Jerry Johnson, legendary saxophonist, is well known, highly respected, and in demand on the Reggae music scene, worldwide.  Jerry a brilliant & gifted musician, can be heard playing of BURNING SPEAR’S 2009 GRAMMY  AWARD WINNING CD, ‘JAH IS REAL,’  ; & SHAGGY’S GOLD CD, ‘HOT SHOT’,  IT WASN’T ME, track.

 

Jerry or JJ, as he’s called by his friends and fellow musicians, was born in the Bronx, New York, to a Jamaican Father and a Barbadian Mother.   Jerry says he knew he wanted to play the sax at the young age of five, when he went on his first visit to the local barber shop, which was owned by his Dad’s friend, SUGAR MINNOT’S trumpet playing UNCLE, LESTER MINNOT. Lester and his fellow musicians, & especially the saxophonist, CHUGLES, who also played with THE DYNAMITES & THE STEPPING STONES, totally impressed him, and he says, “Even though I didn’t like getting my first hair cut, and they gave me a sucker to stop me from crying, I felt excited, because, I knew I wanted to play the horn, and be jamming, just like them.”

 

Jerry actually began playing in J.H.S. and took private lessons & was playing in his first Reggae band at 16 years old.  “My father had a Jamaican Night Club from 1960’s to the 80’s named JIPI JAPA, BLUE LAGOON, PENTHOUSE, where I saw and met many musicians and singers like, THE  BLUES BUSTERS, SKATALITES’ LESTER STERLING, THE WILD BUNCH f/t BUNNY RUGS of THIRD WORLD, PHILLIS DILLION, BYRON LEE, DENROY MORGAN, of the BLACK EAGLES (Father of MORGAN HERITAGE), and many more.

 

Jerry has performed and recorded with endless Reggae greats, including the late great ALTON ELLIS, DENNIS BROWN, SUGAR MINNOT, JOHN HOLT, KEN BOOTH, HORACE ANDY, LEROY HEPTONES SIBBLES, SHAGGY, FRED LOCKS, KRS ONE, JUDY MOWATT, QUEEN LATIFA, SISTER CAROL, BURNING SPEAR, STEEL PULSE, SAKTALITES, BIG MOUNTAIN, BLACK EAGLES (DENROY MORGAN), RECKLESSBREED, AKA NEW BREED, ROLAND ALPHONSO, JACKIE MITTO, CEDRIC (IM) BROOKS, KEVIN BATCHELOR, MAXI PRIEST,  BARRIS HAMMOND, MARCUS MILLER & KY-MANI MRLEY.

Jerry has been seen performing world wide on REGGAE SUNSPLASH, STING, & JAPANSPLASH & has appeared on the ARSENO HALL SHOW with QUEEN LATIFA, JAY LENO & CONAN O’BRIAN SHOWS with STEEL PULSE, and they played at PRESIDENT CLINTON’S INAUGURATION.

In the 80’s Jerry produced his popular CD, EAST OF THE CITY, LP’S THE SCORE, FOR ALL SEASONS, & SAXMAN SPECIAL, with ROLAND ALPHONSO.

 Jerry’s music will make you want to listen again & again. His soon to be released CD, ‘JUST COOLING’, highlights his spicy & original instrumental compositions, and his unique melodious arrangements of Reggae & R&B classics, played in his refreshing & expressive style.

California based reggae singjay Jah Sun recently teamed up with Germany's Far East Band (best known for their work as Gentleman's backing band) for a project that is creating quite the buzz.

 

The single "Meditation" featuring Queen Omega is bubblin' in Jamaica and getting good rotation from both the radio and video dj's. Jah Sun was invited to sit in with Gentleman and the Far East Band at Reggae Rising in front of 15,000 people last year. Far East Band and Jah Sun knew right away they had a good chemistry and decided to start working together.
