Grammy Spotlight

Congratulations to all the winners at January's 52nd annual Grammy awards show.

Beyonce broke the Grammy record for most awards taken by a female artist in one night with six.  Her awards included song of the year for "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" and best contemporary R&B album for I Am…Sasha Fierce.  Taylor Swift was close behind with four wins including album of the year for Fearless and best female country vocal performance for "White Horse."

The Black Eyed Peas took home three awards, including best pop vocal album for The E.N.D. while Lady Gaga took two -- The Fame as best electronic/dance album and "Poker Face" as best dance recording.   Additionally, "Use Somebody" by rockers Kings of Leon won record of the year and country act Zac Brown Band took the best new artist nod.

In more good news, the 2010 Grammy ratings were the highest in six years with 25.8 million viewers!  For a complete list of winners visit grammy.com.

Online Music Sales Up

According to the new Digital Music Report 2010 from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), worldwide digital music sales are on the rise.  Specifically, single song download sales increased nearly 10 percent from 2008 to 2009, while digital album sales rose approximately 20 percent.

Plus, due to the dynamic partnerships between music companies and their technology partners, there are now more than 11 million legal tracks online and 400 licensed music services available worldwide, compared to less than 50 licensed music services in 2003.

Despite this progress, the report also highlights the continued harm illegal file-sharing and other forms of piracy cause to the music industry.  While the music industry has increased its digital revenues by 940 percent since 2004, the online theft of music has been a major factor behind the overall global market decline of around 30 percent in the same period. Overall, global music sales in the first half of 2009 were down by 12 percent (physical and digital sales).  Check out the full report here.
