae artistes Roots Revealers are satisfied with the work they were able to put in on their recent visit to Jamaica.  The duo performed at Reggae artiste Cocoa Tea annual event Jam Jam as well as March Out 2009 and Teen Splash where they felt most rewarded after performing their current single “Sweetie” which features Chaka Demus.

Roots Revealers were invited on stage during Chaka Demus and Pliers performance to do the single at 2:00am and the very huge crowd responded favorably, some people in the audience were seen singing word for word every line of the song while others showed their appreciation with loud cheers.

Chris Mundahl asserts that the trip was indeed a productive one and that both brothers are pleased with the buzz that has been created locally.  “Of course, there is always room for improvement but we are satisfied” stated Josh Mundahl the younger of the two (2) brothers.

Roots Revealers are managed by Family House Music headed by musician Judia Manning of the AbyssinansThe duo plans to release another single from their album in March along with a video.  On their return home in Texas they have a couple of events lined up in Houston to include a performance with Gyptian on January 7th, 2010 and Bob Marley Wear Affair a Dancehall event held annually in Houston where patrons sport only Bob Marley apparel.  Among their list of events is a tour of Europe during the second week of February through to March and a mini US tour where they are expected to play in Florida, Mississippi and Atlanta.

Dread & Alive (continued from last week)

...She expected Philip to answer but there was nothing. Just silence. Filled with sudden dread, she cautiously moved forward. Her heart pounded furiously as she inched toward the kitchen. At that moment, the shadow reappeared but this time it was accompanied by what caused it. Maria gasped and dropped the basket of produce, sending a mango rolling across the floor.

She stood face-to-face with a young African warrior.  He was splendid in stature; a fighter dressed in a loincloth. In his right hand was a quiver and bow. His face was expressionless, silent but curious. Without taking his eyes from Maria, he bent and picked up the fruit that had rolled to a stop by his foot.  He then offered it back to Maria.

"Philip!" Maria called out.  At that moment, the sound of a screen door slamming shut, followed by Philip's voice eased her fear.

“I see you’ve met Cuffee,” Philip smiled, half-heartedly.

Maria sighed then shook her head, rolling her eyes at Philip.  A smile tugged the corner of her lips as she looked at him. He was a slender man, yet muscular for a gentleman in his late thirties. Dressed in khakis similar to Maria's, his wire-frame glasses were in conflict with the long, natty dreadlocks that resembled a lion's mane. A direct descendant of the Jamaican Maroons, Philip used his heritage well in his role of cultural anthropologist.

Nodding her head in a gesture of thanks, Maria accepted the errant mango from Cuffee before crouching on the floor to pick up the remaining fruit. Philip, dodging Cuffee, joined her on the floor.

“Did you know you left the front door open?” Maria asked, her voice tinged with annoyance. “And the phone … it was off the hook. I was worried.”

"I'm sorry."

"You got to be more careful."

"I was on the phone with the university when I heard some noise coming from the backyard.” Philip stopped in mid-sentence to glance around the kitchen and dining room. "Where’s Drew?"

“He’s in the living room sleeping on the couch. Poor boy. He had a busy morning.” “That’s good for him,” Philip said, smiling at his wife.

The two gathered the remainder of the produce and carried it to the counter.
"I hope Cuffee’s presence didn’t frighten you," Philip said, placing his arm on the young warrior’s shoulder.

"Why is he here? Is there something wrong?" Maria asked, softly.

“You could say that.”  Philip approached Maria and placed his arms around her. "I’ll explain later on tonight. Right now, I must get Cuffee back to the edge of the Cockpit Country.  He’s got a long journey ahead of him."

"You promise you’ll tell me everything?"

"Yes, Maria. Everything."  Philip placed a hand gently at the back of her neck and pulled her into a kiss.

Still unsettled, Maria's hand shook as she handed him the keys to the truck. Her nervousness didn't escape Philip but he said nothing as he shoved the keys his coat pocket.  Suddenly, Philip turned, sensing someone standing behind him.  He smiled when he saw it was Drew, rubbing sleep from his eyes with one hand while clutching his blanket with the other.

REBEL SALUTE WELCOMES NEW TALENT
Krista Henry, Staff Reporter - Gleaner

Pepsi-Cola Jamaica will be giving one lucky, upcoming artiste the chance to shine at Rebel Salute 2010, to be held on Saturday, January 16, at the Port Kaiser Sports Club in St Elizabeth, Jamaica, W.I.

The official title sponsor of Rebel Salute, Pepsi will afford aspiring deejays, singers and musicians an opportunity to perform at the reggae festival this year. At the launch of the show last Tuesday at the Hilton Kingston hotel, Pepsi's head of marketing, Denise Dixon, announced that Pepsi will tour four of the island's major towns, with a view to finding local talent to earn a coveted spot on the Rebel Salute line-up.

If the concerts reap success, Pepsi plans to keep on doing them throughout the next three years that they have signed on to sponsor the concert.

Pepsi's brand manager, Ayanna Kirton, told The Sunday Gleaner that the idea was a good way to raise interest, not only in the brand but the show, and to allow persons to interact with Rebel Salute's leading man, veteran singer Tony Rebel, as well as the other performers.

The tour kicked off yesterday at Sugarman's Beach in St Catherine, with auditions. The next stop will be in Sam Sharpe Square, Montego Bay on Friday, January 8 followed by MX3 in Negril also on January 8, with the competition culminating in Junction Square, St. Elizabeth on Saturday, January 9.

According to Kirton, the judges will tentatively be Tony Rebel, a representative from Pepsi and, hopefully, each competition will have a different guest judge from the Rebel Salute line-up of performers.

At the launch, according to a release sent from Pepsi-Cola, Dixon mentioned the positive image of the show, explaining, "Rebel Salute represents what is clean and wholesome. This is what we stand for at Pepsi-Cola. We believe in supporting entertainment that does not offend, particularly in a time when our values are being eroded by so many negative influences."

She added that Pepsi-Cola understands the Rebel Salute vision to showcase the best of reggae and dancehall music and show the world that this is a place of excellent entertainment, good music and great vibes. Dixon also pointed out that on the night of the show Pepsi will show its full range of products, among them Tropicana juice and their Essential water brand.

As such, according to Kirton, they are looking for clean positive acts to go along with the image. She said, "We're looking for an enthusiastic response, it's a good product in terms of the concert, incident-free, upholding a positive perspective." Tony Rebel said at the launch that "The show has always found new talent, so we expect performances based on the calibre of what you'll see from those on the line-up. It's definitely a platform for progressing one's career, an opportunity to shine." At the launch, Rebel noted that people told him the first time they saw Tarrus Riley and Queen Ifrica perform was on a Rebel Salute DVD.

This year's line-up will see a lot of changes in personas from artistes, as there will be performances from Sasco - not Assassin, and the same going for Marion Hall - not Lady Saw, similar to when Beenie Man performed as Ras Moses at a previous Rebel Salute staging.

Also on the line-up are Freddie McGregor, Gramps Morgan, Bugle, Singing Melody, Tarrus Riley, Queen Ifrica, I-Wayne, Jah Mason, Richie Spice, Alaine, Leroy Gibbons, C Sharp, Hezron, Pinchers, Anthony Malvo, I-Octane and others.

CHEF MAYRA'S: YUMMY PESTO PASTA SALAD - VEGAN OF COURSE!
Ingredients
* 1 (12 or 16-ounce) whole wheat package mini-penne or bow-tie pasta
* 1/4 cup pine nuts
* 2 cups fresh basil, firmly packed
* 1/3 cup fresh parsley
* 8 garlic cloves (yes, really – eight - or  more if you like)
* 1/4 cup organic or vegan white wine
* 1 slice roasted or fresh red bell pepper
* Pinch sea salt
* 1/2 - 1 cup olive oil
* 2 cups sliced shiitake mushrooms
* 3/4 cup frozen edamame
* 8 sun-dried tomatoes in oil

In a large pot of boiling water, cook pasta according to package directions. If the pasta is done before you finish making the pesto, toss with a little olive oil and set aside.

* Meanwhile, Toast pine nuts in a toaster  oven or in a pan over the stove for 3-4 minutes, watching not to burn them.

* In a blender or food processor, combine pine nuts, basil, parsley, garlic, wine, bell pepper and salt with 1/2 cup olive oil. Blend. Keep blending and adding olive oil until pesto has reached its desired consistency.

* In a medium pan, saute the mushrooms in a Tablespoon of olive oil until they begin to change color to a light tan, about 4 minutes.

* Put the edamame in a bowl with a few tablespoons of water and microwave for 2 minutes, then drain (If you have your timing down you could just add them to the pasta a few minutes before it is done).

* Slice the sun-dried tomatoes carefully into thin strips (they are slippery).

* Toss everything together in a big bowl and refrigerate.

DISBANDING RAW AND WHAT SHOULD BE DONE WITH RAW'S ASSETS
To REGGAE AMBASSADORS WORLDWIDE MEMBERS:

The Board of Directors of RAW is contemplating disbanding the organization. I am contacting you to get your input regarding this as well as to solicit from you what should be done with the roughly $22,000.00 in RAW assets in the event the organization does decide to be dissolved.

Reggae Ambassadors Worldwide was formed in 1992 by Papa Pilgrim and Rasta Nane whose visions were to increase public awareness and acceptance of Reggae music and to create more and better opportunities for those who make Reggae music possible: the singers and players of instruments, their agents and managers and promoters, their fans and everyone else participating in this unique art form.

RAW has grown to become a non-profit organization that, at one point, had more than 1,500 members. Since the passing of Papa Pilgrim, RAW's activity has waned.

For the past year, there have been several vacancies on RAW's Board of Directors, and there appears to be insufficient interest from the membership in undertaking the activities necessary to keep RAW active and vibrant.

The Board of Directors is considering formally dissolving RAW as a non-profit corporation. Utah law requires that the members approve of any proposal to dissolve RAW as well as to approve of the distribution of RAW's assets upon dissolution.
RAW's assets consist of $21,958.00 in a bank account in addition to some furnishing valued at less than $500.00. The Board is contemplating returning any RAW dues paid since January 1, 2007 (because members never received a complete printed RAWster, new membership or renewed membership packet and therefore not received the benefits of their payment), as well as paying to have the RAW web site maintained online for at least one (1) year following RAW's dissolution.

It is anticipated that, once these obligation have been taken care of, there will be approximately $15,000.00 left over.   Kindly contact me within the next sixty (60) days in order to apprise me as to your feelings regarding the dissolution of RAW, and what you would like to see done with the funds remaining in RAW's bank account. All of the Board Members are inclined to have the funds donated to one or more worthy non-profit organizations that will help forward the reggae vibe, and your input will be most appreciated.

NEW YORK - INITIATIVE FOR BOB MARLEY BLVD TO BE EXTENDED
source: Jared Mccallister www.nydailynews.com

Looking down the commercial Brooklyn thoroughfare and into 2010, members of the West Indian-American Progressive Action Council are planning a bright future of economic revitalization and growth for a stretch of Church Ave. co-named for reggae legend Bob Marley.

WIAPAC, which worked to get the avenue co-named for Marley in 2006, has big plans for the new year. They include the installation of Caribbean flags on the avenue from E. 98th St. to Flatbush Ave., hosting a number of community events, and helping to organize projects with merchants and area residents during June's Caribbean-American Heritage Month.

Michael Russell, president and founder of WIAPAC and a creator of the Marley Blvd. initiative, hopes to enlist the help of local politicians in the economic development push along the commercial strip. He also plans to discuss the extension of the Marley co-naming to an eastern portion of the avenue, from New York Ave. to Remsen Ave., located in the district of newly-elected City Councilman Jumaane Williams.

For information, call Russell at (917) 803-2062, Haynes-Tross at (917) 257-9340 or visit the group's Web site at www.wiapac.org

ON FEBRUARY 16, 2010 GREENSLEEVES RECORDS RELEASES ALBOROSIE’S NEW ALBUM ESCAPE FROM BABYLON TO THE KINGDOM OF ZION
Alborosie is known for his conscious lyrics and sometimes controversial subject matter.  His new album will continue on that vein. Alborosie’s music is heavily influenced by his Rastafarian beliefs. Hailing from Sicily Italy, he moved to Jamaica
to get closer to the Rastafarian culture and the roots of Reggae music. He has been given the stamp of approval by Reggae Legends Sly and Robbie and Freddie McGregor to name a few.

Escape From Babylon To The Kingdom Of Zion features 18 tracks filled with the passion and beliefs that Alborosie lives by. His first single “Stepping Out” features David Hinds from the famed reggae band Steel Pulse. They are informing everyone that the Rasta Man is stepping out and coming to the world.  The track “Money” opens up with the statement of Debt over life and Money over people, the song goes on to describe how Money is the root of all evil. Included on the 2009 One-Drop Anthems album, the successful track “Humbleness” speaks to those that are blinded by the power they possess and treats his fellow man as if they were something less. The smooth rhythm of “One Sound” and warm vocals of Gramps Morgan from Morgan Heritage, makes this feel good track a must listen. Changing gears on an updated version of the classic trailer load of girls riddim from Shabba Ranks is “Blue Movie Boo”

Alborosie continues to let us know who he is and what he’s about on the roots rhythm track “I Rusalem”. From exposing the situations of the oppressed on “Dung A Babylon”, to uplifting women on “Good Woman,” and telling the youth to know their roots on “Promise Land” Alborosie stays true to his sound and  his faith on  the album Escape From Babylon To The Kingdom Of Zion.

His vocal style blends classic and contemporary influences to form a unique and credible sound. His respect for reggae’s heritage is apparent from first listen. Combining tracks from his previous two albums with 5 newly recorded songs, this album serves as an introduction and presents his biggest hits to date.

ANDREW DIAMOND PAYS HIS RESPECTS TO HIS FRIEND
David Isaacs was a good friend who had a tremendous influence on me personally.  I met David when I did a short tour with the Itals in 1995.  He was the person who first invited me to Jamaica, met me at the airport and slept on the sofa while I took the bed of his small house off of Red Hills road; in the daytime we toured all of the studios and all of the important musical spots in Kingston.  We went to Randy’s, Leggo’s, Mixing Lab, Studio One, Dynamic, Sonic Sounds, African Museum, Skateland, everywhere.  When I first started recording in Jamaica, David put me on the phone with the likes of Dwight Pinkney, Flabba Holt, Winston Jarrett and Bongo Herman, all of my musical heroes.  There was no better person than David Isaacs to be on tour with, sure he might put a serious dent in your cologne bottle when you weren’t looking but he was the guy who always kept things light.  Looking for a joke to make on or off stage, in the tour bus or hotel, he always had something up his sleeve to make you laugh.  As an artist and musician he was a true professional.

David Isaacs was a great singer, an important part of Jamaican music and a great friend.  He will be greatly missed.

This Day in Reggae and Nubian, Rasta, herb and related history

January 8
1912: African National Congress (ANC) is founded.

1975: Sean Paul (Sean Paul Henriques) is born in Kingston, Jamaica.

1999: Rohan Marley, son of Bob Marley and common-law husband of Lauryn Hill, is pulled from a burning car by New York police.

Rohan, who was waiting for Lauryn to leave a recording studio, was asleep in
the car when an electrical malfunction started the fire and prevented him from
opening automatic windows and door locks; police broke a window and pulled him
from the vehicle. Rohan was treated at a hospital for smoke inhalation and
released.

KEHV:
SIMPLY KEHV: Debut Album
Kehv, dubbed the Prince of Reggae Soul, stands tall with the release of his official debut album entitled “Simply KEHV.” Released on the label, Impressionist Music, this debut highlights the different styles of Kehv and displays the naked truth of his versatile vocal ability.

In case you haven’t heard of Kehv, then you’ve got some catching up to do. Kehv has been bubbling on the music scene since his earlier recordings in 1995.  Born in the Parish of St. Ann, Jamaica, Kehv is strongly influenced by reggae, but also has a love for R&B. He proclaims his form of artistry as being a blending of the two with an infusion of hip-hop; producing the sound, he and his team call “Reggae Soul.”

Growing up in Jamaica, Kehv’s musical career began at the early age of ten in the church choir. With no formal training, he blossomed from singing to writing or co-writing almost every song and mastered both the guitar and the piano. After migrating to the United States and settling in Miami FL, Kehv recorded his first single "Half Way There" in 1995.  With the demand from his audience for more music highlighting his beautiful vocals and masterful playing skills, Kehv continued to write, perform and release new music every chance he got. On radio stations all over South Florida and Jamaica his latest singles "Distant Lover", "Hear You Say", and “Take This Higher” can now be heard, while some of his other songs are blowing up on internet radio stations here in the United States, and as far as Canada and the UK.

Labeled as an indie artist on Myspace Music, a new artist by Partyspree.com, and a local artist at home in Miami, Kehv has surpassed all of these titles by working with superstars such as Kymani Marley, Wyclef Jean, and Tony Kelly.  He has also shared the stage with international artists such as Beenie Man, Shaggy, Sean Kingston and Derrick Morgan of Morgan Heritage, and has performed on major network stations BET and MTV.

Kehv recently performed, in celebration of the completion of his album, at Miami’s premiere hot spot the Grass Restaurant and Lounge to a packed house. Superstars such as Kymani Marley, radio personality Vanessa James and many others were in attendance to support this talented artist on the rise!

With the release of his debut album Simply KEHV, now available worldwide on all digital outlet stores, Kehv has made available to his fans the music they have been clamoring for. This CD has all the ingredients to satisfy completely all music lovers.  Roots rockas will fill up conscious riddims, reggae heads will rock away, and those who just like good music will quickly catch the two and four downbeats. This “fresh face” on the scene has truly put in the time and effort and Simply KEHV does not and will not disappoint.

According to top40-charts.net, "with his humble demeanor, spiritual awareness, and unquestionable talent, the music fraternity as well as the fans would be wise to take a look at this fresh face coming your way. His name is Kehv. Blessed from birth!"

Stan Evans Smith, of the West Indian Times says “Kehv relates his life experiences through his music…”

Stacy Lee-Williams of Kingleopromotions says "take a listen and you will instantly become a fan."

Please visit Kehv's interactive website at www.myspace.com/kehvmusic for much more information, including mp3's, contact info, full bio, pictures, and performance information.

JAH's Prayer

Oh JAH JAH who is in Zion

IRIE be thy name

JAH kingdom come, JAH will be done In Babylon as it is in Zion

Give us this day our provision

and lead us not into temptation

But deliver us into JAH nation

For Thine is the Iron, Lion, of Zion

ForIver and Iver
