Our reggae family share their feelings:
..... One day at a time, ya know. Well, it's just sad. That's all. The whole "Reggae" aspect of our business is rooted in "Bigga" and "Big Up Promotions". We are trully indebted to he and Belle. So let's big up Bigga! Big up! Big up! Big up!
-Develle
....Was given this sad news yesterday that a legend in the reggae industry Jeff "Bigga" Woodworth passed away this weekend in Sacramento of a heart attack. Long time promoter, friend, family of all the Northern Ca. reggae scene for many years. He brought many artists to Cali in the late 70s thru the 80's and into the early 90's. He has worked with every major reggae act in those years and was respected throughout the world and worked with and mentored many in the reggae scene. I knew Bigga for many years - after his baseball career- as we both worked in the school system and loved Reggae music.
He brought many reggae artists that never came to Cali till he got them here, and he worked with all the major fests and venues in No. Cal. He was known in JA and Cali and was loved by all and he will be remembered always....
Jah rest his soul One Love -Al
...Really sad, I don't think there was anything bad anyone could say about him. Just really nice memories of Bigga and Belle.
-Tullah
One of my my favorite memory of Bigga was his annual early-morning calls to me on my birthday - and I mean early! He wanted to be the first one to wish me Happy Birthday each year.
-Kaati
As Bigga would say, "Ever forward - Never backward. Jah"

THE 13TH EPISODE OF NICHOLAS Da SILVA'S GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES 'DREAD AND ALIVE' FEATURING DREW MCINTOSH: JAMAICAN SUPER HERO
|
|
Dread & Alive....is an ongoing graphic novel series about Jamaican Super Hero Drew McIntosh. If you missed any episodes, installment, click here to read:
...The question caught Philip by surprised. "So you want to know about the Maroons?" Philip asked, glancing up at Maria. Philip paused for a moment, trying to decide where to began. He then sat on the side of the bed.
"The Maroons are descendents of African slaves from a long time ago. They freed themselves from the British during the 1600’s. They were extremely cunning people, fleeing into the hills of the Cockpit Country. They were able to maintain their freedom by learning how to navigate the trackless Cockpit Country. They also learned how to live off the land. The British tried to bring them back, but the Maroons camouflaged themselves with leaves, blending in with the surrounding forest.”
"Wow," Drew said, marveling at what he was hearing. "Am I a Maroon?"
"By blood, you are. We are direct descendant of the Maroons."
"What does Maroon mean?"
"Maroons comes from the Spanish word ‘cimarrones,'which means savage.”
"Are they really savage?"
Philip shook his head. "I would never call someone fighting for their freedom, savage. The Maroons are free-spirited, but very determined to protect their freedom."
"Are they ....?"
Maria quickly interrupted the conversation. "That’s enough for tonight," she told Drew.
"You need your rest, now. We’ve got a long journey ahead of us."
"Listen to your mother," Philip added. "I’ll tell you more about the Maroons tomorrow."
"Promise?" Drew asked.
"Promise," Philip said, smiling as he kissed his son goodnight.
Maria smiled down at Drew as she brushed a strand of hair from his face. She gently kissed him goodnight. "You have sweet dreams," she said softly before taking her husband's hand.
Together, they left the room, turning the lights out behind them.
To be continued …,

IF EDUCATION IS THE KEY TO THE FUTURE OF OUR YOUTH, YOU HOLD THE KEY TO THE POSSIBILITIES

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Annette Fitterer 651-338-7769 annettejamaica@hotmail.com
Contact: Katie Knutson 763-439-4773 weissknutson@comcast.net
Annette Fitterer of Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery invites you to the 3rd Annual Jamaican Fundraiser Fort Williams Pre-School in Fort Williams, Jamaica
MINNEAPOLIS, MN: If education is the key to the future of our youth, you hold the key to the possibilities. The 3rd Annual Jamaican Fundraiser returns to raise funds for the Fort Williams Pre-School Project, based in Fort Williams, Jamaica, on Saturday, February 27th, 1-5 p.m. at Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery. Tickets are $20, prior to event and $25 at the door. The fundraiser’s grand prize will be a four-night stay at Donaldson’s Resort in Negril, Jamaica. All who purchase an event ticket will gain admission, receive free beer and will be entered-to-win the grand prize. No need to be present to win.
The funds will assist in the final stages of the electrical work started back in 2009 as well as contribute to the exterior refurbishing of the pre-school. From electricity to a beautiful school, the Fort Williams pre-school continues to grow as a focal point in the community and a suitable learning environment for the future of its children.
A trip taken in 1995, Minnesotan Annette Fitterer was inspired and motivated to do something in a location that she found was her ‘home away from home.’
“Jamaica was at first just a simple vacation destination to me. I had a very humbling experience that made me take a look at my life and how grateful I should be. I had the opportunity to experience the culture, meet people who have become my dear friends and my family,” said Fitterer. I was introduced to a pre-school teacher of 34 years, Ms. Loretta Samms and it changed my life. Then she introduced me to the many children that she taught. “I could see what was needed by looking at those children’s faces.
They loved their teacher and they loved to learn. What could I do for this school and these children so that the only worries would be getting to class and learning.” Fitterer has dedicated her life to making sure that not only Fort Williams Pre-School receives the necessary means to provide the ideal learning environment, but to continue to help other schools in years to come.
For 2010, plans are in the works to finish the electrical project that was started in 2009. After electricity has been solidified, refurbishment of the exterior will begin. Materials, tools and workmanship will be needed to complete this goal. All the money goes directly to the project to make a suitable environment for these children to attend school.
EVENT INFO: Date: Saturday, February 27th, 2010 Time: 1-5 p.m. Location: Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery - 800 LaSalle Plaza - Minneapolis, MN 55402 Ticket Info: Tickets - $20 prior to event; $25.00 at the door Purchase tickets directly through Annette Fitterer at Rock Bottom Brewery at 612-332-7350 Check out our FACEBOOK page: annettesjamaicafundraiser ### Mission Statement “Education is the Key” We are committed to education and nurturing the potential of all children. Organizer, Denise Carter of HASO Live says, “This fundraiser is the beginning of a new fund. The proceeds will be helping the Senior Class at Grant High School to afford caps gowns, announcement, senior trips and what ever is needed to help these kids to graduate.
A lot of kids are deciding to not graduate because their families cannot afford the expenses. PRESS RELEASE: JAMAICA'S 8TH WONDER - REGGAE CONSCIOUS SINGER MARK WONDER TAKES CALIFORNIA BY STORM - GEARS UP FOR A 3 MONTH TOUR OF EUROPE!
|
|
|
Back in June 2009 I received an email from Daniel Frankston about Mark Wonderand the completion of a very successful U. S. West Coast tour. It was refreshing to hear all the positive things being reported on Mark for the 8 shows he did on the West Coast.
Daniel wrote a wonderfully inspiring piece on his coming and goings. The unique factor was that he took time out of his busy tour schedule to actually do a FREE benefit concert. Now that is dedication!
Who would not love this Rasta man? He personifies what he believes in; the message in reggae music being -Love, Peace and Unity - which lays rest for sure at his feet. What can I say about Mark Wonder? He has proven over and over again throughout the years; that he is indeed Reggae's eight wonder of the world. With all the negativity we hear coming out of some of the reggae camps these days.
We can honestly say; with Mark Wonder keeping his camp clean and magnifying emphasis on the ways of the most high; Mark Wonder puts the "P" in positively conscious Reggae sounds. I met Mark back in 2007 at the height of a very emotional time. I found him, to not only be one of the most marvelous inspiring spiritual voices out there, but an amazing person as well. He is one of the few that lives what he sings. When he sings you can feel it in every way, that he is living in the positive. I
t is not hard to be drawn to his loving kindness and the sweet sounds of his voice. What he gives to the fans on stage, he is the same person off. His genuine beam of positive light reflects in whom he really is; inviting all fans personally welcome to know Mark. Mark manifest very special qualities: he's real and untainted by the world. It is not everyday that you come across an artist with the passion in the music that he possesses. Just to reflect on his song "We shall over Come" he sings with an uplifting conviction. That no matter what the ills of the world may be; we shall overcome. It's apparent in the words of the song that the purpose for the lyrics is for the healing.
In his song "Where do we go?" Mark sings where do we go from here? Where do we go right now? When the cry is everywhere, the poor man is in despair, trying to get his share. The cry is everywhere". He goes on to say that his heart cries out, but from his eyes not a single tear. This True Kingston Rastaman is lyrically deep! Mark goes on to say simply "his name is Mark and he can take you through the dark". He is deep, he is humble, and he is strength; without a doubt a Kingston Rasta warrior spiritually refreshing! Hence the 8th wonder of reggae! You might wonder if the number 7 is the spiritual complete number.
Why would I refer to Mark Wonder as the 8th Wonder. Mark as a person is the 8th wonder to me (smile). He completes the Reggae spiritual circle in many a way. He's very talented, very humble and put the most high standards first in all that he does; a true and wonderful reflection. He is truly the bright spiritual light Reggae has been in need of for the last couple months. I have watched in the media recently, my brothers hammered down. Jamaican reggae as we know it; has taken hit after hit in the past months, it's truly distressing. I was asked just the other day whilst doing an anniversary special, interview regarding Mikey Dread's 2nd year anniversary passing.
How I felt about several different situations involving Rasta's and Reggae. As I told the interviewer I can't speak for situations I have not come to know of personally. I can however speak of a few Artists I have no doubt of their sincerity for conscious reggae. The first person name who came to my mind, without a doubt or hesitation was the Kingstonian - Mark Wonder, followed by Montego Bay's - Mackie Conscious and Trelawney's - Tony Culture. There are many, many other conscious Reggae artists out there in Jamaica and abroad; however I was reflecting on some that I know in my personal life to be of high integrity. (Smile).
I find it refreshing to be able to write about an Artist, that is trying his best to keep the positive vibes; in light of what we see going on around us. That someone is Mark Wonder, I have come to know Mark very well and I see he lets nothing and no one gets in his way to produce music that is uplifting to the soul. He is not a Rasta man with a pocket full of money, yet what he has to offer to any audience is the true authentic, hard warming sounds of pure Jamaica Conscious and Sweet Reggae.
That in itself is worth its weight better than gold or silver. It is a joy and pleasure to be in acquaintance of a true reflection of what Jamaican Reggae music encompasses by way of the 8th wonder of the world - Mark Wonder who continue to wow the crowds and amaze new comers alike with his Conscious Reggae beam shining ever so bright!. With that said: Mark Wonder is gearing up for a three month tour of Europe which will be commencing on March 6, 2010.
The itinerary is still being put together as well as other mitigating factors. If you are longing for the real thing, I encourage you all to go out and catch Mark Wonder in concert and see for yourselves what the 8th wonder of reggae is all about! Keep the link of Mark Wonder's tour update, sample his music and video and complete
