Questing

Join author Steve Glazer to learn how to incorporate place-based teaching and learning in your curriculum. A quest is a community treasure hunt that guides people through -- and teaches them how to see -- a unique community treasure. This treasure might be a natural feature in the community (a watershed, a park or wetlands), a cultural site (the oldest building, the first gravestone) or perhaps the setting of a particular story (the life of a person, the home of an animal or the beginnings of an industry). Read the full workshop description here.

Date:  Tuesday, March 25, 2010 from 9:00 to 2:30 (a repeat of the March 9 workshop)

Audience: This workshop is designed for 3rd and 4th grade teachers with an emphasis on community and state landmarks which may be transferred to other age groups.

Cost: Member School Staff $25, Associate Member School Staff $30, Non-Member $40

Optimal Spelling Instruction

Why do students get 100 on their Friday spelling tests then spell so many things wrong in their Monday writing? This session will cover everything you need to know about teaching spelling effectively: developmental stages of spelling; authentic assessment of spelling needs; strategies and mini-lessons for phonetic, visual, and semantic patterns; sight words; word-sorting for higher-level thinking and forming generalizations; student accountability to use, proofread and edit what they know in spelling.

Projects WILD and WILD Aquatic Workshop

Project WILD is an international activity-based, supplementary curriculum that supports the teaching of conservation and environmental education concepts. Targeting classroom teachers and non-formal educators of K-12 students, Project WILD activities focus on wildlife and are both interactive and interdisciplinary.  As students are intrinsically interested in wildlife, they readily engage in learning when it’s related to wildlife.  While the Project WILD manual is full of activities relating to terrestrial wildlife, activities included in the WILD Aquatic manual focus on wildlife and concepts associated with aquatic environments.

Time: Saturday, March 20, 2010, 9:00– 4:00

Location: Owl Brook Hunter Education Center, Perch Pond Road, Holderness, NH

Cost: $60.00, includes 2 manuals, lunch and snacks

For more information or to register, contact Mary at mary.goodyear@wildlife.nh.gov or (603) 271-6649.
