BLAKK RASTA TO STORM ETHIOPIA ON RASTAFARIAN PILGRIMAGE
|
|
|
|
Blakk Rasta is famed for his track Barakk Obama Ghana’s reggae superstar Blakk Rasta will be one of the headline acts at the forthcoming reggae festival in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The festival, which comes off on the 6th of February, commemorates the birth of the reggae legend, Bob Marley.
Blakk Rasta is scheduled to present two speeches on pan africanism and two musical performances at the event, which he describes as a “pilgrimage” for the Rastafarian fraternity. In attendance will be Rita Marley, wife of the late Bob Marley, and organisers say this year’s event - themed “Towards One Africa” - will be the biggest since its inceptions decades ago. The Ghanaian-born reggae sensation of Barack Obama fame, told Myjoyonline.com, his selection to deliver a speech is rather humbling. Organisers say Blakk Rasta’s song, which he released in the lead-up to the United States elections in 2008, has received wide acceptance in Ethiopia.
Indeed, his song received airplay and reviews many international media outlets, including the CNN, BBC and the New York Times. Blakk Rasta, who holds a Bachelor’s in Land Economics from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has been on the reggae music scene for years but had been a virtual unknown until his pro-Obama anthem threw him into the limelight. He told Myjoyonline.com the Ghana Embassy in Addis Ababa will host him after a ceremony that will welcome him as the participant from Ghana. The Ethiopian invitation comes weeks after a recent show in Amsterdam, which drew a massive crowd, and a scheduled tour of the Caribbean, which he cancelled. The HITZ FM Taxi Driver presenter has raised the standard of reggae music in the country, making him a ‘connoisseur of reggae music in GH,’ one fan said.

THE 12TH EPISODE OF NICHOLAS Da SILVA'S GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES 'DREAD AND ALIVE' FEATURING DREW MCINTOSH: JAMAICAN SUPER HERO
|

Dread & Alive....is an ongoing graphic novel series about Jamaican Super Hero Drew McIntosh. If you missed any episodes, installment, click here to read:
Chapter Three
Philip turned his attention to a stack of cardboard boxes piled neatly against the wall. Taking a seat in a lotus position on the hardwood floor, he opened the one nearest to him and began shuffling through its content as if he knew exactly what he was searching for. A moment later, he retrieved a photo album that contained pictures of his work in the field. Most of the pictures were of his college years living in the Cockpit Country.
As he flipped through the album, he came across a polaroid that he had not seen in a long time. It was a photo of himself alongside Cudjoe, and an unidentified Maroon woman. He removed the polaroid from its plastic protector and stared at the picture. It took him back to a small mountain village in the heart of the Cockpit Country. Philip was beginning his third year of university and living among the Jamaican Maroons. Not only was he still adjusting to marriage, having wed Beneba, a beautiful Maroon woman just a year before, but he was about to take on the responsibility of fatherhood, all this by the age of twenty.
Unfortunately for Philip, one dreadful night would change his life forever. What seemed to be severe abdominal pain turned out to be labor in her eighth month. The midwife of the village was immediately summoned, along with Cudjoe, to help in the emergency delivery of the child. As they attempted to deliver the baby, a patient but inexperienced Philip stayed by Beneba's side, following the instructions given to him by the midwife. The labor was severe, lasting for several hours and sending Beneba drifting in and out of consciousness. Her fever rose and nothing the midwife did could stop it. When the baby crowned and finally pushed free, there was a moment of dreadful silence before the unmistakable sound of a newborn's cry filled the room.
The midwife, laughing and shouting with relief and joy, wrapped the boy in a clean cloth and handed him to an elated Philip. "We shall name this child, Cuffee," Philip said, holding his newborn son proudly in the air. "Yes. That is the day name for the boy who is born on a Friday," Cudjoe added. "Say hello to Cuffee." Philip, smiling, gently placed Cuffee in Beneba's arms. "He is so beautiful," she said, looking up at Philip with love-filled eyes. As everyone gathered around the proud new parents, Beneba suddenly gasped and spit up blood. "What’s wrong?" Philip cried out. "She’s lost a lot of blood. Too much for her fragile body," the midwife said just above a whisper. "Quick, take Cuffee outside," she commanded, handing the newborn to Cudjoe. "You too," she said, turning to Philip. "You must go. There’s nothing you can do for her. This is in Jah’s hands, now." "No...." Philip pleaded, "I want to stay with her." "There is nothing for you to do. Please, go outside. Let me tend to her."
Philip continued to resist but soon saw the fight was hopeless. He leaned over Beneba, barely conscious, gave her a long kiss and whispered in her ear, "So Jah Seh." He knew this was goodbye. Outside the hut, Philip joined Cudjoe who was standing under a full moon. Together they waited for good news.

GREENSLEEVES PUBLISHING, THE WORLD’S LEADING REGGAE MUSIC PUBLISHER, SIGNED EXCLUSIVE AGREEMENTS WITH LEADING SINGER/SONGWRITERS
|
|
|
|
Those deals will see Greensleeves Publishing represent and market the songs of these six in-demand reggae singers and songwriters worldwide.
Rising British Reggae star, Gappy Ranks, signed an exclusive publishing agreement with Greensleeves Publishing, quickly followed by a record deal with Greensleeves Records. Gappy‘s most recent hit “Heaven In Her Eyes” is included on VP Records’ Strictly The Best Vol. 40 and on Greensleeves Records’ The Biggest Reggae One-Drop Anthems 2009.
He received the 2009 Crystal Blue Best Artist of the Year Award along with the Best Recording of the Year Award for “Heaven In Her Eyes.” His first album, “Breakfast in Jamaica" will be released on Greensleeves Records in early 2010. The album will include "Stinkin Rich” (currently topping the UK Reggae charts), "Heaven In Her Eyes" (which has been number one for an amazing 22 weeks on the UK reggae charts), "Thanks & Praises", "Butterflies", "So god bless", "Rise out of the ghetto" and features tracks with Spice, Million Stylez among others. This is what Gappy had to say about his new deal with Greensleeves Records, “I grew up listening to albums from Greensleeves when I was a kid because my father used to collect all the Greensleeves titles and play them in the house. I always dreamed of one day having my own album being released by Greensleeves and be a part of the legends like Yellowman and other big names on their roster. It has been a hard journey and I feel proud to represent the UK in the reggae world and would like to thank Greensleeves, my management team and all the fans for supporting me in my career.”
The son of Reggae royalty Freddie McGregor and member of the Big Ship family, Chino has signed a co-publishing deal with STB Music, Greensleeves’ US affiliate, and Tinkintoe Music. Chino’s track “Protected” was included on Reggae Gold 2009 and his lastest single “Never Change (From Mawning)” has hit music charts in the UK and US. Being a part of the Big Ship family and his interactions with such Reggae legends as the late Dennis Brown, Marcia Griffith and Bounty Killer to name a few, has resulted in Chino gaining an in-depth knowledge of recording and production techniques.
Another star coming out of the Big Ship family is dancehall singjay Laden who has also signed a co-publishing deal with STB Music and Tinkintoe Music. Ladens track “Money Over War” appeared on Reggae Gold 2009 and his big hit “Time To Shine” was featured on Ragga Ragga Ragga 2009.
Freddie McGregor says that he is confident with the new partnership his son Chino and Laden have made with Greensleeves/VP Records and is looking forward to making great music in the years to come.
Neil “Diamond” Edwards, Director of A&R, says “Big Ship is more than just a label that we are partnering with, I consider them family. We’ve had many successes in the past. I look forward to working with the Chino and Laden projects and continuing our long standing relationship with the Big Ship Family.”
The veteran British Reggae artist Chukki Starr has signed a co-publishing agreement with Greensleeves Publishing. The conscious singjay attracted notable attention when he delivered his highly acclaimed debut album Ghetto Youth's Livity, which was produced by Ariwa Sounds' Mad Professor. Considered one of the UK’s top Reggae artists, Greensleeves Records will release “Chukki Starr: Most Wanted” on March 23, 2010.
The veteran Dancehall artist Goofy aka MR. G has signed to Greensleeves Publishing. Mr. G released his debut album Issues in 2004 on S Curve Records. Along with working on releases for his Young Blood label, MR. G’s new album Wine Pon It is due out in 2010. He has numerous singles that have been buzzing in the US, UK and Jamaica. Currently his single “Before The Year Done” has been climbing the music charts.
Greensleeves has acquired the catalog of the great singer/songwriter/producer Keith Hudson aka the "Dark Prince of Reggae." An accomplished songwriter who wrote for artists as varied as Alton Ellis, Delroy Wilson, John Holt, his biggest contribution as a songwriter came when Big Youth recorded “S-90 Skank” in 1972. The song which incorporates motorcycle noises recorded in the studio become the DJ’s biggest hit and a reggae classic. As an artist, Ketih Hudson contributed many classic albums including Flesh of My Skin, Blood of My Blood released in 1975, which is considered a masterpiece among the Reggae community. In 2010, Greensleeves will reissue an expanded edition of Rasta Communications as part of its Greensleeves Reggae Classics series adding “Brand”, the dub version of the album.
Olivier Chastan, President of Greensleeves Publishing, says “all these signings bring a thrilling conclusion to a very active year for Greensleeves Publishing which included placements in multiple films, computer games and TV shows along with songs on albums by Wycleff Jean, Matisyahu, Major Lazer and DJ Khaled. It once again shows our dedication to invest in new talents such as Gappy Ranks, Chino and Laden while consolidating our catalog with established songwriters and catalogs such as Goofy, Chukki Starr and Keith Hudson”.

NEW COLLECTION OF NEW COLLECTION OF DUBS DISC SET FOR FEBRUARY 2ND RELEASE EXCLUSIVELY ON ITUNES
|
|
|
|
On February 2, 2010, in commemoration of Marley's 65th birthday, Tuff Gong/Island/UMe will issue a new digital-only collection, In Dub Vol. 1, exclusively on the iTunes Store.
In Dub Vol. 1 is the first in a series of collections of classic, rare and new dub excursions in the Bob Marley & The Wailers catalog. The debut set features 10 classic dub remixes (most previously unavailable on album) and a newly crafted dub of "Lively Up Your Dub," exclusive to this package, by foundation dub mix engineer Scientist.
In 2010, the year he would have celebrated his 65th birthday (February 6th), Bob Marley continues to inspire and influence people around the world. One of the most charismatic and challenging performers of our time--a musical, political and even spiritual figure of mystical proportions, both poet and prophet, hero and rebel--Marley remains reggae's greatest icon and a monumental musical figure of our time. Throughout 2010, Island/Tuff Gong/UMe, his worldwide catalog home, will honor with new album releases a legacy which continues to resonate as Marley's music is revealed and rediscovered by new generations.
No artist has so dominated his genre in modern music as Marley has reggae, with his greatest hits album Legend, the biggest selling reggae album in history. Militant yet reflective, angry yet romantic, Marley sang of rebellion and uprisings, Rasta and the power of love. A man who rose from the humblest of origins to become a champion for the oppressed, he was the MOST RENOWNED Jamaican artist to give voice to the struggles of his people and to the Rastafarian culture, and the first to gain global fame.
Marley cut his first single in 1962 and the next year teamed with Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston. Soon they would be known as the Wailers. In the late '60s, with Marley now devoted to Rastafari, they recorded the gems "Sugar Sugar," "Soul Shakedown Party," "Duppy Conqueror," "Soul Almighty," "My Cup," "Trenchtown Rock" and "Small Axe." In the '70s, Bob Marley founded the Tuff Gong label and signed to Chris Blackwell's Island Records. The albums that followed, from Catch A Fire , Burnin' and Natty Dread (his first without the Wailers) to Rastaman Vibration, Exodus (which Time magazine anointed Album of the Century), Kaya, Survival and Uprising, earned global acclaim. "Stir It Up," "Concrete Jungle," "I Shot The Sheriff," "Get Up, Stand Up," "No Woman, No Cry," "War," "Positive Vibration," "Jamming," "Waiting In Vain" and "One Love/People Get Ready" became anthems.
Though he passed away at the young age of 36, "no one in rock and roll has left a musical legacy that matters more or one that matters in such fundamental ways," wrote music writer Robert Palmer upon Marley's posthumous induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Attesting to the power and relevance of that music, Bob Marley lives on.
Tracklisting: "Roots, Rock, Dub" "Is This Love Dub" (previously unavailable on album) "Forever Loving Jah Dub" (previously unavailable on album) "Lively Up Your Dub" "Three Little Birds Dub" "Crazy Baldhead Dub" (previously unavailable on album) "Waiting In Vain Dub" (previously unavailable on album) "Jamming Version" "One Love/People Get Ready Dub" (mix previously unavailable on album) "She's Gone Dub" (previously unavailable on album) "Smile Jamaica Version"

REGGAE ARTISTE IION REYMZ AID HOMELESS AND ABANDON CHILDREN IN MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA
|
|
|
Iionreymz Production released its first compilation album called FREE AS A RIVER which feature Reggae artistes and musician; Dean Frazer, Luciano, Fantan Mojah, Chezidek, Mikey Melody, Mikey General and Paul Elliot to name a few to pave the way for C.E.O./Producer/Artist Iion Reymz to launch his own singles Plenipotentiary and Don’t Fret in local the industry. A past student of Cornwall College and owner of a couple of Herbal stores, Ezra ‘Iion Reymz” Williams and wife Francene has dedicated their efforts to the construction of the Francene Children's Home in Montego Bay.
The couple decided to build this home 3 years ago after assessing that there are too many homeless and abandoned children living in Montego Bay.
Mr. and Mrs. Williams are assisted by Secretary, Camisha Francis and the three have already identified and acquired lands and began construction of a 6 bedroom – 6 bathroom house with living and dinning areas, maid quarters, play room, kitchen and an area for administration. The building is incomplete and the construction stalled because they are out of money but currently Mr and Mrs Williams assist 10 kids providing them with lunch money for school, uniforms and even money for some of the boys to get regular haircut at the barber.
The couple is in need of an estimated 2 million Jamaican dollars to complete the building which they expect to house 60 children, this money they hope to acquire from music sales and live performances. Mrs Williams is confident that whenever the building is completed she can garner enough support to furnish the home but right now the focus is on completing the construction, she states that, "right now we need sand, cement and steel, we also need water which we have to purchase and already have enough blocks to complete the building". Iion Reymz recently released a two singles “Plenipotentiary” a word he quickly explains that can be found in the dictionary, “a noun, which means envoy or commissioner appointed to act according to his own discretion” and Don't Fret check it!

TRIBUTE TO THE LEGENDS CONCEPT: The Tribute to the Legends concept stems from the intention to recognize the artists that have contributed to the Reggae community who have passed in the previous year. This year's tributes are to the following artists: David Isaacs, Vivian Jackson, and Steelie Johnson David Isaacs
was a member of roots-reggae harmony group, The Itals, which he joined in 1997. He recorded five solo albums, the last of which, Happy Ending, was released in 1982.
Vivian "Yabby You" Jackson
Jamaican producer and recording artist Vivian Jackson, became a force on the Kingston roots reggae scene of the '70s under the moniker Yabby You. Though he grew his hair in the tangled dreadlocks favored by Rastafarians, his devout Christianity was reflected in his lyrics, earning him the nickname "Jesus Dread."Jackson's breakthrough came in 1972, when he cut "Conquering Lion" on free studio time granted by legendary producer Osbourne "King Tubby" Ruddock. The song became a hit in Jamaica, and its vocal refrain -- "be-you, yabby yabby you" -- was foreshortened into his professional handle.
Wycliffe "Steely" Johnson
Wycliffe “Steely” Johnson contribution towards Jamaica’s music and culture is priceless. He has helped to create what we now enjoy as Dancehall music and made way for the new generation of Dancehall/Reggae music producers. With more than three decades of solid hits Steely has an enviable repertoire and is a true legend of Jamaican music.

MONSOON : : "Keep On Loving You" -name of CD/Album (No Album - Single Release Only)
|
|
REGGAE SINGER/DJ "MONSOON" RELEASES LOVE SONG!
“Monsoon” born Denton Bedward, a native of Northern Clarendon in Jamaica, returns to the music scene with a feel good tune that’s both lyrically strong and melodic. Set to the “Heat Riddim” and produced by the ‘House of Riddim’ crew in Austria, “Keep On Loving You” is an expression of love and commitment to that special woman. It’s not overly produced, nor does it make unrealistic claims and promises of love. But rather “Keep On Loving You” expresses love in a natural and pure way. One will find themselves singing the hook “rain or shine” from the very first listen. “Keep On Loving You” is both refreshing and original, a great way to kick off 2010.
Monsoon demonstrates his vocal and writing ability in this latest release, and is quickly finding his place in the reggae music industry. Like his most recent hit, “As Salaam Alaikum“ (Mama Africa), this new release “Keep On Loving You” is likely to be a chart topper. Rock and Groove to this one, just in time Valentines Day!
-release date: February 1, 2010

A PRAYER FOR HAITI
Within the last 16 years, Haiti has been the bore the brunt of catastrophic natural disasters that have claimed the lives of many and destroyed the island's structural integrity. Please join us in prayer as we lift Haiti, its inhabitants and all those affected by this disaster, up in prayer.
Heavenly Father,
It is with a heavy heart that we come to you, not necessarily knowing what we should ask for because many of us are wondering, "Why did this happen? Why has tragedy struck Haiti again and why do so many lives have to be lost again? Why has this beautiful island been struck by a catastrophic earthquake and ruined?" But as many questions as we have regarding the situation, we still humble ourselves before you to ask for your mercy to be upon Haiti and its people. Extend your hand upon the land and restore all that has been lost, destroyed and damaged to be better than it was before. As rescue teams search for casualties, give them foresight. May they be led by your wisdom, and encouraged by your strength and advised by your discernment. There are yet people who are surviving and I pray that the rescue workers would find them in time and revive them. For the lives that will be lost, we pray for immediate comfort to come to the family and friends of the deceased. For those of us who are watching this unfold from the outside, I pray that you would give us hearts of compassion so that we can give out of our surplus to fill the deficit that is widening in Haiti. May we all extend ourselves in any way possible to secure our brothers and sisters in Haiti. And may every prayer regarding this tragedy be heard and responded to in your good time.
Amen
