EME AWARDS SET FOR FEBRUARY 4 JAMAICA
|
|
|
Photo: Vybz Kartel about to receive his 'Dj of the Year' Award from Chairman & Founder of the EMEs - Richie B in 2009
This year's staging the Excellence In Music and Entertainment (EME) Awards is set for Thursday February 4, at the Gardens at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, New Kingston. The EME Awards is the brain child of radio personality Richard 'Richie B' Burgess. He created this award show to honour the players in the local music industry, both past and present, for their hard work in creating and maintaining excellence within our rich musical culture. The EME Awards is a non-profit venture.
Since its humble beginnings back in 2005, as a small in studio production, the EME Awards have grown to become one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the local entertainment calendar. The EME Awards has garnered support and popularity through the years and has attracted coverage from both the local and international media. Last year, the presence of America's BETJ Channel, provided quite a boost for the EMEs and their repeat airings of the event has definitely added to the excitement both here and abroad.
Over 85% of the awardees were in attendance for both the 2008 and 2009 staging and the organisers hope to improve on that percentage this year. This is a clear indication of the respect the industry has for this event. 2010 promises to be even bigger and better.

ANTHONY B BRINGS SPIRITUAL AND PROACTIVE REGGAE TO THE IMAGE VIP LOUNGE IN SACRAMENTO, CA ON JANUARY 17
|
|
H.A.S.O. Live Productions presents Reggae dancehall performer Anthony B who will be performing along with Malika Mademana on Sunday, January 17 at Image VIP Lounge at 705 J Street in downtown Sacramento. The venue is for 21 and over. Showtime is at 9pm and $25 tickets can be purchased in advance at www.brownpapertickets.com or at the door.
Draped in the rich colors of African cloth, his trademark staff in hand, and his dreadlocks wrapped regally on his head, Anthony B embodies all that it is spiritual and proactive about Reggae music. This artist has been steadfast in his mission to represent the poor and oppressed, using sharp lyrics to confront political injustices and bring the issues of the people to the forefront. In the process, he has raised the quality of performance standards and lyrical content for the industry, through the release of 10 albums, over 1000 singles and appearances on over 100 albums in the last 15 years.
Anthony B’s musical journey started in the church, back when he was still called Keith Anthony Blair in Clark’s Town, Trelawney. In this part of rural Jamaica, Anthony B was immersed in the thunderous chants and rhythms of Revivalism and the Seventh Day Adventist church where he honed his soon-to-be signature vocals. In his formative years, the artiste also cleaved to the music of Otis Redding and the incomparable Peter Tosh.

THE 8TH EPISODE OF NICHOLAS Da SILVA'S GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES 'DREAD AND ALIVE' FEATURING DREW MCINTOSH: JAMAICAN SUPER HERO
|
|
|
Dread & Alive (continued from last week)
"Hey there, fella. Did we wake you up?"
Drew nodded, still rubbing his eyes as he walked toward his mother to grab hold of her pant leg.
"Drew, I want you to meet someone. Say hello to Cuffee."
Silently, the two boys stared at each other, their expression a mixture of curiosity and uneasiness.
Philip continued, "Cuffee lives in the Cockpit Country. One day I will take you there."
The boys continued to eye each other in silence until Drew flashed a smile. Cuffee returned the gesture with a smile of his own.
"Okay then,” Philip continued, “I must leave now but I’ll be back shortly."
"Just make sure you return by suppertiime. I'm cooking rice and peas and I don’t want to have to keep the pot hot.”
"I’ll be here. You know that’s my favorite," Philip said, giving her a long hug and a kiss on the right cheek. He stared down at Drew, pride showing in his eyes, then patted him on his head before hurrying out the back door with Cuffee.
For dinner, Maria prepared a hearty meal of peppered shrimp and rice and peas; gungo beans mixed with rice, coconut milk and spices. A tossed salad and baked sweet potato completed the meal. As the McIntosh's gathered around the table, there was a feeling of uncertainty in the air. Maria and Philip sat down quietly, neither one bothering to say a word. Drew, sensing that his mother was upset with Philip, quietly took his place at the table. He picked up his fork and began eating his salad first. This was a daily routine for the Islander. He would always eat his least favorite part of his dinner first, saving the best for last. In this case, he quickly consumed the salad and sweet potato, saving the peppered shrimp and rice and peas for last.
Maria glanced over at Drew and smiled, then turned her attention to Philip, still waiting for him to explain Cuffee's presence earlier in the day. Philip too, knew that Maria was upset with him. As he ate eat his dinner, he avoided eye contact with her, hoping to make it through the meal without any confrontation. But it wasn't to be. As he took another bite, Maria broke the silence.
"So … do you want to tell me why Cuffee was here?" Maria asked.
Drew, mouth open and fork poised, looked up at his father, waiting to see what he would say. Surprised, Philip mumbled a reply through a mouth full of food but his eyes never left his plate.
"That’s okay. I can wait but I’m not leaving the table until you tell me," Maria said coldly.
Philip wiped his mouth with the napkin and then stared directly into Maria's eyes. He cleared his throat then wiped his hands with a napkin before folding it and placing it on the table. He leaned back in his chair, folded his arms across his chest, fidgeted a little in his chair, then finally said, "Cuffee has come with a message from Cudjoe."
To be continued …

TONY REBEL MAKES PLEA TO CLEANSE DANCEHALL
|
|
|
|
Event organiser Tony Rebel in a plea to cleanse dancehall of explicit lyrics.
Explicit dancehall, his argument suggested was not marketable in Europe and contributed to poor US sales in 2009.
The top deejays of 2009 were Mavado and Vybz Kartel whose explicit recordings and tribalised fans fuelled the 'gully versus gaza' divide. But Kartel and former mentor Bounty Killer also traded lyrical curses along with Flippa Mafia and Elephant Man. The music remained mainly underground but formed the subtext of poor sales in 2009: A year in which no dancehall artiste sold over 80,000 copies in the US market, according to Soundscan, the sales tracker of music and video products throughout North America. Last week rising deejay Ra Deal defended artistes and blamed record company mismanagement and negative publicity for the decline in the music industry.
Rebel added: "What they love about us, is when them going through hardship and terrible times dem hear 'don't worry about a ting'. That is what they want...don't apologise for endorsing and loving and support the real authentic side of Jamaica music."
International reggae charts continue to be dominated by non Jamaican reggae artistes. For instance iTunes reggae charts in Japan, Germany and New Zealand, on January 1, had only one Jamaican-born artiste -- Bob Marley -- in the top ten, signalling to some pundits that Jamaica is losing influence on reggae.
Top sellers in the US market were Sean Paul's Imperial Blaze (Atlantic Records), Matisyahu's Light (Epic Records) and Reggae Gold (VP Records), which sold some 69,700, 56,700 and 40,000 respectively in North America. Conscious reggae group Morgan Heritage and dancehall producer-turned-singer Serani, made first week sales of 300 and 1,200 units respectively, but were still able to chart on Billboard.
According to Rebel, the line-up of the 2010 staging of Rebel Salute includes the London-based Steel Pulse, Queen Ifrica, Tarrus Riley, Etana, Capleton, Alaine, Marion Hall (aka Lady Saw), Sasco (aka Assassin), Richie Spice, I-Octane, Brown Sugar, Stream, Romain Virgo, Noddy Virtue, Hezron, Bugle, Ras Penco, I-Wayne, Gramps Morgan (from Morgan Heritage), Jah Mason, Stevie Face, Chevaughn and C Sharp, Freddie McGregor, Junior Murvin, Singing Melody, Leroy Gibbons, Daddy U-Roy, Pinchers, Peter Metro, Ronnie Davis of the Itals' fame from which a member David Isaacs died recently, and many others.

BUJU TO MISS GRAMMYS
|
|
|
|
Dancehall star Buju Banton will miss the January 31 Grammy Awards where his latest album, Rasta Got Soul, is one of five nominated for the reggae prize. While the winner is being named, Buju will be in a federal prison where he will stay until his trial in March. After spending Christmas behind bars, Buju appeared in court but did not apply for bail. Instead, Buju entered a not-guilty plea when he appeared in the United States District Court, Middle District of Florida, Tampa Division.
“We pleaded not guilty because Buju is an innocent man,” attorney-at-law David P. Markus told The Gleaner minutes after leaving the courtroom. Markus has already expressed confidence in securing an acquittal for Buju on the basis that “the government’s case has got no soul”.
After court yesterday, the attorney remained in a positive mood, even as his client was returned to custody. “We are eagerly awaiting trial in March so the truth can be told,” added Markus. He told The Gleaner that no application for bail was entered during the latest court appearance because of Buju’s “immigration status”.
US officials cancelled the entertainer’s visa issued to Buju shortly after he was arrested and charged last month. Because of the cancellation of his visa, Buju, whose correct name is Mark Myrie, would be subject to detention under the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Detainer even if he was granted bail on the criminal charges.
Buju will remain in federal custody until February 4 when he returns to court for a status conference before the trial expected to begin in early March. The trial had reportedly been set to begin on February 1, but the attorney representing Ian Thomas, one of two men charged with Buju, requested that the date be changed.
Buju, Thomas and James Mack, were indicted late last year by a Grand Jury on one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine and one count of aiding and abetting the possession of a firearm during a drug-trafficking crime.
The three face the possibility of up to life in prison if found guilty on both counts. Thomas and Mack, otherwise known as ‘Spencer Clarke’, were already denied bail. All three are represented by separate lawyers with Markus representing Buju, Michael Donaldson representing Mack and Wayne Golding Sr representing Thomas.

SIMPLY KEHV: Debut Album
Kehv, dubbed the Prince of Reggae Soul, stands tall with the release of his official debut album entitled “Simply KEHV.” Released on the label, Impressionist Music, this debut highlights the different styles of Kehv and displays the naked truth of his versatile vocal ability.
In case you haven’t heard of Kehv, then you’ve got some catching up to do. Kehv has been bubbling on the music scene since his earlier recordings in 1995. Born in the Parish of St. Ann, Jamaica, Kehv is strongly influenced by reggae, but also has a love for R&B. He proclaims his form of artistry as being a blending of the two with an infusion of hip-hop; producing the sound, he and his team call “Reggae Soul.”
Growing up in Jamaica, Kehv’s musical career began at the early age of ten in the church choir. With no formal training, he blossomed from singing to writing or co-writing almost every song and mastered both the guitar and the piano. After migrating to the United States and settling in Miami FL, Kehv recorded his first single "Half Way There" in 1995. With the demand from his audience for more music highlighting his beautiful vocals and masterful playing skills, Kehv continued to write, perform and release new music every chance he got. On radio stations all over South Florida and Jamaica his latest singles "Distant Lover", "Hear You Say", and “Take This Higher” can now be heard, while some of his other songs are blowing up on internet radio stations here in the United States, and as far as Canada and the UK.
Labeled as an indie artist on Myspace Music, a new artist by Partyspree.com, and a local artist at home in Miami, Kehv has surpassed all of these titles by working with superstars such as Kymani Marley, Wyclef Jean, and Tony Kelly. He has also shared the stage with international artists such as Beenie Man, Shaggy, Sean Kingston and Derrick Morgan of Morgan Heritage, and has performed on major network stations BET and MTV.
Kehv recently performed, in celebration of the completion of his album, at Miami’s premiere hot spot the Grass Restaurant and Lounge to a packed house. Superstars such as Kymani Marley, radio personality Vanessa James and many others were in attendance to support this talented artist on the rise!
With the release of his debut album Simply KEHV, now available worldwide on all digital outlet stores, Kehv has made available to his fans the music they have been clamoring for. This CD has all the ingredients to satisfy completely all music lovers. Roots rockas will fill up conscious riddims, reggae heads will rock away, and those who just like good music will quickly catch the two and four downbeats. This “fresh face” on the scene has truly put in the time and effort and Simply KEHV does not and will not disappoint.
According to top40-charts.net, "with his humble demeanor, spiritual awareness, and unquestionable talent, the music fraternity as well as the fans would be wise to take a look at this fresh face coming your way. His name is Kehv. Blessed from birth!"
Stan Evans Smith, of the West Indian Times says “Kehv relates his life experiences through his music…”
Stacy Lee-Williams of Kingleopromotions says "take a listen and you will instantly become a fan."
Please visit Kehv's interactive website at www.myspace.com/kehvmusic for much more information, including mp3's, contact info, full bio, pictures, and performance information.
Simply KEHV is NOW available on I-Tunes, Amazon and all digital outlet stores. CD w/videos can be purchased from www.myspace.com/kehvmusic and will be available from CDbaby soon.

Oh JAH JAH who is in Zion
IRIE be thy name
JAH kingdom come, JAH will be done In Babylon as it is in Zion
Give us this day our provision
