THE AMERICAN CINEMIQUE HONORS JAMAICA'S MOST INFLUENTIAL FILMKAKER
Perry Henzell Tribute American Cinematheque at the Egyptian Theater

Perry Henzell has been called "the most important filmmaker to emerge from the Caribbean." His landmark film "The Harder They Come" was responsible for introducing Reggae music to the world. With unique insight, visual sense and original thinking, he forever changed the way we look at things. Through his films, stage plays, and novels, the worldwide impact of his work continues to grow. The American Cinematheque salutes the memory of Perry Henzell with an evening dedicated to his feature films.

Friday March 19th at 6712 Hollywood Blvd at Highland

6:30 - 7:45  Courtyard Reception featuring Red Stripe Beer and other sponsors. Gathering of Reggae and film personalities, invited guests, and ticket holders. Featuring DJ spinning the music of Jimmy Cliff and "The Harder They Come" to celebrate Jimmy Cliff's induction into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

8:00 PM  Introduction and presentation of special honorary certificate to Henzell family (by well known film personality.)

Double Feature: NO PLACE LIKE HOME, 2008, IFM, 95 min. Dir. Perry Henzell. Following the success of THE HARDER THEY COME, Perry Henzell directed part two of his Jamaican trilogy, which follows New York producer Susan as she ventures into the Jamaican countryside (reversing the country-to-city trajectory of the first film) in search of a runaway actress. After working on the film throughout the 1970s, Henzell discovered that the footage had been lost; fortunately, it was found 30 years later, and now Henzell's follow-up to his breakthrough classic can be seen on the big screen!

With music by Bob Marley & The Wailers, Toots & The Maytals and Peter Tosh and introducing Grace Jones and P.J. Soles. [SD/DMX Digital Cinema Presentation]

Discussion in between films with Justine Henzell (Perry's daughter), producer David Garonzik, P.J. Soles (actress), Arthur Gorson (director’s friend and producer), Roger Steffens (reggae historian) and special surprise guests. Moderated by "Native" Wayne Jobson.

THE HARDER THEY COME, 1972, International Films, 120 min. (New 35mm Print) The worlds first contact with Jamaica and reggae music, before Bob Marley broke big and England fell in love with the sound. Originally released by Roger Corman it became a midnight movie sensation and inspired The Clash’s "The Gun’s of Brixton". Reggae singer Jimmy Cliff stars as a country boy IVAN who travels to the big city with dreams of recording a song. Turning to a life of crime in desperation Ivan achieves his dream of being famous as his song becomes a big hit and he is Jamaica's most wanted man. Director Perry Henzell’s masterpiece uses this odyssey as the basis for a forceful study of corruption of all kinds, all set to a fantastic soundtrack.

...Maria smiled. “I’m Maria and this is our boy, Drew."
Drew, leaning against the back of his mother's seat, waved hello.
"How are you?" Cubbenah asked, nodding a greeting to mother and son.
As Cubbenah and his men headed to the back of the truck, Philip spoke to his wife.
"You and Drew should get out and stretch your legs.  We’ve got a long journey ahead up us.”
"Don’t you need help with the backpacks?"
"I don’t think so," Philip said, staring back at the three men, watching them momentarily as they removed some of the gear from the truck. "Once we're packed, it should be an easy trip through the Cockpit Country."
Philip again glanced at the warriors, this time seeing a different picture. One of the porters had managed to incorrectly strap the pack to his body, causing him to fall flat on his back.  He was now struggling like an upended turtle, but to no avail.
Philip could not contain the laughter. "On second thought, this might take longer than expected."
Maria looked into the rearview mirror and saw the man on the ground, struggling with the backpack. "You got that right," she said, joining in the laughter. "Come along, Drew. Let’s get out and stretch our limbs for a few minutes."
As Philip went to the aid of the warrior, Maria and Drew got out of the truck, glad to be able to stretch their limbs. Drew mimicked his mother's every move, first extending his arms high overhead, then moving his body from side to side. When they were refreshed, curiosity lured them to the entrance to the Cockpit Country.  Standing in front of the large sign, Maria looked over the strange names of the towns inscribed on planks that pointed in different directions.
She read some of the names aloud. "Quick Step ... District of Look Behind ... Land of Yu No Call Mi No Come!"  She looked back at her husband, concern showing in her eyes. "Maybe this isn’t such a good idea," she said, softly.
Drew, standing beside his mother, tugged at her shirt, frightened by her comment.
"Don’t you worry," Maria said, tousling his dreadlocks. ‘I’m just playing. I’m sure we’ll be just fine."
Back at the Land Rover, Philip had successfully managed to help the Maroons into the straps of their backpacks, leaving four water canteens and one pack for himself. He gave Cubbenah a much smaller one to carry. Philip then backed the Land Rover away from the clearing and into a section of high grass. Removing a small axe from his backpack, he proceeded to chop some large, dangling branches from the surrounding trees. With Cubbenah's help they gathered the branches, using them to shield the Land Rover; therefore, hiding it from view. Once the task was completed, Philip slipped into his backpack and called the group together.
"You ready, Drew?" he asked, crouching in front of Drew so he could read the expression in his eyes.  Proudly, he saw no fear.
            "I'm ready," Drew answered, eagerly.
"Now listen up. I want you to stay close to your mother and me," Philip continued. "We don’t want to lose you in there."
            "I will," Drew said.
"This is for you," Philip said, removing a water canteen from around his shoulder to place around Drew's neck. "There’s plenty of water to get you to the village."
"Thank you," Drew said, nodding with wisdom beyond his years.
Philip ran his hand over his son's dreadlocks before rising to stand beside his wife. "You ready?"
Maria took a deep breath.  "More than I’ll ever be," she said confidently.
Philip slipped on his backpack, adjusted the weight, and turned to Cubbenah. "Okay, my friend. Let’s go."

BRINGING REGGAE REGGAE TO READING, ENGLAND

By Amanda Dellor
BBC Berkshire Reporter
Levi Roots
Levi Roots combines music with food

Levi Roots became a millionaire after two entrepreneurs from the BBC programme 'Dragons' Den' invested in his Reggae Reggae sauce.
Now Levi has combined his two loves of food and music to go on the road, with a show called 'The Levi Roots Red Hot Experience Tour'.

It kicked off in Reading and Levi told BBC Berkshire all about it. "I'm doing the first merger of music and food on stage. It's great that I've chosen Reading as the first place. "If I mess it up I'll blame Reading!

"I'm trying to merge my two passions which is music and food which I think is why Peter Jones and Richard Farleigh wanted to invest in me on Dragons' Den.
I put the music into the food and I think if I'd have come up with anything else I wouldn't be here now. It's great that I'm now indulging in both my passions.

So how does it work?
"I think people need to be inspired by different things and it's not just the music that will inspire people it will be the cooking, the interactive element and the inspirational chat.

"It's all about the focus and the passion. I tell people if you have that, you too can be a dragon slayer.

"It's a unique tour, it's never been done before, and people get free food at the end of the night!

"I want to spread the word that if a black Brixtonian Rastafarian can make it with just a sauce, then you can make it too."

CHEF MAYRA'S - THE NEW FOUR FOOD GROUPS
Many of us grew up with the USDA’s old Basic Four food groups, first introduced in 1956. The passage of time has seen an increase in our knowledge about the importance of fiber, the health risks of cholesterol and fats, and the
disease-preventive power of many nutrients found exclusively in plant-based foods.

We also have discovered that the plant kingdom provides excellent sources of the nutrients once only associated with meat and dairy products—namely,
protein and calcium.

The USDA revised its recommendations with the Food Guide Pyramid, a plan that reduced the prominence of animal products and vegetable fats.

FRUIT, LEGUMES, WHOLE GRAINS, VEGETABLES.

Fruit
3 or more servings a day
Fruits are rich in fiber, vitamin C, and beta-carotene. Be sure to include at
least one serving each day of fruits that are high in vitamin C—citrus fruits, melons, and strawberries are all good choices.

Choose whole fruit over fruit juices, which do not contain very much fiber.
Serving size: 1 medium piece of fruit • ½ cup cooked fruit • 4 ounces
juice

Legumes
2 or more servings a day
Legumes, which is another name for beans, peas, and lentils, are all
good sources of fiber, protein, iron, calcium, zinc, and B vitamins. This
group also includes chickpeas, baked and refried beans, soymilk, tempeh,
and texturized vegetable protein.

Serving size: ½ cup cooked beans •
4 ounces tofu or tempeh • 8 ounces
soymilk

The major killers of Americans—heart disease, cancer, and stroke—have a dramatically lower incidence among people consuming primarily plant-based diets. Weight problems—a contributor to a host of health problems—can also be brought under control by following the New Four Food Group recommendations.

Try the New Four Food Groups and discover a healthier way to live!

Whole Grains
4 or more servings a day
Vegetables are packed with nutrients; they provide vitamin C, beta-carotene,
ribofl avin, iron, calcium, fiber, and other nutrients.

Vegetables
Dark green leafy vegetables such as broccoli, collards, kale, mustard and turnip greens, chicory, or bok choy are especially good sources of these important nutrients.

Dark yellow and orange vegetables such as carrots, winter squash, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin provide extra beta-carotene.

JAMAICA JOURNAL — FIRST EDITION ON JAMAICAN MUSIC LAUNCHED
source: BASIL WALTERS Observer staff reporter

A small gathering of mainly invited guests was on hand at Devonshire, Devon House last Sunday afternoon to witness the curtains being drawn down on Reggae Month and celebrate the growing recognition of the contribution of our music to the building of the nation.

Two special acts which took place were the official launch of the music edition of Jamaica Journal and the handing over of the Dermott Hussey's Collection to the Jamaica Music Museum.

A rather glossy publication with large images of Queen Ifrica and Etana on the cover over the caption Lionesses on the Rise, this issue of Jamaica Journal is largely examining various aspects of Jamaican music from its folk origin to its current popular incarnation.

Dermott Hussey (left) receiving a copy of the Jamaica Journal from Vivian Crawford, Director of the Institute of Jamaica.
1/2
"This issue presents healthy analysis of the issues and trends in Jamaican music from the cover page to the back page. I congratulate the Institute of Jamaica and the Jamaica Journal for providing this platform for concentrated discussion on the music. I urge you to continue on this path. This is the first music issue, let it not be the last," the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Olivia Babsy Grange, stated as she brought greetings to the occasion.

Stressing that downtown Kingston is the future cultural mecca of Jamaica, Minister Grange announced that a permanent home for the museum of Jamaican music will soon be established there, if everything goes according to plan. She also stated that her ministry has recently received equipment to digitise the entire collection of the music. The minister with responsibility for entertainment said she is determined to have a joint relationship with all the cultural entities that have collections of the music. These include the JBC (Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation) archives, the National Library, the JCDC.

She congratulated Dermott Hussey on making his important collection available to the Music Museum. "This collection of records, films, and documents will be an invaluable part of the museum which is still in its embryonic stages," she declared.
After the formalities, Hussey told the gathering inclusive of special guest, veteran double bassist Lloyd Brevette of the legendary Skatalites' fame, that Jamaican music is the greatest untold story.

"We pay the arts such little respect, not recognising this is where our greatest achievement lies," Hussey told the Sunday Observer. "In 47 years of independence," the music historian added, "in my estimation, the best success story is the globalisation of reggae music and the transformative nature. The way that it has transformed other people not only into belief, but into practice."

The experienced broadcaster who hosts a programme on Newstalk called Riffin and is currently employed as the Programme Director of XM Satellite Radio's 101 Channel The Joint, has been a collector of music for over 50 years.
"Well, y'know I've been wondering what I was going to do with this enormous collection of music. Presenting it to a school of music, in a sense is too limited because you deny a broader interest in music than just the musician person... So I thought the Institute, the fact that it has a hundred years behind it and also the whole idea of a music museum. It's taking a long time to come but it hasn't diminish the importance of having such an institution," said the 2008 Musgrave Gold Medallist for his service to music and media.

LUTAN FYAH SET TO BLAZE IN 2010
By Ra-Umi Alkebu-lan
With a good performance at Follow Di Arrow show held recently at James Bond Beach in Oracabessa, St. Mary, Jamaica, Lutan Fyah not only gave an electrifying performance, but ignited the place as the audience lit their lighters and blazed their aerosol spray cans.

Lutan Fyah set the pace for what can be expected of him in 2010. The singer had to dig deep in his musical arsenal to entertain the vociferous dancehall enthusiasts who were in their element.

Lutan Fyah  entered the stage at 2:40am dressed in a green army jacket, blue jean pants, black turban and Black Sneakers. The audience roared with  approval from the “get go” has he sang “Whole heap dem caan believe man say Rastafari now.”

He did a tight and spicey set which included hit songs such as Rasta Still De Bout, St Jago De la Vega, Save The Juvenile, Falling For You, Informer, Mightier Than Them All and the recently release Jail. Currently he is getting heavy rotation on Fm Radio since the release of these singles “Jail” produced by Chester Walker and Mooni, which document his wrongful arrest, and his subsequent exoneration in a Jamaican court.  “Looking Hot “(Boops Rhythm) produced by Shane Brown, “Mighty Mouth” produced by DJ Neil, “Give Thanks” featuring I Wayne and “One Life” produced by Chester Walker  for the label Very Hugh.   Born Anthony Martin, Lutan Fyah hails from the community of Thompson Pen, Spanish Town, St. Catherine.

A graduate of St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS), Martin juggled academics, music and sports. He has three passes at the CXC level and had set his sights on becoming an Architect.  He also played Manning Cup football for STATHS and in the National Premier League for Hazard United and Constant Spring. Music has been an integral part of his life, which he first found through his grandfather's Black Universe sound system in Thompson Pen where he got his early exposure.

He first came to prominence with the song “There Is No Peace In Spanish Town”. With four number one singles to his credit namely “Rasta Still Deh Bout”, done in tandem with Josie Mel, “Save The Juvenile”, “St. Jago De La Vega” and recently “Falling For You”.  His albums to date are “Dem No Know Dem Self” (Minor7Flat5, 2004), “Time and Place” (Lustre Kings, 2005) “Phantom War” (Greensleeves, 2006) “Healthy Lifestyle” (VP, 2006) and “Africa” Double Disc (2b1, 2008). Now surrounded by a competent management team,  he is set to dominate the music scene locally and to expand his fan base internationally.

He recently returned from Gambia, Africa where he performed to sold-out venues and was well received. He is booked to return later in the year. He left the island recently for the United States after which he moves to Europe, where he is scheduled to perform in Holland, France and Germany. A yet-to-be named album will be released later this year.

NEW REGGAE ALBUMS SLIPPING OUT OF BILLBOARD TOP 10
source: STEVEN JACKSON Observer writer

NEW 2010 releases are not remaining in the top 10 of the Billboard Reggae Albums, whilst aged albums hover effortlessly.

Six of the eight new albums that entered top 10 since January were either booted or trending down. Bob Marley and the Wailers Dub 1 debuted at one but quickly slipped out of the top 10 within two weeks. Crucial Times by Sizzla Kalonji debuted at five then bailed out the top 10 within two weeks. Now and Forever by Sanchez debuted at 10 but didn't last another week in the top 10. Guy With A Guitar by Mishka peaked at four then dropped to 14 the following week.

Albums trending out the top 10 include Escape From Babylon To The Kingdom of Zion by Alborosie which debuted last week at six, now at seven. Harder Shade Of Black, a compilation of various Artists debuted at eight this week. The two albums which have shown some measure of resilience include The Green by The Green Band, currently at three having debuted four weeks ago; and Bring Back The Days by Rebel Souljahz spent 10 weeks in top 10 peaking at four.

Light by Matisyahu currently tops the chart with B for Bob by Bob Marley and the Wailers at two, both albums were released 27 and 36 weeks ago respectively. Seventy per cent of the albums on Billboard's Reggae Albums Top 10 are older than six months.

There is actually an album on the charts for one-year and a half (74 weeks) -- Greatest Hits by UB40. Music stakeholders have previously complained that Billboard charts were not reflecting the full talent of the industry and that it was also being restricted by major reggae labels.

WADADLI MUSIC FEST. ANTIGUA THE PLACE TO BE. APRIL 24TH, 2010

Being a non-Jamaican Reggae/Dancehall artist explains the hard work, effort, and courage to be able to stand out amongst the veterans of the game. Bringing his own versatile flow combined with the elements of dancehall & Reggae makes him the Island Kid.

Dion Humphreys better known as The Island Kid or Mega D is one of the most esteemed names in Holland as an extraordinary Dancehall Artist & Entertainer.
Born on February 25 1981, on the Caribbean Island of St Maarten, where he also lived with his parents, Jennifer Daniel a modest and loving mother From St.Eustatius, and father Donald Humphreys a former "Calypsonian" better known as "The Deceiver" from Antigua. At the tender age of six, Mega D parents separated and his mom returned to Statia, struggling with three kids on her own, was not an easy task for a young single mom.

At a puerile age Mega D was always into Music, Reading, Writing Poems, but very active and energetic always looking for something of the unusual to do. Influenced by likes of entertainers such as krissKross, Lil Vicious, Bounty killer and Scared Dem Crew the passion for entertaining was not only a desire but also the endowment that he was born with being part of a musical inclined family from both sides.

While listening to other dancehall entertainers Mega caught himself chanting lyrics from Bounty, Scared Dem crew, Spragga and many others. At school, Mega would be topping the biggest clash down with his friends while his peers would all congregate around cheering and creating rhythm whether by beat box or knocking the tables & Benches.
The uneasy side of his love for Reggae & Dancehall was being raised as a Seventh Day Adventist and being involved in the local church youth choir, for his mother it was the biggest crime listening to music that was not Gospel. Mega would always try to convince his mom about this kind of music by showing her the positive side of it.

In 2000, Mega participated in the annual Caribbean Gospel Festival, (Reggae, Rap category) taking home the prize for best performance & winner competing against Jamaica, Antigua Trinidad and other Caribbean Islands. Mega D took the place by storm with his captivating performance in front of a large audience, which made him the high light on TV shows, delegations events and many school shows.
In 2001, Mega D moved to Europe to pursue his career. In no time, he was appearing on various Dancehall shows and hip hop festivals. Leaving the crowd in amazement when he would appear on stage with his energy that he brought, many would say ''this guy performs like Elephant Man & has similar features of DMX".

Mega D became an MC for one of the biggest Amsterdam Sound Systems called ''Controverse All Stars''. Appearing on various dancehall events as well as festivals such as the Two7Splash, also known for Europe's biggest Reggae fest where all immense Caribbean entertainers & other international performers performed.

After a year, Mega D was sharing stage shows with International entertainers such as TOK, Wayne Wonder, Capelton , Mr. Vegas, Sizzla, and Elephant Man just to name a few. With the interest of many promoters Mega D was requested to open the sold out concert of Sean Paul's in 2003, releasing his first featured single ''Sometimes'' together with a well-known Dj Crew, Party Squad, which made the top 10 in the European chart within the week.

In the midst of all his development Mega D had already gotten his first record deal with former manager ''Mr. Rude'' CEO and founder of Rock (n) Vibes Record. At the same point in time he was a member of one of Europe's hottest urban groups, called RMXCRW pronounces (Remix Crew). RMXCRW was known for their splendid Remixes of 80's, 90's and underground music, touching them with a modern European Pop Urban Twist, which made this group one of the best sellers and hottest performing groups in the European urban market. RMXCRW toured throughout Europe, Asia, South America and the Caribbean. Being the Headline and featuring on many festivals, concerts and nominated for various Musical TV awards RMXCRW was Market as one of the Best Urban act in Europe.

In 2004, RMXCRW got their first major deal with Universal Music, hence brought Mega D solo career to a pause. Seeing the need to focus on the release of RMXCRW debuted Album, this took away too much time for his own personal career, leaving many friends and fans disappointed seeing that his career was heading more to a Pop Commercial market.

In 2005, Mega D released his featured single with Jamaican Dancehall Artist Red Rat entitled ''Break Da Laws'' which was too much of a hardcore and underground sound according to Universal Music. Mega D continued working and recording with other artist such as Mr.Vegas, Dj Kool, DMX, and more. He also toured and shared stages together with multiplatinum artist such as Sean Paul, T- Pain, Jagged Edge, Ciara, Fat Man Scoop, Akon, Destiny's Child, Kanye West and many others.

In 2008, Mega D decided to follow up on his solo career and was introduced to Jus Bus a well-known Antiguan producer that resided in Miami, who is also responsible for the famous release of the ''Torpedo Riddim'' back in 2007. Mega D released his first single "Hustlers Prayer" on one of Jus Bus Riddim entitled "The War Head Riddim" featuring other dancehall artist such as: Vybz Kartel, Bramma, Dr Evil, And Wasp and many more.

After his solo tour in West Africa Mega took a minute to concentrate on where his career was heading. After the sudden death of his close friend, he realizes that his life was not to the standard that it needed to be. Pleasing the world with music that has nothing positive to supply to the mind of human's. Mega D decided to take a break and left Europe for a while where he is now in Miami emerging his mind and educating himself with the reality of life, recording more conscious and life Issues that many can relate to. Which he also working on his debuted Album.
At the same time, he has been back to Islands where he has been performing at schools giving various lectures, seminars and workshops educating the youths about the vital significance of school and his career. He has been introducing various youth related projects to the Island that has also inspired him in starting his very own Foundation called: Mega D Youth Foundation. The Goal is to Educate, Motivate and Encourage the youths. Mega D is also hoping to spread a positive message throughout the rest of the Caribbean with his new Brand New Release ''Perfect Place''.

JAMAICA TO OPEN MUSIC MUSEUM FEATURING RARE PIECES FROM REGGAE GREATS MARLEY AND TOSH
New music museum in Jamaica to show Marley, Tosh

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica plans to open a music museum next year  that officials say will feature rare pieces from the island’s music  history, such as the sole album that the late reggae star Bob Marley  produced before he gained international fame.

Artifacts will include a cassette tape in which another reggae great, Peter Tosh, jams a blues song with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of  the Rolling Stones, museum curator Herbie Miller said Sunday.

The tape was recorded in June 1977 in New York City, said Miller, who was Tosh’s former manager.

It will be placed alongside the album “Escape from Babylon” by  American singer Martha Velez that Marley produced in 1976.

The museum is requesting donations to help preserve Jamaica’s vibrant music history. The island’s music preservation took a major hit two  years ago when officials discovered that a massive collection of 1970s  music, including original recordings by Marley and Tosh, disappeared  from the archives of the former Jamaica Broadcasting Corp.

The collection has not been found.

Miller said a date has not been set for the opening of the Jamaica  Music Museum in Kingston. It will be operated by the government through  the Institute of Jamaica, which oversees cultural affair.

The People’s Rasta, Junior Kelly is back with his fourth VP Records album Red Pond.  The album features 15 new Junior Kelly tracks, with a majority of the production coming from the world famous Firehouse Crew.

Red Pond continues on his mission of uplifting the people and providing positive music content.  The album begins with the up-tempo track “Celebrate Life,” spreading the messages of; love is what it’s all about and what’s the point of living if we don’t celebrate it.

The first single from Red Pond is the passionate track “My African Child,” Junior Kelly professes his unconditional love and the joy that is brought on by his African Child.  The track “Nuthin’ Wrong With The World” bluntly states that the earth isn’t to blame for the various problems we are all faced with instead the inhabitants are responsible.

Switching gears and embarking on the subject of lost love, Junior Kelly collaborates with Lukie D on the R&B flavored track “She’s Gone.” On “Waan Lef’ De Ghetto,” Junior Kelly expresses his torn feelings of wanting to stay in the neighborhood that he knows and loves but at the same time the conditions that make him want to leave and strive for a better life elsewhere.

The duty of man is to help one another and the strong should lift up the weak, if we as people don’t follow this Junior Kelly asks the simple question on the track “How Better Ah Go Come.” From Collaborating with Queen Ifrica on “Too Late” or Ras Shiloh on Papa’s Song, Red Pond is the reemergence of the Junior Kelly we all know and love.

ONE LOVE FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES NEW LONDON HOME
The UK’s NO1 Reggae Festival - 6-8th August, 2010

One Love Festival has today announced Hainault Forest Country Park as its exciting new home for the annual 3-day Reggae, Dub Camping event. This amazing London location, just 30 minutes from London’s Oxford Circus, boasts a Zoo, amazing woodland walks, lakes and spectacular settings, making it the perfect choice to play host to the UK’s Number 1 Reggae Festival.

One Love Festival was created in recognition of the 30th anniversary of one of the world’s greatest ever rock gigs, Bob Marley’s famous 1978 One Love concert. It is now in its third year and has gained a loyal fan base and interest from all over the world. In 2010, One Love is raising the bar yet again, introducing more international artists and further establishing the reputation already earned.

A huge increase in production will see more Diversity Spoken Word and Lectures, a Caribbean Carnival Procession, larger campsite, Fair Trade Village, food from around the world and much more. The music areas will feature some of the most influential Reggae and Dub musicians, bands and DJs from the scene, and festival-goers will be entertained from day until night, with some additional surprises along the way! Early bird tickets have now sold out, but a special payment plan has been introduced to help customers spread the cost of their ticket throughout the year, so the Festival is accessible for all.

The Festival has also kept true to its environmental roots, boasting 100% compost toilets, a target of 80% recycling, solar showers within the campsite and suitable noise management policies – including the infamous Silent Disco which will keep the partygoers entertained during the early hours.

One Love Festival is a melting pot; a multi-cultural, multi-ethical, free trade and environmentally-friendly event, buzzing with creativity, ideas and soul. Festival Organiser, Dan Wiltshire, commented: “London is a long time coming and we can’t wait to hold the festival in its new setting. It’s going to be a really special event – we’ve had some really positive feedback and there has been a huge buzz about 2010.”

Notes to Editors:

The One Love Festival takes place every year in August and is the UK’s Number 1 Reggae Camping Festival, nominated for 3 Festival Awards in 2009 (Best Small Festival, Family Festival Award and Best Toilets).

About the original One Love Concert (1978):

The One Love Peace Concert was a large concert held on April 22nd, 1978, at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica. This concert was held during a political civil war in Jamaica between opposing parties; Jamaican Labour Party and the People’s National Party. The concert came to its peak during Bob Marley & The Wailers’ performance of “Jammin”, when Marley joined the hands of political rivals, Michael Manley (PNP) and Edward Seaga (JLP).

Bob Marley said the following as he called the two politicians onstage and held their hands above his head: “His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie, I run lightning, leading the people of the slaves to shake hands. . . To show the people that you love them right, to show the people that you gonna unite, show the people that you're over bright, show the people that everything is all right. Watch, watch, watch, what you're doing, because.

I'm not so good at talking but I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. I'm trying to say, could we have, could we have, up here onstage here the presence of Mr. Michael Manley and Mr. Edward Seaga. I just want to shake hands and show the people that we're gonna unite . . . we're gonna unite . . . we've got to unite . . . The moon is high over my head, and I give my love instead. The moon is high over my head, and I give my love instead.”

GRAMPS TO COLLABORATE WITH MUSIQ SOULCHILD & ZIGGY MARLEY ON COUNTRY/R&B ALBUM
Kingston: Reggae crooner Gramps is still on a musical high, this after a whirlwind year in 2009 which culminated with him winning the "Album of the Year" at the 2010 EME Awards in Jamaica for his debut album "Two Sides Of My Heart Vol 1."

The 6"2 inch former football superstar is currently in studios recording tracks for his next big project - a Country and R&B album that he is passionate about. The disc, tentatively titled "2 Sides Of My Heart Vol. 2" will feature an all-star cast including collaborations with R&B singer Musiq Soulchild and reggae superstar Ziggy Marley while Willie Lat from LA, Shannon Sanders and Blu Miller from Nashville will produce a few tracks.

The disc hit stores later this year.  “It's like coming full circle for me because I have always had a fascination with Country and R&B music. This is my second solo project and I am feeling really great about how things are coming together so far,” he confided.

The album promises to be an eclectic blend of R&B and Country songs that he says will make a bold statement once it is completed. While a country and R&B album is not something most people expect from a reggae crooner, as he explains, he is doing the album to keep the fun going in the industry and to do the unexpected.

"I wanna have fun with the music without becoming predictable... plus it has been a dream of my father to see this day" he confessed. "It is a project that my entire family is very proud of and they have been very supportive."

Among the featured tracks that are already completed are "Delicate Balance," "Jamaica" and "Better Man." While his label Dada Son Entertainment will assume responsibility for the project, he is open to a distribution deal with a major label.

"The success of the disc, especial in the international market will depend on how much we put in marketing but a major label would definitely help to take the project to the next level. Distribution wise, they have an established network in place that could help to get the product to the large number of music lovers out there.

I am confident that with the muscle of a major on board as a distributor, I could move 500,000 units" he declared. Aside from working on his own new solo album, Gramps is juggling multiple projects. He is in studio's recording with his brothers and sister from Morgan Heritage. He is also working with J Boog from Hawaii on his new album and is helping his dad Denroy Morgan (I'll Do Anything For You) on a soon to be released autobiography.

KEEPERS OF THE HERITAGE - AUTOBIOGRAPHY TRACES JAMAICA'S MUSIC EVOLUTION
Paul H. Williams, Gleaner Writer
Errol Samuels was born in 1948 at Victoria Jubilee Hospital and grew  up at various addresses in Kingston, except for the two years he spent  in England from 1954 to 1956. It was a childhood of fun and adventures.

His father had an insatiable taste for a variety of music, including  classical. At the time, the most popular types of local music were  calypso and the mento beat. Surrounded by such influences, he is not  surprised that he himself was bitten by the music bug.

"The love of music was nurtured in me during those early years and  remains one of my indulgences to this day," Samuels writes in The Triangular Route , the autobiography of his first 27 years on Earth.

He liked calypso and mento because of their catchy tunes and, while  he was in England, he listened to the haunting sounds of accordions and  the wailings of Scottish bagpipes on Radio Luxemburg. He didn't like the  then emerging rock and roll and, after returning to Jamaica, he started  to listen to American rhythm and blues artistes such as Fats Domino and Johnny Ace.

But it was later in life he realised that most of the lyrics of mento contained double entendres. Just imagine a little chap singing along to ' what is catty?, Big Boy ask ', ' night food ', ' dig, dig water boy ', ' don't touch mi tomato ' and ' mek it tan deh goosey till a mawnin '. He had not a clue, but he remembered mento entertainers such as Lord Flea and Sugar Belly.

In the late 1950s, Samuels realised the music being played on radio  had a different sound, and Jamaican artistes were beginning to sound  like the American rock and roll singers such as the then popular Bill  Black and his combo. "The songs were unusual because they contained a hard staccato guitar riff that  added compelling rhythms to the drum and bass lines," he says. "This  type of syncopation, which is almost military in its sound, had not been  heard on a pop record, at least not by the cognoscenti of Jamaican  music." the Memphis sound.

It so happened that Bill Black had been the bass player in Elvis  Presley's band, and he was later credited for inventing what came to be  known as the Memphis sound. Jamaican recording artistes, he said,  adopted the sound, put their own twist to it and dubbed it ska, "a  description of the guitar sound, which was at the heart of the new  music." Samuels asserted, "I was an avid listener and observer at the  tender age of 10 and that is my take on how things went."

Ska dominated the local airwaves up to the mid-1960s with proponents  such as Prince Buster, Derrick Morgan, Jimmy Cliff, Alton Ellis and Ken Boothe being the main hit-makers. The Skatalites with Tommy McCook, Don  Drummond and Roland Alphanso, took the beat to higher levels. "Theirs  was a mighty sound, the awesome power of brass, accompanied by the drum  and bass of Lloyd Brevett and Lloyd Knibbs," Samuels wrote. Bands led by  Carlos Malcolm and Byron Lee were also in the thick of things.

Yet, ska's fast tempo was reduced somewhat around 1966 and it was now referred to as slow ska.

"Delroy Wilson's hit song, I'm in a Dancing Mood , and Hopeton Lewis' Sounds and Pressure led the change in direction. The music retained the pulsating beat,  but at a slower pace," Samuels wrote. Even the dance moves changed to match the slower beats.

Slow ska segued "into a beat called rocksteady ... with the guitar  doing more than simply laying down a staccato line. There was time  enough to embellish the beat by adding layers of guitar sounds." It gave rise to improvised body rocks, with the head, shoulders and arms being very involved. With knees slightly bent, there wasn't much foot  movement.

In the late 1960s, rocksteady gave way to reggae and the Jamaican  music landscape was to change forever.

"The guitar resumed its original roll of carrying the rhythm. This  time, however, with a double beat. The bass drum was now planted in the music's forefront and became the principal  carrier of the beat, closely allied with the bass lines ... The music  was sweet, made even sweeter by Bob Marley, Jacob Miller and Third  World," Samuels said.

He's very much aware that there are people who will want to discount  his account of how Jamaican music evolved but, he concluded, "I lived  through and experienced the revolution and feel blessed to have  witnessed a cultural shift of such dimensions."

NEW EP FROM JAH SUN AND THE FAR EAST BAND "GRAVITY" IS AVAILABLE NOW AT CD BABY.:
California based reggae singjay Jah Sun recently teamed up with Germany's Far East Band (best known for their work as Gentleman's backing band) for a project that is creating quite the buzz.

The single "Meditation" featuring Queen Omega is bubblin' in Jamaica and getting good rotation from both the radio and video dj's. Jah Sun was invited to sit in with Gentleman and the Far East Band at Reggae Rising in front of 15,000 people last year. Far East Band and Jah Sun knew right away they had a good chemistry and decided to start working together.

Visit CD Baby today and get your copy of the new EP "GRAVITY", this one is a must for anyone who loves roots music and conscious dancehall!

A Prayer for Happiness
May today there be peace within you.
May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content knowing that you are a child of God.
Let His presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, and to bask in the sun.
It is there for each and every one of you.
