ROTOTOM SUNSPLASH IS EUROPE'S BIGGEST REGGAE FESTIVAL
|
|
|
Held in Italy for the past 16 years, the 17th edition of the festival is relocating to Benicàssim in Spain and will take place from 21st until 28th August. The popularity of Rototom is demonstrated by the huge numbers of people who flock through the gates - peaking with some 150,000 attendees for the ten day long event.
The event is completely sponsor-free. An ethical choice made by the Rototom Association in order to guarantee independence from economic and political powers and ensure that event is an oasis in which attendees can live free from the advertising onslaught that bombards us all almost everywhere we go these days.
Furthermore, Rototom is much more than a music event.... As well as the live acts every evening and dancehall music every night, during the daytime there are debates and meetings discussing topics surrounding reggae music and Rasta culture, films and documentaries, photo & art exhibitions, percussion workshops, African dance, Capoeira and Didgeridoo lessons, sessions focusing on meditation and alternative medicine. Plus a professional team that organises creative workshops, puppet shows and juggling to entertain the large number of children who are always present at our festival.
The new location of Benicàssim is a seaside resort on the Mediterranean sea coast, just a few kilometers north of Castellón. Located in the heart of the Plana Alta territory, it extends to reach the foothills of the Desert de las Palmes and of Agujas de Santa Águeda. The highest mountain is Bartolo, its peak reaches 729 metres of altitude, granting a marvellous view over the coastline and on the inner landscape. With the beach just 900m away and over 300 days of sun per year we are sure Benicassim will warm all our hearts like never before!
What’s more the new site is easy to reach... Barcelona, Valencia, Reus and Alicante Airports are all within reasonable distance with buses/trains to bring you from their airport right to the festival. Alternatively sea connections to the Port of Barcelona (280km away) can be found from Italy, Morocca and some of the Spanish islands. Package deals including bus travel and entry to the festival (plus camping for those who want it) are also now available from Germany, France, Switzerland and Belgium. Further information about alternative travel options such as car sharing can be found on the Rototom website.
Tickets are now on sale and line-ups will be being announced on the website as they are booked so keep checking www.rototom.com.

THE 19TH EPISODE OF NICHOLAS Da SILVA'S GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES 'DREAD AND ALIVE' FEATURING DREW MCINTOSH: JAMAICAN SUPER HERO
|
|
Dread & Alive....is an ongoing graphic novel series about Jamaican Super Hero Drew McIntosh. If you missed any episodes, click here to read:
"Just stand still now, Drew. Don’t move," Maria warned, inching toward her son. Although she was a professor of zoology, with a great deal of knowledge about the island's fauna, she wanted Drew away from that snake as quickly as possible. It might be true that snakes on the island were harmless ... but this one was looming over her son. She quietly walked around the snake to where Drew was standing. Frightened, he quickly stepped back behind his mother.
"You okay?" Maria asked, pulling him away. “The snake is harmless. She just look’s frightening.”
Maria studied the magnificent creature for a moment.
"She’s beautiful. Notice the reddish-brown color on her tail. She’s one big snake," Maria said, chuckling as she stared at the 6-foot length.
"What kind of snake is she?" Drew asked. Now fascinated with the creature, he peeked out from behind his mother.
"She’s a Jamaican Boa, the biggest predator on the island."
"Are you going to kill her?
"No. I won’t harm her. She’s an endangered species and needs to be protected."
"You sure she’s not dangerous?" Drew asked, still hiding behind his mother.
"Let me tell you. Of all the snakes on the island, she’s the most harmless to people."
Drew slowly stepped around his mother and stared at the snake. "Is she awake?"
"No. She nocturnal. Probably sleeping off her last meal."
"Does she live in the trees with her family?"
"Sometimes," Maria said, laughing. “But they live on the ground too. These snakes are ground dwellers and arboreal creatures."
"A-bo-," Drew struggled with the word.
"Arboreal," Maria said distinctly. "That means they live in the trees."
At that moment, Philip and Cubbenah appeared, standing at the top of the hill.
"You okay down there?" Philip called out.
"Yeah, we’re fine," Maria called back.
Relieved, Philip turned to Cubbenah. "You go on. I’ll stay with my family and catch up with you."
"I don’t think that’s such a good idea. Up ahead, you can’t tell where the path will take you. There’s also sharp rocks and sinkholes. I don’t think it’s wise to leave you alone, Mon."
"Okay, then." Philip agreed. "Just give me a moment."
Cubbenah nodded, then signaled to the two warriors to join him.
"You sure everything’s okay?" Philip asked again as he walked toward Maria and Drew.
"Yeah, Mon," Maria reassured him. "He’s just a boy. Curious, that’s all. Just like you once were, remember?
Philip shook his head, laughed and placed an arm around his wife's shoulder. "You’re right.”
Drew stared at the snake, frightened yet mesmerized by the creature. He still had one last question for his mother. "What does she eat?"
“They eat mostly rodents, including bats and birds," Maria said.
"They’re also known to eat little seven-year-old boys,” Philip teased. "But they gotta be very hungry.”
Philip's remark sent Drew scurrying back behind his mother. Philip took him by the hand, pulling Drew toward him, so he could crouch in front of his son. "How you holding up Drew?" he asked, seriously.
"I’m fine."
"Cubbenah says the trail up ahead is very dangerous. Are you going to be alright?"
"I'm okay."
"It’s very important to watch your step.”
"Okay, I will," Drew replied, quietly.
Philip glanced up at Maria, smiling when he saw the approval in her eyes. He turned his attention back to his son.
"How about if I give you a ride on my shoulder? You’ll be closer to the birds in the tree."
"Yeah," Drew said, his eyes gleaming.
A sense of pride overwhelmed Maria as she watched how easily her husband lifted Drew above his head and placed him on his shoulder. "Hey, Drew, how’s the view from up there?" she called, laughing.
"It’s great!" Drew called back, excitedly. "I can see the whole world from here!"
Philip turned to Cubbenah and motioned for him to guide them along the path.
To be continued …,

MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY, MISHKA GO BEHIND THE SCENES OF NEW ALBUM
|
|
|
|
Back in 1999, Matthew McConaughey was vacationing in Jamaica when he heard a brand of reggae music he simply couldn't forget. As it turns out, it was music from a then-little known artist named Mishka, a Bermuda born musician who grew up traveling the seas with his family.
Mishka's music hit McConaughey so profoundly that the movie star went to extreme lengths to track him down. As he says, "I kinda had an APB out looking for anything Mishka."
A few years later, Mishka was playing at the House of Blues in Hollywood, where McConaughey finally met him. A remarkably close relationship--both professionally and personally--was born. According to McConaughey, the artist had no idea who the actor was, until his wife claimed to have recognized him from television.
Thanks to McConaughey, who started a music label with the sole intent of disseminating Mishka's music to a broader audience, the artist has garnered substantial attention, appearing on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live,' and 'The Rachel Ray Show.'
His 2009 album 'Above the Bones,' which was produced by McConaughey quickly shot up to the top spot on Billboard's reggae charts, and eventually earned Mishka a 'Best New Artist' honor on iTunes.
Mishka's latest album, titled 'Talk About,' was just released this Tuesday on iTunes, and will hit stores worldwide on March 30. Once again, McConaughey found himself in the studio, hard at work as a producer. For him, though, the process of making reggae music is similar, in many ways, to movie making. "Maybe it's a different vocabulary, but each song's its own story," the actor says. "Each song kind of has their own three-act structure. ... We start with a tease, then intro everybody, take it high, climax, pull off, give it a rest and then leave them wanting a little bit more."
THE 17TH ANNUAL SIERRA NEVADA WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL WELCOMES DON CARLOS AND KORA
The Sierra Nevada World Music Festival is pleased to announce that Don Carlos and Kora will be performing at our 17th annual musical celebration.
SNWMF 2010 will be held at the Mendocino County Fairgrounds June 18th through 20th. The fairgrounds, in the heart of Anderson Valley (Boonville), are just 30 minutes south west of Ukiah.
Don Carlos was born and raised in Western Kingston, Jamaica in a very deprived district known as Waterhouse. Don Carlos began singing in 1973 as a member of Black Uhuru. He sang alongside Garth Dennis and Derrick Simpson the leader of the trio.
Don played a key role in the recordings of the highly acclaimed Love Crisis album, produced by Prince Jammy in 1977 which was later re-released as The Black Sounds of Freedom. After some time finding his sound as a soloist, Carlos blossomed in May 1981 releasing the heavy cultural roots album Suffering for Negus Roots. He has since become very popular in the live scene and has released twelve solo albums working alongside Gold, his backup vocalist and co writer. Some of his most notable albums include Harvest Time, Day to Day Living and Them Never Know a Natty Dread were released in 1982. Spread Out also released in 1982 commonly known now as Laser Beam had many fan favorites.
Carlos still maintains his roots flavor and awesome melodies to this day; he continues to grow in popularity and still performs all over the world.
Kora are a New Zealand reggae, rock, dub & roots band, originally hailing from Whakatane. Four musical brothers from the Kora family, Laughton, Francis, Stuart and Brad, began playing together as a band in the early 1990s, winning the national Rockquest high school band competition in 1991 and the East Coast region Battle of the Bands three years running, earning a release on Tangata Records for their efforts.
In early 2002 Kora's core members Laughton and Francis recorded a four song demo while on holiday in Queenstown, sharing songwriting duties with local muso Dan McGruer who also joined them on bass guitar and keyboards, and inviting visiting Madagascan tourist Lilou to lay down vocals on the song "Barely Can See". Kora's four track demo caught the attention of Wellington-based record label LOOP Recordings Aota in late 2002, leading to the release of "Barely Can See" on the label's LOOP Select 004 compilation CD in December. In 2007, the group released their acclaimed self titled album, much to the adoration of their loyal following.

SINGJAYS TOPPING ONLINE REGGAE CHARTS
BY STEVEN JACKSON Observer writer Monday, March 29, 2010
SINGJAYS Gentleman, Gyptian and the group TOK are topping the online reggae charts worldwide while hardcore deejays are absent. These singjays are dominating the major markets of Europe, America and Japan respectively with their new singles and albums.
Only crossover deejays Sean Paul, Shaggy and Damian Marley are charting online with catalogue material whilst hardcore deejays which dominate local charts are absent from any of the 22 listed country online charts up to Saturday.
Digital music is significant as it accounts for one-third of total music sales and iTunes is the dominant online music retailer followed by Amazon. TOK’s latest album, I Believe released March 3 in Japan currently charts at #2 oniTune. TOK’s latest album, I Believe released March 3 in Japan currently charts at #2 oniTune.
Gentlemen's single, It No Pretty released March 26 rocketed to number 1 in
The single of the same name currently charts at #9 on the iTunes Reggae Singles chart. The quartet is the only non- Japanese act listed in the top 10.
Music stakeholders, including culture Ministerof Culture Olivia 'Babsy' Grange and music entrepreneur Charles Campbell, have lamented the waning influence Jamaican artistes are having within international reggae markets, especially Europe and Japan.
Last week, less than 10 per cent of the reggae charts on iTunes were occupied by living Jamaicans -- including Damian Marley, Ziggy Marley, Stephen Marley, Sean Paul, TOK, Lutan Fyah and Marcia Griffiths who, combined, had 17 slots out of the 220 chart positions within the 22 listed countries on iTunes. However, the late Bob Marley dominates the charts and currently tops 20 of the 22 iTunes markets.

A hearing is set for Friday morning. Banton has been in jail on a drug charge since December. The motion says he's lost 40 pounds and was not given a diet in accordance with his religious views.
He's a Rastafarian, a religion that places importance on a vegetable and fruit-based diet. The attorney has also claimed that the government entrapped Banton when it used a paid informant to convince his client to buy cocaine.
To prove entrapment, Markus will have to show that Banton was not predisposed to engage in criminal behavior and that the government induced him. According to a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration affidavit, Banton and two others traveled to Sarasota to purchase the cocaine from an undercover law enforcement officer.
The DEA was tipped off by a confidential informant who agreed to wear a recording device during the drug negotiation session. Banton was arrested at his Tamarac home on Dec. 10. The 36-year-old singer, born Mark Myrie, pleaded not guilty to a drug charge in Tampa federal court. Banton's trial is expected to begin in April. If convicted he could face up to life in prison.
The husky-voiced Banton has been a major star in his native Jamaica since the early 1990s with brash dancehall music and, more recently, a traditional reggae sound. His career has been stunted in the United States because of some song lyrics that advocated violence against gay men. Banton's most recent album, "Rasta Got Soul", was nominated for the 2009 Grammy Reggae Album of the Year but was beaten by Stephen Marley. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation launched an online petition protesting the nomination.

DON CARLOS – TOURING NORTH AMERICA - JUNE / JULY / AUGUST 2010
|
|
|
Veteran reggae artist Don Carlos did the Bob Marley Day shows in southern CA and Mexico in Feb. 2010. In March he tours Europe, and in April he tours South America. June he does shows in Costa Rica and Mexico, and then he is scheduled to do some western U.S. shows along with the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival. Early July he does some European festivals, and then he commences a full North American tour including the Reggae on the River festival.
Don has a new CD out called Changes, that was released January 2010 and is selling well. It has been a top seller on I-Tunes.
In 2009 Don also toured Europe and South America. April 2009, he toured the western U.S, where he is currently one of the most popular reggae artists, and in August he headlined the Monterey Bay Reggaefest.
Don’s band is in good form, with luscious female harmonies, sharp decisive horn phrases, classic songs and solid engineering by Loren Miller – his front of the house engineer. Don’s spirit is positive and his crew is well worked in.
On Reggae Rising 2008, Don headlined Sunday night, and was also featured prime time with Sly and Robbie, Junior Reid and Garth Dennis on Saturday night. Shortly thereafter, he went to Europe to do the festival circuit again there. February 2008, Don did the Bob Marley Day shows in San Diego and Mexico, and then completed a European tour. In June/July 2008 he toured Brazil and Peru, where he is greatly loved and appreciated
In 2007, Don toured Poland, Austria, Portugal, Spain, Holland and France in Europe. On the festival circuit he played Earthdance, in northern CA, The Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, Reggae Rising, Music in the Park in San Jose, CA, The Monterey Bay Reggaefest, the Upsalla festival in Sweden, the Reggae Sundance in Holland, and the Reggae Summerjam in Germany. Sly and Robbie backed him on Reggae Rising prime time Saturday night. Don has also been touring Hawaii regularly, where he headlined the Bob Marley Day festivals February 2007 on all four of the major Hawaiian Islands.
Don is a melodic singer whose classic songs are well arranged and executed live. He is a mature artist, definitely one of the nicer and more genuine singers in the reggae business. His band has remained consistent for the past eight years. Don’s gentle contented spirit is a comfort to his friends and fans. There is a class about him as an artist that promoters and venue owners take pride in.
On the recording side, Don spends much of his time in the recording studio. He has out seven albums with Ras records, and at least nineteen other releases on different labels. These titles are listed on his biography. Don recorded four albums with Black Uhuru for the Mesa Blue Moon label, and toured with Black Uhuru as lead vocalist from 1989 - 1994.
In his music, Don speaks for all people. He talks about peace and love, generosity and righteousness. He doesn’t leave out thanking Jah for everything. “I love you and Jah loves you more”, he says. “Love Jah, and you will have everything – all wisdom.” Don has a big heart and a kind loving spirit. He is a special artist. Because of his blessings, the multitudes are drawn to him.
You can watch a video clip of Don performing live at the Maritime Hall, San Francisco, in the late 90’s at the following link:

O'NEILL ANNOUNCES ECO FRIENDLY APPAREL COLLECTION WITH J.K. LIVIN ARTIST MISHKA
The musician Known For His Soulful Sound and Reggae Roots Signs On as Face of ECO'Neill Men's Collection, Spring 2011
IRVINE, Calif., March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- O'Neill (www.oneill.com), leading the way in surf products and apparel since 1952, today announced the launch of ECO'Neill, an innovative collection of sustainable, eco-friendly designs that aim to support the preservation of the environment for generations to come.
Helping to kick off the launch is newest member of the O'Neill family, soulful roots-reggae artist and waterman, Mishka, as he promotes his latest album release "Talk About" on actor Matthew McConaughey's j.k. livin records. Mishka will be giving audiences a preview of the collection during his album tour starting this week, and will be contributing to the creative process and design of upcoming ECO'Neill styles. Later this year, he will be featured in related advertising, POP, mobile marketing and social media efforts from O'Neill to support the introduction of ECO'Neill t-shirts, tanks, beanies and boardshorts hitting stores next Spring.
"Mishka adds a whole new dynamic and direction to O'Neill," said Toby Bost, CEO of O'Neill Clothing. "Growing up a waterman and having an appreciation for the ocean and earth are attributes that make him a natural fit for us. We're looking forward to incorporating his music, unique spirit and creativity into the ECO'Neill line."
"We're excited about offering environmentally friendly O'Neill product under the ECO'Neill label," added O'Neill men's VP of Design, Ryan Rush. "Our ultimate goal is to increase the amount of sustainable manufacturing practices companywide."
ECO'Neill's Spring 2011 collection includes basic tees, tanks and beanies made from 100% organic cotton, and novelty tees and tanks in 100% organic cotton slub jersey. Boardshort fabrics will be made from recycled plastic bottles.
"Working with O'Neill is giving me a chance to spread my music to more people -- and specifically those who are into water sports," said Mishka. "I have found such musical and spiritual inspiration out on the waves, so this partnership is a good way to connect with people who probably feel the same inspiration. It's also cool if I can help O'Neill become a more ecologically friendly company along the way. It's a win win situation."
The j.k. livin record label was started in 2006 by Matthew McConaughey, and released Mishka's first album "Above The Bones" in February 2009. The album debuted at #1 on the Reggae Billboard Charts and went on to be the #9 reggae album of the year. Mishka also won the iTunes Best New Artist award in the Singer/Songwriter category in 2009.
Join O'Neill as they support Mishka at The Roxy in Hollywood, Calif. tonight, and Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach, Calif. on March 26th. Visit www.mishka.com for show times and ticket information. "Talk About" will be available to download exclusively on iTunes starting March 30th.
About O'Neill
O'Neill, the original California surf, snow and youth lifestyle brand, was founded in 1952 when a young man named Jack O'Neill took his unstoppable passion for surfing and used it to beat Mother Nature at her own game. Pioneering the world's first neoprene wetsuit, Jack had successfully found a way to extend his surf sessions in the bone-chilling breaks of Northern California. He opened up the garage doors to his first surf shop in Santa Cruz soon after.
While many things have changed since those humble beginnings, Jack's initial vision of producing functional and innovative boardriding products continues to lie at the core of everything the company does. O'Neill's core values – innovation in style and technology – have seen the brand devote itself wholeheartedly to the evolution of the action sports lifestyle. From the first ever neoprene wetsuit and surf leash, to the world's first stitchless boardshorts and range of groundbreaking wearable electronics, O'Neill's progressive spirit will always drive the company forward. For more information, please visit www.oneillclothing.com.
About Mishka and j.k. livin records
Mishka is an authentic musician in an underrepresented genre with an incredible story—from growing up on a boat in Bermuda to having one of film's most iconic figures, Matthew McConaughey, start his own record label exclusively for his music. McConaughey first became familiar with Mishka on New Year's Eve in 2000 after he had been unable to sleep for three consecutive days. When he heard Mishka's music, McConaughey admits he "slept like a baby for 5 straight hours," and was immediately hooked to Mishka's comfort-inducing, soulful melodies. McConaughey became a man on a mission, determined to track down the artist that was behind the "soundtrack of his life," and searched for Mishka for almost five years before finally catching him at the House of Blues in Los Angeles. McConaughey made a quick phone call to his lawyer upon meeting Mishka and officially created the j.k. livin record label to release Mishka's music to the masses. Mishka's 2009 release, "Above the Bones," debuted at #1 on the Billboard Reggae Charts, and Mishka was named 2009's Best New Artist by iTunes in the Singer/Songwriter category. REWIND -BOOK ON REGGAE TO WHEEL AND COME AGAIN
American author David Katz is working on a revised version of his 2003 book, Solid Foundation: An Oral History of Reggae.
Katz told The Sunday Gleaner last week that he plans to release the new-look tome late this year or early 2011. It will be retitled Rewind and published by DJ History, an independent British company.
"So far I have gone through the entire text to correct any errors and tighten up things generally, and I have now thoroughly revised chapters 10, 11 and 12 to include new interview material with artistes such as Trinity, Lone Ranger , Ranking Joe, Charlie Chaplin, Josie Wales, and Barrington Levy," Katz said.
The London-based Katz said he also made additions to chapter 13 of the original, which looks at dancehall's computer age. There are interviews with some of the leading artistes from that era, such as Admiral Bailey, King Kong, General Trees, Bobby Digital, Beres Hammond, Admiral Tibet, Lieutenant Stitchie, Robbie Lyn, Johnny Osbourne, Junior Reid, Tony Rebel and Gussie Clarke.
Katz has added a new chapter, 14, which examines the dancehall beyond 1993 when many Jamaican acts were being signed by major labels in the United States. For this segment, Katz interviewed new-wave roots like Anthony B, Buju Banton, Capleton and Everton Blender, as well as Bounty Killer, Sean Paul and producer Jeremy Harding. Solid Foundation was Katz's follow-up to the biography, People Funny Boy: The Genius of Lee 'Scratch' Perry, which was first released in 2000. Katz looks at the evolution of Jamaican popular music through the sound system and studio circuit of the 1960s and early 1970s.
His extensive interviews with producers and musicians made Solid Foundation a popular read among reggae-history buffs in Europe. Katz has been based in Britain for over 20 years. In addition to Solid Foundation and People Funny Boy, he has written on Jamaican culture for leading newspapers such as The Guardian and The Telegraph in Britain. He has also contributed to reggae documentaries.

CALICO : : Midtown Cali Ways
|
|
When was the last time you heard Jamaican Hip Hop?
CALICO has created his own musical genre by infusing Dancehall and Reggae with Hip Hop. It’s hard to capture the cool and welcoming demeanor of the talented Jamaican artiste/songwriter, CALICO.
He is Peter Tosh meets Bounty Killer with a tinge of Beanie Sigel. His powerful and distinctive voice brings back memories of Bounty Killer, his witty, thoughtful and positive lyrics draws comparisons with Damian “ Junior Gong” Marley and his unapologetic defense of equal rights and justice (and his fondness of unicycles) is in the vein of Peter Tosh.
At the core, CALICO is a dancehall DJ yet he represents a new generation of artists such as Collie Buddz and K’Naan that balances and blends different musical influences for a fresh, upbeat conscious, multi-genre sound.
After a 3 year hiatus during which time he became a Rastafarian and a father, CALICO returns with his much anticipated debut album, MIDTOWN CALI WAYS. The album has distinct island elements yet maintains the hard hitting percussion and “the needle to record” sound that comes straight from the Hip Hop playbook.
Listen for yourself- Midtown is place, Midtown is a vibe, Midtown is feeling!!! Release Date: March 2010 Genre: Reggae Additional Genre: Dancehall and Hip Hop Site where they can purchase: http://midtowncaliways.com/ Give Thanks for the support and promo. If you need anything else, just let us know.

Earth Healing Ceremony
by: Medicine Grizzly Bear
O Great Creator, I come before you in a humble manner and offer you this sacred pipe. With tears in my eyes and an ancient song from my heart, I pray.
To the four powers of Creation, To the Grandfather Sun, To the Grandmother Moon, To the Mother Earth, And to my ancestors.
I pray for my relations in Nature, All those who walk, crawl, fly, and swim, Seen and unseen, To the good spirits that exist in every part of Creation.
I ask that you bless our elders and children and families and friends, And the brothers and sisters in prison. I pray for the ones who are sick on drugs and alcohol, And for those homeless and forlorn. I also pray for peace among the four races of humankind.
May there be good health and healing for this Earth, May there be Beauty above me, May there be Beauty below me, May there be Beauty in me, May there be Beauty around me. I ask that this world be filled with Peace, Love and Beauty.
Spokane, Washington, 1990
