THE 21rst EPISODE OF NICHOLAS Da SILVA'S GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES 'DREAD AND ALIVE' FEATURING DREW MCINTOSH: JAMAICAN SUPER HERO

Dread & Alive....is an ongoing graphic novel series about Jamaican Super Hero Drew McIntosh. If you missed any episodes, click here to read:

            "ShadowCatcher?"
"The name alone strikes fear in the heart of all our people."
Maria looked puzzled. "Why do people fear him?"
Cubbenah cowered and glanced over his shoulder. "No more talk about him.  He can hear what we say. We must go now. Quickly. We want to make it to the village before nightfall."
Maria stared blankly at Philip, waiting for direction. At that moment, a horn sounded, startling her. "Wh ... What was that?" Maria asked, frantically. Before anyone could answer her, the horn sounded again. "Are we in danger?"
Philip put his arm around her, smiled and shook his head. "No. We’re fine. That’s the abeng horn. That’s how the Maroons talk with each other. If you look closely, you will see a warrior standing watch high up in one of the trees. He’s alerting the village of our presence. It’s nothing to worry about.”
Drew strained, searching the trees for any sign of a Maroon warrior. He looked to his left, then to his right. Nothing. No Maroon warriors. Not even a parrot. Then, something moved … there, to the left.  It was just a fleeting glance but he was sure … It was. There ... A Maroon warrior, his face painted in vibrant colors, was staring back at him.  Although he insisted he was not frightened, Drew asked his father to please let him down - he was a little to close to the trees.
Meanwhile, at the head of the group, Cubbenah move forward, picking up his pace as he guided them to the village. He was aware of the warriors hidden among the trees and he  welcomed their presence because it signaled they were close, very close, to their destination.
As they reached the outskirts of Accompong, marked by a secluded dogwood tree, Cubbenah heard the sound of drums pounding out a thunderous beat that grew in intensity as the group approached the village. The smell of food lingered in the air, alerting them that a big feast was being prepared in their honor.  It would renew their strength and help them finish the journey.
Cubbenah led the group into Accompong where they were met by delegates from the village, mostly women and children. As they moved through the crowd, Philip recognized some from his last visit.  Drew, now lifted from his father's shoulders, stayed closed to his mother; he was feeling more than a little apprehension. Suddenly, the crowd began to disbursed and a dreadlocked man, his beard long and scruffy, appeared. He was dressed in a lion-skin cloak and he carried a staff in one hand. Cudjoe, the wise and benevolent village chief of the Jamaican Maroons, stood before them.
"Welcome back to Accompong," Cudjoe smiled. "Welcome home."

THE 17TH ANNUAL SIERRA NEVADA WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL WELCOMES DON CARLOS AND KORA
The Sierra Nevada World Music Festival is pleased to announce that Don Carlos and Kora will be performing at our 17th annual musical celebration.  SNWMF 2010 will be held at the Mendocino County Fairgrounds in Northern California on  June 18th through 20th.  The fairgrounds, in the heart of Anderson Valley (Boonville), are just 30 minutes south west of Ukiak, CA.

Don Carlos was born and raised in Western Kingston, Jamaica in a very deprived district known as Waterhouse.  Don Carlos began singing in 1973 as a member of  Black Uhuru.

He sang alongside Garth Dennis,  Derrick Simpson the leader of the trio. Don played a key role in the recordings of the highly acclaimed Love Crisis album, produced by   Prince Jammy in 1977 which was later re-released as The Black Sounds of Freedom. After some time finding his sound as a soloist Carlos blossomed in May 1981 releasing the heavy cultural roots album Suffering for Negus Roots.

He has since become very popular in the live scene and has released twelve solo albums working alongside Gold, his backup vocalist and co writer. Some of his most notable albums include Harvest Time, Day to Day Living and Them Never Know a Natty Dread were released in 1982. Spread Out also released in 1982 commonly known now as Laser Beam had many fan favorites. Carlos still maintains his roots flavor and awesome melodies to this day; he continues to grow in popularity and still performs all over the world.

Kora are a New Zealand reggae, rock, dub & roots band, originally hailing from Whakatane. Four musical brothers from the Kora family, Laughton, Francis, Stuart and Brad, began playing together as a band in the early 1990s, winning the national Rockquest high school band competition in 1991 and the East Coast region Battle of the Bands three years running, earning a release on Tangata Records for their efforts.  In early 2002 Kora's core members Laughton and Francis recorded a four song demo while on holiday in Queenstown, sharing songwriting duties with local muso Dan McGruer who also joined them on bass guitar and keyboards, and inviting visiting Madagascan tourist Lilou to lay down vocals on the song "Barely Can See".  Kora's four track demo caught the attention of Wellington-based record label LOOP Recordings Aota in late 2002, leading to the release of "Barely Can See" on the label's LOOP Select 004 compilation CD in December. In 2007, the group released their acclaimed self titled album, much to the adoration of their loyal following.

18 & Ova – Riddim Driven :
Troy McLean, one of Reggae music’s best-known producers, has pulled together some of the world’s top Reggae artists to produce his latest monster riddim, 18 & Ova. For years, producer Troy McLean has been a major influence in the Dancehall and Reggae Riddim styles. Along with partner Garfield Hamilton, McLean was one of the primary producers of the legendary Dancehall series “Riddim Driven.” In addition, McLean has produced some of Reggae music’s biggest Dance hits.

Prayer for Students
God of Light and Truth,
thank you for giving me
a mind that can know
and a heart that can love.
Help me to keep learning every day of my life,
for all knowledge leads to you.
Let me be aware of your presence
in all things and at all times.
Encourage me when work is difficult
and when I am tempted to give up;
encourage me when my brain seems slow
and the way forward is difficult.
Grant me the grace to put my mind to use
exploring the world you have created,
confident that in you there a wisdom
that is real.
Amen.
