YOGA!
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
What is Vinyasa Yoga?

This week, guest instructor Jennie Julio joined us and led us in a calming, peaceful session of yoga.  Vinyasa yoga, helps to reach optimal body alignment through the flow between postures.  The purpose of viṅyāsa is to create heat in the body, which leads to purification of the body through increased circulation and sweating. Yoga also improves flexibility.

Jennie had us finish with quiet time, complete with a lifting herbal eye pillow!
Find out more about Jennie's yoga classes, she has a home studio and regularly holds classes at the library and at Jennings School.
THANK YOU, JENNIE!

FOOD FOCUS - WHOLE FOODS!
March found us down under celebrating the wearin' o' the GREEN, for healthy living, from your inside out!

In the spirit of St. Paddy's Day, and just for FUN, we devoured a fantastic Irish Soda Bread made with spelt flour and ground flax seed - you guessed it, added fiber and less gluten.  This is an easy quick bread, with a short ingredient list that we can make at home.

We reviewed WHOLE FOODS basics - dark leafy greens, sweet root vegetables, sea veggies, beans and legumes, real whole grains like brown rice and quinoa and how they help to CREATE BALANCE in our body and brain.
Just think about this...what we eat doesn't just build our body, but also our energy, our mood, our emotions and our ability to focus and learn!
WHOLE FOODS - WHOLE YOU!!!

This club inspires us to add WHOLE FOOD in to what we eat.

We learned about whole foods, foods as they are grown in nature, where nothing is stripped away, changed, altered or modified in any way, as well as foods grown without herbicides, pesticides, growth hormones or other funky things - will help to crowd out the not so whole foods and junk "foods" that we might be eating.

What to add in this month?  GLORIOUS GREENS!

We cooked up some KALE with garlic and we cooked up some BOK CHOY with black sesame seeds.  Both were delicious!
We showed new teens and guests how to make kale chips and an even easier way to add those greens in is to just add in torn pieces of raw kale to your regular tossed salad.  How easy is that!

We also talked about how what we eat impacts not just our mind and mood and energy, but our environment, too.

FIBER.  MAGNESIUM.  CALCIUM.  VITAMINS A, C, E, and K!
GLORIOUS GREENS IS NOW PUBLISHED HERE!

RECIPE: GLORIOUS GREENS
From wearin' the greens during the month of March, to the green that comes with this glorious, springtime of year - make sure to get your greens in daily, all year long!

Select ANY green leafy vegetable when at the market:  kale, collards, spinach, chard, mustard greens, dandelion greens, beet greens, arugula, watercress, etc.  I like to have 2 or 3 on hand.

Directions:
In medium sauté pan, put ¼ - ½ inch water & place on burner on high heat.  When it comes to a boil, add in chopped greens.  Sprinkle with a little sea salt.  Toss quickly with tongs.  Pour off extra water. (Add water to soup if you like.)  Drizzle a little olive oil on greens and serve!

For added nutrients:  Add a splash of tamari or Bragg’s.  Add cashews and dried cherries or white raisins, or pine nuts and tomato.  Add chopped garlic and fresh herbs.

For more variety and fun, choose a combination of greens
from your fridge.  For example:
1 leaf collard greens, 4 stems broccolini, small handful baby spinach
                                                     or
        1 – 2 leaves kale, 3 asparagus spears, 1 leaf collard greens

Choose from what you have on hand.  Choose what you want to have.  Discover what your favorites are!
Small amounts of greens can be added into your scrambled eggs, tomato sauce and soups, and even the kid’s mac & cheese, too!  Try to sneak them in wherever you can for the added benefits!!

About Glorious Greens

Green vegetables are the foods most missing in modern diets. Learning to cook and eat greens is essential to creating health. When you nourish yourself with greens, you will naturally crowd out the foods that make you sick. Greens help build your internal rain forest and strengthen the blood and respiratory systems. They are especially good for city people who rarely see fields of green in open countryside. Green is associated with spring, the time of renewal, refreshment and vital energy. In Asian medicine, green is related to the liver, emotional stability and creativity.

Nutritionally, greens are very high in calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, phosphorous, zinc, and vitamins A, C, E and K. They are crammed with fiber, folic acid, chlorophyll and many other micronutrients and phyto-chemicals.
Some of the benefits from eating dark leafy greens are:
~  blood purification   ~   cancer prevention   ~   improved circulation  ~
~  strengthened immune system   ~   promotion of healthy intestinal flora  ~
~  promotion of subtle, light and flexible energy  ~
~   lifted spirit and elimination of depression   ~
~  improved liver, gall bladder and kidney function  ~
~  cleared congestion, especially in lungs by reducing mucus  ~
