The Deva Kingdom - Aromatherapy Newsletter - Winter issue #15, December 2009

The Deva Kingdom - Greetings

Hello to everyone and I hope this newsletter greets you with informative and inspiring information you can use on your everyday journey! As the world twirls; we unfold and transform on our path, walking forward in an ever changing stride. I recently took a trip camping and hiking, reviewing and processing what had come before with little ponder unto the future other than where I am today in this moment in my life. Conquering some illusionary fears I had somehow created for myself, stepping outside my box and greeting a new day or new future which is unknown in this moment, however being created by my actions and attention now. A sojourn for the soul, deep ripples through the arch ways returning to me a resilient moment for my next journey! Soul-food!

New on my site: Please check out the “Monthly LOVE Specials” on the Wisdom of the Earth web page, of my web-site. This is a great opportunity to save on necessary essentials you may commonly use. Jojoba oil - Simmondsia chinensis

Family/Simmondsiaceae

Jojoba is also referred to as goat nut, pig nut, wild hazel, quinine nut and coffee berry. The jojoba plant is the sole species of the Simmondsiaceae family. Jojoba is a small perennial evergreen woody shrub native to the Sonora desert of Arizona, northern Mexico, southern and Baja California. The major production areas for jojoba oil are USA, Mexico, Costa Rica, Australia, Brazil and Paraguay. The jojoba shrub is a dioecious plant (female and male flowers on separate shrubs). The jojoba shrub is from 19 inches to 7 feet in height, with a deep tap root which dives into mother earth up to a 49-foot depth. Jojoba likes a high pH soil from 5-8, thriving in semiarid regions. The leaves of the jojoba plant are a grayish green in color with a thick and waxy texture, and opposite and oval in shape up to 2 inches long. The plant flowers in the spring, the male flowers are small yellow and spherical in shape, the female flowers are green and somewhat inconspicuous, being wind pollinated. The fruit seed is ovoid in shape and harvested in the summer. Seed production is generally limited until about the fourth year, with peak productivity by year 12 and may live as long as 200 years old.

Jojoba oil is light golden in color with very little odor. The extraction method used is cold pressed. The liquid wax yield is about 50% of the seeds dry weight. The meal left over after extraction has a high content of protein and contains “simmondsin” an appetite suppressant. Jojoba esters are similar to human sebum. The chemical composition resembles that of sperm whale oil which is now outlawed. Jojoba contains liquid wax esters, monounsaturated fatty acids (predominate essential fatty acids are Eicosenoic, Erucic, and Oleic acids), Vitamin E, and minerals. Jojoba is extremely resistant to oxidation and therefore resistant to rancidity. Jojoba is more a liquid wax than oil, moisturizing without blocking pores of the skin and hair follicles. A light and highly penetrative oil, great for rough and dry skin and is an excellent choice for aromatherapy preparations. Five to six drops of jojoba oil can certainly replace any facial moisturizer you may now use with preferred results, without leaving an oily residue. Jojoba may be used to remove make-up, a small amount may be used as a leave in hair conditioner or conditioning hair treatment by applying larger amounts and leaving in for a few hours. Jojoba has a light sun screen protection factor of 4%, excellent for mature skin, and offers protection to skin, hair and scalp.
