ERROL KERR SKIS FOR JAMAICA IN VANCOUVER’S 2010 WINTER GAMES!

February will welcome Jamaica’s skiing debut in a Winter Olympiad.  Just as the Jamaican Bobsled team blazed a new trail in Calgary’s ’88 Winter Games, so too now will Errol Kerr pioneer, as Jamaica’s first skier in a Winter Olympics.

Born of a Jamaican father and American mother, Errol was groomed for competition on Squaw Valley’s race program. Since his childhood, his love of the Caribbean island spawned dreams of representing Jamaica in international competition. As his alpine race skills grew, he realized the sport may be the avenue to fulfill his dreams. An invitation from the US Ski and Snowboard Association helped make his decision and chart his Jamaican journey.

Errol has incredibly diverse talent on the slopes. He’s competitive at an almost unheard-of discipline range including: giant slalom, downhill, slalom, super-G, super combined, and skier cross. Not only does Errol have the athleticism to race in such a wide variety of disciplines, his talent is such that he has a real shot of medaling in skier cross. He is one to watch on the road to Vancouver.

In the winter of 2007- 2008, he was the youngest of four athletes invited on the first U.S. Skier Cross Team that includes ex-World Cup skiers like Casey Pucket, Jake Fiala and Spyder-sponsored Daron Rahlves. After considering the US call, he ultimately declined, opting instead to place his focus on Jamaica, and set out to make reality happen. Errol, his coach Raul Guisado, ski technician Eric Holmer, operations director Pat Andrews and mother Catherine Kerr constructed the team under the direction of the Jamaican Ski Federation. The US Skier Cross invitation upped the ante of his competitiveness, and instead of solely focusing on alpine events, Errol decided to throw skier cross into his repertoire. Now, not only had he made the decision to carry the weight of a national team, he increased his competitive breadth beyond most athlete’s simple consideration. Errol's ready to rock the nation.

Watch out for Errol Kerr in the coming Winter Olympic Games.  The first scheduled men’s alpine event is Men’s Downhill on February 13th, from BC’s Whistler Mountain, Vancouver, Canada.

LOS ANGELES: KCRW PRESENTS HAITI RELIEF CONCERT AT EL REY THEATRE, SATURDAY, FEB. 6TH 2010

THE 10TH EPISODE OF NICHOLAS Da SILVA'S GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES 'DREAD AND ALIVE' FEATURING DREW MCINTOSH: JAMAICAN SUPER HERO
Dread & Alive (continued from last week)

Chapter Three

It was ten minutes after eight o’clock when Philip McIntosh entered his den, carrying in one hand a freshly-brewed cup of Blue Mountain coffee and a copy of the Daily Gleaner in the other. This was a normal routine for him. One that helped him wind down from the long, hot summer days of Mo'Bay. As he placed the newspaper on the desk, a thought came to mind: He realized that this would be the last time he would have this moment alone in his den, at least until his work was complete in the Cockpit Country. Shaking his head as if in acknowledgment of this fact, he pulled a chair to the desk and sat down. He leaned back and propped his feet on the desk, enjoying the cup of coffee as he thumbed through the newspaper.

At thirty-five, Philip was a determined man with many righteous causes including the preservation of cultural identity. A direct descendant of the Jamaican Maroons, he raised Drew to cultivate awareness and respect. Philip had first developed an interest in anthropology when he was a child. His father, Francis McIntosh, a professor of Cultural Anthropology in Jamaica, had taken him, along with his students, to Suriname. Philip remembered how much he liked the sounds of the rain forest and the primitive lifestyle of the forest people. Having established himself as a renowned Cultural Anthropologist, he was comfortable with where he was in his life.

He had traveled the seven continents, when most individuals never left their native land. He had a beautiful wife and mother of his child in Maria, a strong, intelligent woman who shared the same interests. And most importantly, he had a son in Drew, a child to whom he could pass his knowledge while shaping the man.

As Philip drank his coffee, he squinted behind his wire-framed glasses, staring at the mounted certificates hanging on the wall directly in front of him. The first one was his B.A., cum laude in Anthropology from the University of the West Indies, in 1968. During that period of his life, he had the opportunity to journey into the Cockpit Country as a student and work in the fields.  He would eventually spend two of his four years living in the rain forest, enough time to befriend Cudjoe, the village chief of the Jamaican Maroons.  As time progressed, their friendship would strengthen to the status of father and son.

The other two certificates were his M.A. and Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology, from San Francisco State University, in 1970 and 1975 respectively. That's where he met Maria.  From the first day their eyes met, they knew they were meant for each other and they proved it by returning to Jamaica after their education was complete and getting married.

REGGAE LABEL EXECUTIVE RAISES GRAMMY AWARENESS AMONG REGGAE PRODUCERS
Cristy Barber, the VP of marketing and promotions at VP Records, was tired of seeing some of the best acts in reggae continuously overlooked every time Grammy season rolled around. Now, as Billboard reports, she's taken it upon herself to lead a campaign to educate reggae artists and producers about the market-based benefits that the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences can offer.

Barber's already organized a January 21-25 conference in Jamaica, where she will meet with industry execs to discuss the Grammy nomination process. Her corporate gaze, though, extends well beyond Jamaica's borders, as she's looking to recruit 100 or more Recording Academy members from the global reggae industry to vote for the 2011 nominations. Currently, Jamaica has only one Recording Academy member, a shockingly low statistic that highlights how much reggae has been under (or mis) represented in recent Grammy nominations. There are some institutional barriers that hinder Jamaican involvement, though, most notably the requirement that all nominations be postmarked 2 weeks before they arrive in Los Angeles, an impossibly short time frame that has discouraged eligible Caribbean voters from joining the Academy.

Barber, who was once nominated for a Grammy herself back in 2005, and who presided over the Marley family's Tuff Gong/Ghetto Youths labels, has been lobbying for a rule change for years, and this year, she finally succeeded; in 2011, Jamaican members will be able to vote online via PDF ballots, which should help turnout. Still, though, Barber and others recognize the need to raise awareness from the ground up. She's pretty confident she can be successful, too. As she says, "Winning a reggae Grammy offers a level of recognition that impacts sales, radio play and concert demands, essential elements in establishing a new generation of reggae stars. I wouldn't be doing the genre, the artists or Jamaica justice if I didn't embark on this campaign."

REGGAE FILM FESTIVAL 2010 @ HILTON KINGSTON
The REGGAE FILM FESTIVAL2010 @ HILTON KINGSTON will open February25 at the HILTON KINGSTON Ballroom with a Red Carpet Gala Reception and premiere of the Reggae documentary RUFFN' TUFF – FOUNDERS OF THE IMMORTAL RIDDIM by Japanese film maker Shizuo Ishi,  featuring a galaxy of reggae stars including Leroy Sibbles, Bob Andy, Gregory Isaacs and John Holt  all of whom are among the VIP reggae celebrities invited as Special Guests. Other films include premieres of 3 new Jamaican feature films and a rare documentary on Lee 'Scratch' Perry.

The HILTON KINGSTON Ballroom will be transformed into a Cinema for nightly screenings, while the Jonkanoo Lounge will host Lunchtime screenings, a Seminar and a special Children's programme.  The HILTON KINGSTON offers a Reggae Film Festival accommodation package at reduced rates and will also offer Lunchtime Specials for midday cinema-goers.

Films already entered include features, documentaries and music videos by Jamaican and international directors, including entries from Hawaii, Italy, Japan, UK and Brazil.  Awards will be presented by a panel of Judges in 9 categories including Best Film, Best Documentary and Best Music Video, and audiences will be invited to selected their favourites.

Several international film celebrities have been invited to attend, including noted director SPIKE LEE, rapper/actress EVE and ROGER GUENEVERE SMITH, star of Jamaican feature 'Betta Mus' Come' and 8 Spike Lee films, as well as the blockbuster “American Gangster” starring Denzel Washington.  The noted actor will present a lecture with film clips as part of the REGGAE FILM FESTIVAL programme. Jamaican film celebrity guests include former heavyweight champ LENNOX LEWIS, star of 'Johnny Was” and star of two Jamaican feature films currently in production.   In addition to Title Sponsor HILTON KINGSTON, sponsors include IRIE-FM, PHASE THREE and STANLEY MOTTA RENTALS.

The REGGAE FILM FESTIVAL 2010 @ HILTON KINGSTON is an activity of the Jamaica Film Academy established in 2008. This year's event is produced by a Planning Committee led by film maker and film festival organizer Barbara Blake Hannah. She said that since the first Reggae Film Festival in 2008, there have been many spinoffs, with festival films being invited to international events and winning awards.  Film Festivals and people around the world, including Jamaica, have begun including reggae films in their programmes or presenting look-alike events, but these all have served to achieve the main objective of the Jamaica Film Academy, which is to promote Jamaican film culture and increase the opportunities for Jamaican film makers.

Blake-Hannah, who presented Jamaica's first film festival in 1974 and has produced several more since, has been a guest of international film festivals in Venice, Cuba, Iraq and Cannes. She is also producer/director of several films and worked on film productions including  “The Harder They Come”, “A High Wind in Jamaica” and “Kla$h”.  She and British film archivist Peter Gittins of Reggae Films UK conceptualized the first Reggae Film Festival in 2007 as a special event with private sector support. Mrs. Hannah continued developing the idea while working as Consultant to the Minister of Information, Culture, Youth & Sports on various projects including the planning and procedures for the first Reggae Month in 2008, into which the Reggae Film Festival was eventually incorporated with  some government support.

The Jamaica Film Academy's aim is to see the Reggae Film Festival become an annual date in Jamaica’s events calendar that will provide Jamaican films with the needed international exposure that they deserve. Four different films have been made as a direct result of its first event in 2008 and two films premiered at the Reggae Film Festival 2009 have won international awards,  evidence of just how important this event is.

The Jamaica Film Academy invites members of the Jamaican film industry and local businesses to help the Reggae Film Festival grow bigger and better.  Further information on the REGGAE FILM FESTIVAL 2010 @ HILTON KINGSTON can be had at the  official Reggae Film Festival website at www.jamaicafilmacademy.org.

HAITI RELIEF CONCERTS COME NEAR YOU
Not surprisingly, celebrities are putting their thinking caps on to devise more ways to fuel money into the Haiti relief effort. Musicians are taking on the brunt of the storm by doing various charitable acts involving their music; concerts around nation, downloads online, benefits and even a shoe donation online.
Thanks to the internet, all of us can get involved in many different ways and reap the entertainment (and the feel-good feelings) along the way.

Love For Haiti is a benefit happening today at 5 p.m. and concluding Jan. 31 at 5 a.m. The event will be live for 12 hours on those three nights between 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. Love for Haiti is a 36-hour fundraiser at New York’s Webster Hall. The goal is to raise at least $50,000 for Haiti with all proceeds going towards Doctors Without Borders.

Webster Hall will be displaying a life-like projection of live video of the fundraiser on the venue’s exterior wall, as well as a live Twitter feed. Supporters can also check out the video on USTREAM. Band, The Crystal Method takes will perform tomorrow and will also be featured on “Love For Haiti’s” video stream. Quarterly Art Soiree is also planning on making a special appearance.

KCRW 88.9 FM and Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre are putting on a Haiti Relief concert February 6. Proceeds will go to Operation USA. Operation USA’s slogan is “Give and it gets there” with 98% of donations going to on the ground relief. Tickets are $25 dollars each and covers the shows for Hepcat, Dengue Fever, Joey’s Altruda’s Crucial Riddims & Reggae Greats Revue featuring Wailing Souls, Elan, Eljai and specials guests, The Lions, cumbia band Very Be Careful, The Tuffingtons, Echodelic Soundsystem and DJ Miles Perlich.

Next on the concert list is Rhymesayers Entertainment who is putting on a benefit for Haiti February 9 at First Ave in Minneapolis. Tickets are $20 each and the proceeds are for Oxfam America, Doctors Without Borders and Wyclef Jean’s Yele Haiti foundation. Hosted by Slug of Atmosphere with performances by Brother Ali, Freeway, Sage Francis, Jake One, I Self Devine, Sims, Toki Wright, BK One, B. Dolan, Muja Messiah, Kevin Beacham, and King Otto.

Sage Francis commented "It's embarrassing to admit how unaware I've been of the living conditions in Haiti. And that's before the earthquake hit. I'm honored to be involved with this fundraiser and I'm thankful for the conditions that allow me to be on the giving end of this charity."

Mary J. Blige and Andrea Bocelli are planning on covering Simon and Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water during the Grammy Awards, which airs live on Sunday at 8pm P.S.T. After the performance, a download of the song will be available on itunes.com/Target with all proceeds going to the American Red Cross.

Jamaican reggae star Shaggy and Sean Paul, Haitian musician Belo and soca singers Alison Hinds of Barbados and Destra Garcia from Trinidad and Tobago are also taking the download route for their song "Rise Again." “‘Rise Again’ is for the people of Haiti. It is to show them that we are here for them and that we will support them each step of the way as they begin rebuilding their lives,” Shaggy said. Proceeds from the download will go to the Digicel Haiti Relief Fund.

Wilco is taking an interesting risk that sees the best in people by posting to live shows on their website as free downloads with a request to donate $15 or more to either OXFAM or Doctors Without Borders. The live shows include a November 4th concert at HMV Forum in London and July 13’s show at KeySpan Park in Brooklyn, N.Y
Jessica Simpson focuses on something specific; shoes. Simpson, hairdresser Ken Paves and friend CaCee Cobb, are working with Nashville-based charity Soles4Souls and 5000Shoes.com to help send one million pairs of shoes to Haiti. The singer is encouraging to "do everything that we can for the victims in Haiti. Just five dollars will buy two people a pair of shoes." Donations can be made through 5000shoes.com.

Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Ben Harper, Joan Baez and Ry Cooder all signed a guitar to be raffled by The Guacamole Fund, a Hermosa Beach, California based public charity. Proceeds are going to Operation USA. Raffle tickets are $100 each and the raffle takes place Jan. 31 at 12 p.m. PST

The Hope for Haiti Now telethon was already a huge success and brought in $57 million dollars but it's not finished making money. An album of the event was released on itunes.

Individual songs are 99 cents or the full album is selling for $7.99, 171,000 units were already sold. Proceeds from the album go to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, Oxfam America, Partners in Health, Red Cross, UNICEF, United Nations World Food Programme, and Yele Haiti Foundation.

SMILE JAMAICA 2010 CALLED OFF
Ghetto Youth’s International, organizers of the annual Bob Marley concert Smile Jamaica, have announced that the 2010 staging of the celebration of the King of Reggae’s birth would have to be called off, due to numerous circumstances.

Smile Jamaica spokesperson Norman Bryan, said yesterday that while the organisation was looking forward to staging the concert after “there are some extenuating circumstances that just cannot be ignored, and there’s no way we could proceed with the concert bearing them in mind.”

He added that the Marley family will still be celebrating Bob’s birthday and honouring his legacy in private.

Bryan also said that the Ghetto Youth’s International would be redoubling its efforts to make a 2011 staging possible.

“Ghetto Youths International will continue spreading the message of the Hon. Robert Nesta Marley, and we will be definitely putting our heads together to make 2011 the year Smile Jamaica returns from its hiatus.”

Smile Jamaica saw its historic birth in December of 1976, when it was held at the National Heroes Park in Kingston. The event took place a mere two days after gunmen almost ended Bob Marley’s life, and he was recuperating in the Blue Mountains. It was there that Marley magic reigned supreme yet again, as an injured Bob agreed to perform one song for the 80,000-strong throng of patrons. That one song turned into a magical 90 minute performance with Marley and the Wailers.

ROCKSTEADY PIONEER LYNN TAITT DEAD AT 75
Groundbreaking rocksteady guitarist Lynn Taitt -- who played on influential records by the Skatalites, Derrick Morgan and Desmond Dekker passed away last Wednesday, according to the Jamaica Gleaner. Taitt, who was 75 and a Montreal resident, succumbed to cancer.

Born Nerlyn Taitt in San Fernando, Trinidad, he picked up guitar in the early 1960s -- when he was well into his 20s -- first heading to Jamaica in August 1963 to perform at a gig arranged by the legendary Byron Lee and designed to celebrate the country's first year of Independence from England. Taitt stayed in Jamaica, where he played with the aforementioned ska pioneers, plus the Sheiks, Comets and the Cavaliers.

By 1966, Taitt's band, the Jets, helped launch the rocksteady movement by crafting the bassline for 'Take It Easy' by Hopeton Lewis, which many cite as genre's first song. Establishing the Federal Studios sound, Taitt went on to help craft Alton Ellis' staple 'Girl I've Got a Date.'

Taitt worked often with Leslie Kong -- the Chinese-Jamaican producer who first recorded Bob Marley -- lending his memorable riffs to Dekker's '007 (Shantytown).' In 1968, Taitt moved to Canada, living in Toronto in the 1970s before ultimately settling in Montreal. There he wrote for local reggae, jazz and calypso groups and played and recorded with the Kingpins, a local ska outfit.
