Become a Facebook Fan of Yoga Heals Us!

Ok, so I decided to join the social networking world with a Yoga Heals Us Facebook page.  I admit that I had lots of resistance to the whole idea.  And I've discovered that some people have fun interacting in the virtual world.  So, check it out!  It's another way to find out about upcoming classes and workshops.

Cultivate What is Wholesome

Abandon what is unwholesome, oh monks!
One can abandon the unwholesome, oh monks!
If it were not possible, I would not ask you to do so.
If this abandoning of the unwholesome would bring harm and suffering,
I would not ask you to abandon it.
But as the abandoning of the unwholesome brings benefit and happiness,
Therefore, I say, 'Abandon what is unwholesome!'
Cultivate what is wholesome, oh monks.
One can cultivate the wholesome.
If it were not feasible, I would not ask you to do it.
If this cultivation of the wholesome would bring harm and suffering,
I would not ask you to cultivate it.
But as the cultivation of the wholesome brings benefit and happiness,
Therefore, I say, 'Cultivate what is wholesome!'

Message from Karen

Dear Friends,

This newsletter is packed with resources, information, and tools for your journey.  While life itself offers the best teachings, it helps to have a teacher who can guide the way and provide a mirror when needed.  In a certain way, we are all teachers and mirrors for someone.

Recently, I've become very interested in Buddhism, for its philosophy and meditation practices.  Buddhism and Yoga both have deep roots in the ancient spiritual traditions of the Vedas.  The way I see it, Buddhism explores in depth certain aspects of the Yoga tradition which are often minimized, especially in western cultures.

Like a seed that gets blown into different fields, both Yoga and Buddhism have developed in different ways, in accordance with the different cultures and customs in which the practices have flourished.  American Yoga and American Buddhism are practiced differently than Indian Yoga or Tibetan Buddism.  We put our own culture stamp on these practices and make them our own.

These practices have much to offer, even with our American spin.  The lessons we need to learn, our teachers and mirrors, are found in our own lives.  The experience of suffering may seem different because in some ways our definition of suffering limits us.  How can the suffering brought on by limited resources - food, shelter, basic needs - be compared with suffering caused by unlimited resources?  And yet the emotions of suffering are the same - fear, anger, guilt, shame and so on.

Buddhism and Yoga can be said to have the same goal:  to remember who we are; to cultivate moment to moment awareness; to cultivate compassion, equanimity, and peace.  And when we remember who we are we recognize the "other" as ourselves.  In this world of turmoil, this recognition of oneness is what's needed to make world peace a reality and we each need to do this in our own lives.  Each tradition, Buddhism and Yoga, offers tools for the journey and each tradition complements the other.

I've recently been studying with Sharon Salzberg and Joseph Goldstein through an online course in Insight Meditation.  See the side link to www.soundstrue.com for this and other online courses.

This past weekend I participated in an the first Virtual Yoga Conference, also online, through www.yogahub.com.  More than 30 presenters offered one hour workshops, online or by phone, with downloadable handouts.  This conference is stilling running through March 7th (you can download the handouts and listen to all the recorded talks) for only $97 when you use the discount code.  See the sidebar link for details.

Jen Yost will be starting two coaching groups in mid-March - one for women already in business, and one for women just starting a business.

Jen will be doing a free Business Prosperity teleclass on Monday night (3/1) that will offer a bit of a preview for the group coaching program.

I participated in the teleclass that Jen offered in December.  It was great.  It really helped me to think about where I've been, where I want to go, and to get clarity on my next steps.  Check it out.  Details below.

Many years ago, I became friends with Carol Croteau, founder and visionary of the Bethsaida Community, Inc. in Norwich, CT.  The Bethsaida Community, Inc. has provided housing and support services to homeless women for over 23 years.

Their latest initiative is INNER VOICE - a FREE support group for women who are sexual abuse survivors or supporters.  Scroll down for information about this support group and the Bethsaida Community, Inc. including a link to their website and YouTube video.

So, lots of reading material in this newsletter.  Maybe I shouldn't wait so long!

Peace and love to you.  In yoga, Karen

Photographer Wanted

I'm looking for a volunteer to help me create a posture catalog of classical and adaptive yoga postures. The pay is not great but the rewards are many (LOL). I need someone who can be available several times over the next few months for 2 - 4 hours at a time.

If you have a digital camera that takes great photos, all the better. If you have a yoga practice, great. If not, that's fine too. If you have interest and photography skills (amateur or not), let's talk.

Resources for Women in Norwich, CT

Bethsaida Community, Inc. (located in Norwich, CT) has provided housing and support services to homeless women for over 23 years.  The mission is to create a hope, a home, a family for homeless or at risk women, by providing a supportive environment that encourages healing, personal growth and independence.  Please check out the new Welcome Video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSasFvj5T_U

The Katie Blair House program provides transitional housing for homeless women who are at the beginning stage of realizing they need help to change their lives for the better.  Through case management women receive assistance with: educational needs, medical concerns, mental health issues, life skills, support in maintaining sobriety from drugs and alcohol, and help with finding employment.  The house holds 8 women at a time who share all living quarters.  To date, Katie Blair House has helped 220 women.  Please visit http://www.bethsaidact.org/Programs.htm for more information and an application.

The Flora O’Neil apartments opened in January 2006.  Through supportive case management, homeless women (and mothers with children), are able to live independently.  Since inception, this program has helped 12 women.

INNER VOICE is newest Bethsaida program.  INNER VOICE is a FREE support group for women who are sexual abuse survivors or supporters.  The meetings are held the 2nd Thursday of each month from 5 pm to 6 pm at 225 Main Street, Norwich CT (second floor).  While we recommend all survivors receive individual mental health therapy, there is no therapist present during INNER VOICE meetings.  INNER VOICE is built on the premise that survivors and supporters can help each other.  To register for the group, call (860) 886-7511 x 204.
