LIVE FROM DARYL’S HOUSE TRAVELS TO JAMAICA FOR 28th EDITION OF GROUNDBREAKING WEB SERIES FEATURING LEGENDARY TOOTS & THE MAYTALS
Daryl Hall and Toots Hibbert Sing “Funky Kingston,”“Sweet and Dandy,” “Time Tough,” “Reggae Got Soul” and H&O’s “You Make My Dreams Come True”

Daryl Hall took his groundbreaking web series to sunny Jamaica this month, where he hooked up with legendary reggae group Toots and the Maytals for the 28th and most recent edition of Live From Daryl’s House, available starting Feb. 15 at www.lfdh.com.

The shoot took place at the home of famed reggae DJ “Native” Wayne Jobson in Ocho Rios, where Daryl and Toots Hibbert teamed on an incredible eight-song set that featured Toots and the Maytals classics like “Time Tough,” “Reggae Got Soul,” “Funky Kingston,” “Sweet and Dandy,” “Dog War,” “Monkey Man” and “54-46 Was My Number,” a song Toots wrote after serving a prison sentence for marijuana possession in the mid-‘60s, along with a rock steady take on Hall and Oates’ “You Make My Dreams Come True,” recently popularized by its use in the film (500) Days of Summer. As on all episodes, there was a chef preparing food for everyone, in this case, Suzanne Couch, who joins Daryl and Toots for “Sweet and Dandy.” Said Toots about his experience: "I had a great time hanging out with Daryl at Native Wayne’s amazing house in the hills of St. Ann. It was a pleasure working with him and jamming with the band along with my son Hopeton on bass and Suzanne on backing vocals. The jam session was so tight we could have played music all night. I am looking forward to him returning to Jamaica soon.

May all his dreams come true.” Frederick “Toots” Hibbert grew up singing gospel in the church choir, moving to Kingston, Jamaica, when he was 13, where he eventually formed the Maytals, who recorded for legendary Studio One producer Clement “Coxsone” Dodd, accompanied by the famed studio band the Skatalites.

The band went on to work with Prince Buster, Byron Lee and Leslie Kong. The group had a pair of songs—“Sweet and Dandy” and “Pressure Drop”—on the soundtrack to the Jimmy Cliff-starring movie The Harder They Come, which popularized the music in the U.S. and around the world. Daryl raved about the experience: “To be able to perform with one of reggae’s enduring legends in his homeland was certainly a memorable musical experience. Magical collaborations like this are why I started Live From Daryl’s House.”

17TH ROTOTOM SUNSPLASH FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES HOST CITY
Europe's largest reggae festival, the Rototom Sunsplash, is consistently one of the highlights of the summer festival season for reggae fans, attracting well over 100,000 fans each year.

This summer, those hoards of fans will be flocking to Spain, as event organizers have just announced the Mediterranean coastal town of Benicassim as the host site of this year's event. Located in the province of Castellon, Benicassim and its 17,000 inhabitants are no stranger to major music events, playing host to the Fib festival, one of the largest indie rock events in Europe, each summer.

Shortly after the Fib wraps up this year on the 18th of July, the town will have just a brief moment to catch its collective breath before Sunsplash rolls into town on August 21st. As UnitedReggae reports, Sunsplash organizers made a conscious decision this year to move away from Italy, due to political controversy currently engulfing the country. For an even that has become known as an ambassador for human rights, sustainable development, and world peace, organizers considered it inappropriate to hold the event in Italy.

According to a spokesperson for the event, it was decided that recent political and social developments in Italy have underscored a growing "intolerance" towards "any model of society that values different cultures and multi-racialism."

Change of locale aside, this year's festival is largely shaping up to be similar to those in years past. In addition to the traditional concert format, Sunsplash will feature meetings, debates, film screenings, meditation seminars, and holistic therapy courses, among other events.

According to an event spokesperson, "The objectives of this new phase are to remain true to its history despite the new location, bringing the Spanish reggae scene opportunity to consolidate while continuing to bridge the gap between Europe and the Caribbean. This will definitely be favored by to the fact Spain enjoys close ties with the Americas where reggae music already has a strong presence in the cross-Atlantic Spanish speaking countries." Pre-sale tickets for the 17th Rototom Sunsplash, as well as a full list of the initial lineup, will both be available very soon.

....Was given this sad news yesterday that a legend in the reggae industry Jeff "Bigga" Woodworth passed away this weekend in Sacramento of a heart attack. Long time promoter, friend, family of all the Northern CA reggae scene for many years. He brought many artists to Cali in the late 70s thru the 80's and into the early 90's. He has worked with every major reggae act in those years and was respected throughout the world and worked with and mentored many in the reggae scene. I knew Bigga for many years - after his baseball career- as we both worked in the school system and loved Reggae music. He brought many reggae artists that never came to Cali till he got them here, and he worked with all the major fests and venues in No. Cal. He was known in JA and Cali and was loved by all and he will be remembered always.... Jah rest his soul One Love -Al

...Really sad, I don't think there was anything bad anyone could say about him. Just really nice memories of Bigga and Belle. -Tullah

One of my my favorite memories of Bigga was his annual early-morning calls to me on my birthday - and I mean early! He wanted to be the first one to wish me Happy Birthday each year. -Kaati

THE 14TH EPISODE OF NICHOLAS Da SILVA'S GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES 'DREAD AND ALIVE' FEATURING DREW MCINTOSH: JAMAICAN SUPER HERO
Dread & Alive....is an ongoing graphic novel series about Jamaican Super Hero Drew McIntosh. If you missed any episodes, click here to read:

Chapter Four

Shortly after dawn, the McIntosh family began their journey to the Cockpit Country.  They headed down route A1 towards Mo'Bay, tossing from side to side as the vehicle reacted to the ruts and bumps in the road. Philip, knowing the probable heat of mid-day, was dressed in safari bush pants and matching vest, and although he started out in good spirits, he was now having some difficulty trying to read a road map while maneuvering the four-wheel drive along the winding two-lane road that passed as a highway.
His deteriorating mood went unnoticed. Maria, dressed in similar comfortable attire, sat in the passenger's seat and was far more interested in her husband's unsafe road habits than she was in the map. To take her mind off his terrible driving, she fiddled with the radio dial, adjusting it from one station to another, searching for a song that satisfied her. Ironically, she came across a station playing Bob Marley's "Satisfy My soul."  She settled back in the seat and gave her attention to the music.  Drew, alone in the backseat and enjoying the scenic ride, was completely unaware of any tension in his parents.
Philip looked up from the map to check his location on the road. "According to this map, there should be a left turn just up ahead."
"Watch the road, Philip. We want to get there in one piece," Maria said, scowling at her husband.
Philip chuckled. “Don’t tell me you’re scared of my driving."
"I'm use to your driving but I don’t think the other motorists are.” Maria said, staring into her side-view mirror.
"What other motorist?" One glance in the rear-view mirror and Philip saw exactly what his wife was talking about -- traffic was building up behind him. "Uh oh," he said as he glanced at the speedometer. He was traveling well below the speed limit.
As he accelerated, several cars including a tour bus and a moped carrying a young couple, sped by blaring their horns and screaming obscenities.
"Yeah, mon!" Philip laughed, honking his horn and waving back at the drivers.
"You’re too much," Maria laughed, shaking her head.
Philip continued along the highway, driving for several miles until he came across a small sign, barely visible off the side of the road.  As he approached it, he noticed that it was missing a few letters but he was still able to make out the words inscribed on it: COCKPIT COUNTRY. Philip slowed the Land Rover and made a left turn off the main highway down the narrow, dirt road.  When he pushed his foot against the gas pedal, plumes of dust kicked up behind the Land Rover.  He glanced into the rearview mirror and watched the main highway disappear behind them as it became shrouded in the thick, dense foliage surrounding them.
For the next fifteen miles, the road was brutal, bouncing the truck from side to side, and the McIntosh family with it. The unpaved road wound upward, causing the Land Rover's engine to labor as it climbed the rugged terrain. Philip gripped the steering wheel with both hands to prevent the vehicle from leaving the rock road. Outside the truck, dangling branches and vines slapped and scrapped against the windows of the four-wheel drive.
"You sure this is the right road?" Maria asked, clutching the safety bar.
"Yeah, this is the right road but I don’t remember it being so rough.”
Maria look back at Drew. "You okay back there?"
"Uh huh!" Drew said enthusiastically, enjoying the rough ride.
Philip glanced over his shoulder. "We’re almost there, Boy. Just hang tight!"
            Drew smiled at his dad.
"How much further to go?" Maria asked.
"We not too far now, " Philip said, pointing to a small clearing directly ahead of them. "Look over there.” He accelerated to make up the distance. When they reached the clearing, they were met by a wall of dense foliage.
     "This is it?" Maria asked.
"Yep! We here!" Philip nodded his head. "This is the end of the line. We travel on foot from here."

MESSANJAH SELAH IN KAUAI HAWAII TONIGHT

REGGAE MAN AT HEART - SYDNEY BASED FIJI RASTAMAN, KEPONE FIU HAS JUST RELEASED A SINGLE TITLED 'JUST BECAUSE'

In what may possibly be a first for any Fijian artist - the single was released a week ago on i-Tunes.

"We're living in the fast food generation, everybody wants something and they want it now. I-Tunes is the musical outlet for song junkies - it gives listeners the choice of buying a single or the album - whatever they prefer - kind of like the good old days when we used to buy one roll from Gupswami's store in Bagasau because we couldn't afford the whole packet," he laughed.

Fiu, a former Dudley High School student, last visited the country in 2007 when he brought his group Cool Runnings for a series of shows around the country.

Cool Runnings was formed in Sydney in 2003 and grew to become one of Australia's most sought after reggae acts. Aiding and abetting the reggae man is fellow Fijian, lyrical toaster - George Thomas, who goes by the tag Ltl GZeus.

The former Suva Grammar School student is making his mark on the Sydney music scene and has one solo album titled 'Under Ground Legends' under his belt. "Ltl GZeus was supposed to join Cool Runnings when I brought the band to Fiji in August 2007 but it didn't eventuate because he was in the process of recording his album at the time. I had to wait two years for this collaboration and I'm glad I did because this guy is out there," said Fiu. 'Just Because' is a remake of the reggae classic 'Just Because I Come From The Islands' which was a radio mainstay in the late 80's and early 90's.

The debut single features lyrical toasting by Ltl GZeus, Chilean drummer Carlos Adura, Paul Verma on keyboards and Fiu handling bass duties. The keyboards, drums and bass were recorded at Verma's parents place in Castle Cove, Sydney.

"I've got so much respect for Paul's dad, Vinay Verma, because we were making so much noise upstairs from his home-based office. He never once complained, the only words we heard from him were words of encouragement," said the bass man. Once the live instruments were tracked, Ltl GZeus laid down his vocals and Paul and Fiu recorded the chorus harmonies before the band moved into Chippendale Studios for mixing.

"Ltl GZeus was like a man possessed- he laid down 10 vocal tracks! We then went to Chippendale so that Paul could access Pro-Tools for mixing. Once we were happy with the mix, we took it down to Studio 301 for mastering," Fiu said. The reggae bass player who is also known as the businessman who brought in the Zimbabwean Bhundu Boys to Fiji in 1993, said that a lot of money was saved because they did most of the groundwork in-house. "If we did the whole song in a studio- it would have cost us thousands. We're really happy with the outcome and have pretty much agreed that the whole album will be recorded this way," enthused Fiu. 'Just Because' reminisces about life in Fiji.

The lyrics are written from the point of view of someone who is residing in another country but keeps himself grounded by keeping it real and chooses never to forget home. It also speaks of happiness in the simple things in life and memories of songs playing on the radio in days gone by.

Despite the fact that he currently resides in Sydney Australia, Kepone Fiu's roots are firmly entrenched in Tuakoi village Motusa, Rotuma and Charles Street in Bagasau, Suva where the Rastaman spent his early years.

Fiu is a reggae man at heart. He has played with some of Sydney's premier reggae outfits like Calabash alongside fellow Fijian Mansus Knight and Two Tribes with former Rootstrata drummer Kitione Mateyawa (Kit-Kat). The release of Cool Runnings debut single marks a significant point in the career of a band that began in 2003 and Fiu promises that this is 'just the beginning'.

"I sincerely hope everyone likes what they hear. This is the first but certainly won't be the last. Music is the food of love and the food of life because it feeds the soul. We hope that 'Just Because' brings happiness, laughter and a smile or two in Fiji and the South Pacific. Jah Bless and One Love," he said.

CHEF MAYRA’S - 7 ARTHRITIS MYTHS
A disease as common as arthritis is bound to spawn some myths. Here, a look at the reality behind some commonly held beliefs:

Myth 1: Arthritis happens only to old people.
The truth: Some forms of arthritis do mainly affect elderly people, including the most common, osteoarthritis. Yet many types can affect younger people, and joint injuries at any age can lead to osteoarthritis. Currently more than half of the population with arthritis is under 65. Juvenile arthritis can begin in children as young as infants and toddlers and affects an estimated 294,000 Americans under age 18. Other forms of arthritis, mainly auto immune conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, Reiter's syndrome and ankylosing spondylitis, usually strike in middle or early adulthood.

Myth 2: It's an inevitable part of aging.
The truth: Thirty percent of people older than age 70 have no x-ray evidence of osteoarthritis, the common "wear and tear" form of the disease, according to the American College of Rheumatology. For the 70 percent of people who do show the joint deterioration of osteoarthritis in x-rays, half of them never develop symptoms.

Myth 3: Weather affects symptoms.
The truth: Many people with arthritis believe that cold and dampness can set off joint symptoms. Indeed, according to the Arthritis Foundation, nearly half of arthritis patients think they can predict the weather! Yet the studies have been inconclusive. But don't cancel your Florida vacation plans yet; milder weather may encourage people with arthritis to be more active, and that has been shown to help.

Myth 4: Exercise makes arthritis worse.
The truth: Regular moderate exercise can help prevent and treat arthritis. Exercise promotes function and mobility, controls weight and strengthens the muscles that support the joints. Though you may want to avoid high-impact exercises (like running) if your knees bother you, low-impact exercises such as walking, tai chi or aquatics are all beneficial. Talk to your physician about the best exercise regimen for you. Pool (aqua) therapy has been shown to cause improvement in mobility in arthritic joints.

Myth 5: "Nightshade" vegetables should be avoided.

The truth: Some people claim that vegetables in the "nightshade" family (potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant and peppers) cause arthritis to flare up. However, none about these associations have been proven. If a certain food seems to negatively affect you or your family, try to avoid it and see if that helps. Otherwise, follow the Arthritis Foundation recommendations for a diet rich in vegetables and fruits, including tomatoes.

Myth 6: Diet can't help or hurt arthritis.
The truth: The Arthritis Foundation recommends a diet low in calories and saturated fats, rich in "good" fats found in fish and olive oil and nuts, and full of vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Some research suggests that carotenoids (found in orange and yellow vegetables and fruits) and cruciferous vegetables (the broccoli and cabbage family) may be particularly effective at protecting joints. Gout, which causes painful arthritis attacks, has multiple dietary triggers, including many types of meat and seafood and alcohol.

Myth 7: Cracking your knuckles causes arthritis.
The truth: Despite this urban legend, several studies over the years have found no association between knuckle cracking and arthritis. Persistent knuckle cracking may eventually affect your grip strength or, at the very least, annoy your coworkers.

SWAZILAND WILL NOT HOST ONE LOVE REGGAE FESTIVAL
By Nokukhanya Aimienoho

The One Love Reggae Festival will not be held in Swaziland this year. The festival which was launched last year by Makhulu Concerts and Café Lingo will be held in Maputo. However, Café Lingo isn’t involved this year.

This was announced by Makhulu Concerts Director Rodger Dunn and confirmed by Café Lingo’s Tanya Aab. Similar to last year, the festival will be held on May 1.

During an interview, Dunn simply said it wouldn’t make business sense to host the festival in the country.

“We identified Mozambique as a suitable location for a festival of this nature and magnitude”, Dunn said. Aab agreed with Dunn and said the business community as well as music lovers would be more receptive towards a festival of this scale.

International artists incorporated into the festival’s line-up last year included 340ML, Jah Seed and Admiral, Ras Tony & Maputoland, Word, Sound and Power, Axicundos, Centraline and Short Cirkit amongst others. Multitudes converged at the old Greyhound stadium to witness a musical spectacular.

Music lovers travelled from all over the SADC region to attend the festival. The One Love Reggae Festival was organised against the backdrop of instilling love and unity amongst the people of the region in times of difficulty.

Not only that, it also sought to bring to focus the plight of many orphaned children in the country and their immediate needs for survival. In fulfillment of this quest, 20% of the profits generated from proceeds during the festival were channelled towards All Out Africa Foundation to assist disadvantaged children with their school expenses.

On another note, the Swaziland National Council of Arts & Culture (SNCAC) partnered with Makhulu Concerts and Café Lingo last year.

The national arts body’s involvement in the festival was to identify local acts which can be incorporated into the festival’s lineup.

Groups under the Association of Swaziland Theatre Groups (ASTG) and the Swaziland Traditional Music Association (STAMA) were eventually chosen to perform.

The One Love Reggae Festival organisers believe Reggae music is stereotyped in Swaziland.

That is just one of the many reasons the organisers felt it would make business sense to host the festival in the kingdom.

During an interview, Café Lingo’s Tanya Aab who was involved in the festival last year noted that securing sponsorship to host the festival last year was an uphill struggle.

“What we noticed is that Reggae music is just stereotyped.

Companies wouldn’t like to associate themselves with a festival of this nature. Perhaps, if it was a Gospel or Jazz festival, we would have gotten a better response”, she said.

The stereotypes that exist about Reggae musicians is that they smoke marijuana just to mention a few.

Although, Café Lingo isn’t involved in the festival this year, she further said that Mozambican companies have shown a willingness to come aboard. She added that they had dig into their pockets to host the festival last year.

“We made a loss and we didn’t get the support we had anticipated”, she went on to say.

Makhulu Concerts Director Rodger Dunn said it was unfortunate that they had to reach this decision but added they were working on hosting a festival of a much smaller scale than the One Love Reggae Festival in 2011 or even 2012.

MISHKA INFUSES SOME OF HIS MAINSTREAM MELODIES ON TWO OF THE TRACKS ON THE MUCH-ANTICIPATED SOPHOMORE ALBUM

Setting the tone for the self-described 'album of movement,' the lead single 'Bittersweet' began as a studio experiment before evolving into a musical space that surprised even its creator.

'When I brought the song to the band it was extremely raw-just a few chords and a couple lyrics played at a modest tempo,' says Mishka. 'But as we started jamming on it, it started to move into an up-tempo track like I've never recorded before-a place, musically, that is brand new to me.'  Two of the tracks on 'Talk About', 'Stars Will Be Shining' and album opener 'Give Them Love,' are the product of collaboration with super producer Butch Walker.

PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release:

PACERS FOR PEACE MUSIC FESTIVAL BENEFITS GRANT HIGH SCHOOL IN SACRAMENTO ON SATURDAY, MARCH 6 WITH AN ALL-AGES REGGAE DANCE FEATURING PATO BANTON, ETHNIC DANCERS, DRUM TROUPES AND MUCH MORE!

HASO Live, Doublelion and Grant High School in Sacramento are hosting the very first high school benefit to raise funds for low-income senior class students. This is not your average cake sale fundraiser, rather this is a world-class reggae dance party that is open to students and to the public.

The event is on Saturday, March 6 at Grant High School, 1400 Grand Avenue in Sacramento from 2pm – 9pm. More than a dozen bands and ethnic dance and drum troupes will be performing and tickets are only $10 in advance and $15 at the door.

Organizer, Denise Carter of HASO Live says, “This fundraiser is the beginning of a new fund. The proceeds will be helping the Senior Class at Grant High School to afford caps gowns, announcement, senior trips and what ever is needed to help these kids to graduate.

A lot of kids are deciding to not graduate because their families cannot afford the expenses. Senior year is on the most expensive years in high school; so to stop the kids from dropping out or opting to just get a GED; HASO Live in collaboration with Doublelion Band and Grant High School, are working together to make a change in the graduation rate.

SYDNEY BASED FIJI RASTAMAN, KEPONE FIU HAS JUST RELEASED A SINGLE TITLED 'JUST BECAUSE' UNDER THE BANNER OF MR KEPONE AND LTL GZEUS

                                 ROOTMANTIS BIOGRAPHY
Rootmantis (Christened Tamunobelema Abaku) was born on February 14, 1965. He is from Okrika in the Wakirike Local Government Area of Rivers State of Nigeria, West Africa.

Following the death of his father just before he was born, his mother and uncle were able to provide him with basic education up till high school level. At school, he excelled in the arts like Music studies, Literature, and Social Studies. He was always entertaining his friends and school peers with every little opportunity he had. As a result, he got very significant encouragement from friends, family, and school teachers alike, to consider music. He did not give it a second thought, and went for it.

In the early Nineties, he did a couple of unreleased solo tunes that got him very little or no attention from listeners and Reggae personalities in Nigeria and around Africa. But 1994 was a different year, as he recorded and released his debut album titled “Universal Love”. It’s a Six-track album produced by Chux Onuoha, and Recorded & Mixed at Top Raves recording studios, Aba, Abia State, Nigeria. It was an instant success, and it launched him into the West African Reggae stratosphere.

As a result of this brief success, he did a couple of collaborations with several other local artistes. The success was short-lived due to bureaucratic bottlenecks in the form of a perceived lack of sincerity on the part of managers, promoters, labels that led to internal conflicts and an eventual peaceful and amicable parting of ways. He literarily disappeared into oblivion shortly afterwards only to re-surface in the early 2000s.

Since then, he had enjoyed a very fruitful affiliation with the most prominent Reggae playing Radio Station South-South of Nigeria, Radio Rivers 99.1 FM, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria.

On October 24, 2006, Rootmantis and the Radio Reggae host, Selecta Mowon Ernest Mbikan, amongst others, engaged Frankie Paul on an on-air interview via telephone conferencing made possible by Frankie Paul’s then manager Gwen Hylton, who incidentally, is the CEO of Rude Boy & Music Entertainment Company, based in Detroit, Michigan USA.  A Marketing & Promotions company that also handle artists royalty-rights and other services. Some of the artists she had worked with at different times include Derrick Irie, Warrior King, and Glen Washington etc.

He also performed at local talent shows and festivals in Nigeria. Rootmantis, in conjunction with Iroko Sound System of Port Harcourt, and Amy Sounds Productions of Bonny Island, performed at the “Bonny Reggae Festival” in Bonny Island, Rivers State, Nigeria. In that festival, he performed alongside London based Afrikan Simba, who is currently the Voice of Africa Radio host, the first licenced African radio station in the UK, which Simba manages. It Broadcasts on 94.3FM in London and www.voiceofafricaradio.com.  Rootmantis was the toast of the festival, and was immediately booked for the 2004 “Bonny Unity Concert”, which he also took by storm.

Currently, he is being managed by US based Thoroughbred Music Productions / Sound System group. The outfit runs the Reggae Show at Radio Free Lexington, WRFL 88.1 FM,
Lexington, Kentucky, USA. Rootmantis’ tunes enjoy an exclusive play both on air and at clubs alike.

His most recent work is two, yet to be released albums titled “Safe N’ Sound”, and “Rhythm Balm”.
Both albums are exclusively played and sampled on pre-release by the Thoroughbred music DJs.

Prayer for Peace - World Peace
As long as mankind is running the world, there will be no real and lasting peace. Evil is real and runs rampant in the hearts of men who do not follow Jah. All of us have been born with a sin nature and until we atone, we will have disorder, hostilities, and war mongers. "There is no peace for the wicked (Isaiah 57:21)"
