29th IRAWMA Top Nominees Julian Marley, Gramps Morgan, Queen Ifrica and Tarrus Riley Follow Musical Footsteps of Famous Dads
|
|
|
|
New York – Music legends Bob Marley, Denroy Morgan, Freddie McGregor, Fela Kuti, Derrick Morgan, Jimmy Riley, Junior Reid and Jah Thomas have an extensive list of classic recordings. So it’s only natural that the children of these veterans would follow in the musical footsteps of their famous dads. Julian Marley(son of Bob Marley), Gramps Morgan(son of Denroy Morgan), Queen Ifrica (daughter of Derrick Morgan) and Tarrus Riley(son of Jimmy Riley) are nominees and scheduled performers for the 29th International Reggae & World Music Awards (IRAWMA).
The black-tie-red-carpet celebration of music royalty takes place May 2, 2010 at York College Performing Arts Center, at 94-45 Guy R. Brewer Blvd in Jamaica, New York. Reggae singer-songwriter Julian “Ju Ju” Marley has been nominated for four International Reggae & World Music Awards (IRAWMA). “I give thanks to the IRAWMA award staff and to all the fans that continue to show their love and support,” says Marley. JuJu’s IRAWMA nominations comes on the heels of a Grammy nod for Best Reggae Album the talented artist received for his third studio album entitled, “Awake” that was co-produced with his brothers Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley and Stephen Marley, on Ghetto Youths/Universal Records. Rising reggae star Gramps Morgan, Mojo Morgan and the group Morgan Heritage, the children of Denroy Morgan have amassed a great body of work over the last 12 years.
Gramps, fresh from smashing performances in Trinidad & Tobago is up for five IRAWMA nominations. He shares a “Best Crossover Song” nomination with India.Arie for their duet on “Therapy.” Passionate about his latest recording project, Gramps is putting the finishing touches on a Country and R&B album that is set to hit stores later this year. Jamaica’s sing/jay Queen Ifrica captured nine nominations and set an IRAWMA record for most nominations in a single year for a female artist. The daughter of Ska pioneer, Derrick Morgan, Queen Ifrica is described as a “lioness on the rise.” A versatile performer Queen can sing the sweet melodies of traditional reggae and rock the mic dancehall style like a seasoned veteran. Tarrus Riley has been surrounded by music from an early age as the son of Jimmy Riley. His third album, Contagious is up for “Best Album/CD” and his single, “Good Girl Gone Bad” a duet with Konshens received a “Best Song” nod. Tarrus is also up for “Entertainer of the Year”, “Best Male Vocalist” “Recording Artist of the Year”, and “Most Culture/Educational Entertainer”.
Reggae veteran Freddie McGregor is nominated for “Most Consistent Entertainer,” while his sons Stephen(Producer of the Year) and Chino(Most Improved Entertainer) are nominated as well. Daville, son of Jah Thomas is nominated for “Best Male Vocalist”. Junior Reid’s sons, Andrew and Wadada Blood received a nod in “Most Improved Entertainer”. Femi Kuti, son of Nigerian legend Fela Kuti is nominated for the “Best African Entertainer.” Other leading IRAWMA contenders: Machel Montano (five nominations); Sean Paul and Macka Diamond (four nods each); Barbee, Beenieman and Vybz Kartel with three nominations each. Among the performers for the 29th IRAWMA, are: Julian Marley, Machel Montano, Queen Ifrica, Tony Rebel, Alison Hinds, Gramps Morgan, Barbee, Dean Fraser, Winsome Benjamin, Tarrus Riley, New Kingston Band, Mutabaruka, Dean Fraser, Brigadier Jerry, Awilo Longomba and a host of other international reggae, and world music superstars. In addition to accolades to Reggae music, the IRAWMAs recognizes artists in Gospel, Salsa, Latin, Reggaeton, Calypso, Soca, African, Soukous, Compas, Racine and Hip Hop. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to honor those who have made their mark globally in the Reggae and World Music industry,” says Ephraim Martin, president of Martin’s International and Associates.

MYSTAFYA REGGAE BAND REUNION SHOW NEVADA CITY, CA THIS FRIDAY
|
|
|
|
Who: MYSTAFYA reggae band
What: Reunion show
Where: Coopers Ale-works
When: 4/23/10 9pm
why: By fans demand
How much: $7
Years of fans request to reunite and perform again has finally come to fruition. Nevada County’s longest running and most successful reggae band, MYSTAFYA, will come together on April 23rd to give the community a reminder of why this band had such an impact on the local and world music sceen. Since disbanding in 2007, “we’ve had constant request to do a show, many from promoters but mainly from our loyal fans, ”says Scott Wilson, Manager and drummer for the band. “People miss this band dearly, and since all the band members stay in touch, we thought it’d be a good time to do a reunion show. What’s so great about this show is that we have the original line up minus the late, great, Kris Skidmore."
For 10 years, MYSTAFYA played to energetic packed clubs and venues throughout Northern California and Nevada. If you asked any reggae music fan who is the leaders in the genre, most likely MYSTAFYA has had the opportunity to be their opener. “When the band got together it was magic, right out of the shoot we were playing with the likes of Steel Pulse, Bunny Wailer, and Toots and the Maytals to name a few. We knew in 97’ we weren’t worthy of these honors and strived to become the the best band we could,” say’s Wilson. That effort paid off with numerous critically acclaimed tracks from both of their two CD’s, Come to Jam (99’) and Run Free(04’).
Reaching the status of famous in France, Germany, and Italy, MYSTAFYA was not able to take the many overseas tour offers,”we’re a bunch of dad's and businessmen, as much as we wanted to, our obligations were here at home.” Asked if he felt they missed out, Wilson replies, “no way, the loving response we get every time we play is validation of the impact and importance we’ve had here in our great musical area!” MYSTAFYA is playing at Coopers in Nevada City, CA on April 23rd, 9pm. $7 at the door. This will sell out. No advanced tickets available so get there early!

THE 22nd EPISODE OF NICHOLAS Da SILVA'S GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES 'DREAD AND ALIVE' FEATURING DREW MCINTOSH: JAMAICAN SUPER HERO

Dread & Alive....is an ongoing graphic novel series about Jamaican Super Hero Drew McIntosh. If you missed any episodes, click here to read:
Chapter Six
"It’s been a long time, my friend,” Cudjoe's rich baritone voice greeted Philip. The smile grew wider as he moved towards Philip with open arms. "Welcome home, Mon!"
As the two men embraced, more villagers gathered, chattering amongst themselves, eager and excited to catch a glimpse of their visitors.
"I’m glad to see you," Philip returned the greeting. "It’s good to be back home."
Cudjoe leaned back, his hands firmly on Philip's shoulders. "You haven’t change much."
Philip, giving that infectious laugh that was his alone, said, "You too, Mon … look at yourself. You keep getting younger everytime I see you.”
Cudjoe slapped his friend on the back, laughing along with him until the jubilation spread amongst the villagers. Soon, all were laughing but not everyone knew why.
"And I see you’ve brought visitors?" Cudjoe smiled, eyeing Maria.
Taking Maria's hand, Philip said, "This is my wife, Maria."
"She’s a strong woman," Cudjoe said, looking her over. "Nice to meet you."
Maria blushed and lowered her eyes. "It’s a pleasure to meet you," she said shyly. "I've heard so much about you from Philip."
"I trust that what you heard is good?” Cudjoe humorously asked.
"Nothing but good things," Maria assured him.
Cudjoe glanced at Drew, cowering behind his mother. He smiled at the boy's reserve. With the aid of his cane, he crouched in front of Drew.
"And who are you? Ahh ... don't tell me. You must be Drew."
Maria gave her son a little nudge. "Say hello to Cudjoe."
Drew hesitated for a moment before coming out from behind his mother, his gaze firmly focused on the ground. He stopped, then slowly looked up at Cudjoe. "Hello," he said quickly before letting his gaze return to study pebbles near his feet.
"Hello, Drew. We are going to be friends." Cudjoe extended his hand. "My name is Cudjoe."
Drew timidly looked at Cudjoe, struggling to find the nerve to take the offered hand. Finally, he shook his hands. As he stared at the majestic village chief, he noticed that Cudjoe too, had matted, woolly dreadlocks similar to his, but much thicker and longer. He also noticed the shiny medallion hanging around the village chief's neck, an object that immediate raised his curiosity.
Cudjoe, sensing Drew's interest in the medallion, lifted the bronze-colored object from his chest and presented it to Drew. "This is the sacred amulet of the Jamaican Maroons. It protects us from all of our enemies."
Holding the amulet in one hand, Drew ran his fingers over the raised surface, intrigued by the unique engraving of the face of a lion. “Why is there a lion on it?"
"That is the symbol of our people."
"Is this a special kind of lion?” Drew asked.
The depth of Drew's question startled Maria and Philip.
"This is the Conquering Lion of Judah," Cudjoe said.

CHEF MAYRA - IT'S ALL ABOUT THE AVOCADO
|
|
|
With Cinco de Mayo (Independence Day in Mexico), people will eat more luscious green-yellow avocados than on any other day of the year. The avocado fruit has enjoyed a centuries old reputation as an indulgent food with a seductively creamy smooth texture. Originating in parts of ancient Mexico, Central America, and South America, the avocado was once believed to be an aphrodisiac, and forbidden from young Aztec women and discouraged by parishioners.
Centuries later, the avocado is as much a staple in Mexican culture as butter is in American culture. And every year the avocado grows in international popularity. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the avocado ranks 14th among the most frequently consumed raw fruits in the United States.
But the buttery avocado is more than just delicious. A ripe avocado is a rich source of vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and heart healthy monounsaturated fats.
A serving of avocado (about 1/5 of the whole fruit) contains more protein, potassium, magnesium, folic acid, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, biotin, pantothenic acid, antioxidant vitamin E, and vitamin K than any fruit. Just to highlight a few of these nutrients, potassium content is higher in a serving of avocados than bananas. Potassium is a necessary mineral for proper electrolyte balance, muscle activity, nerve function and energy metabolism. Antioxidant vitamin E works to clear out harmful free radicals that are produced from the body's own metabolism and environmental factors. Free radicals damage cells and may be a cause of cancer, hearth disease, and a contributor to aging. And adequate folic acid intake in pregnant women not only aids in fetal and tissue cell development, but can also prevent cardiovascular disease. Other nutrients found in avocados include vitamin B6, vitamin C, and fiber.
Phytosterols in avocados inhibit cholesterol absorption and promote lower serum cholesterol levels, thus helping to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. One such phytosterol in particular, beta-sitosterol, is abundant in avocados, and is also widely prescribed as a cholesterol lowering drug. Beta-sitosterol has also been shown to reduce the signs of benign prostatic hypertrophy.
Oranges were previously believed to be the highest fruit source of beta-sitosterol, but new research shows that avocados contain over four times as much beta-sitosterol as oranges. Another reason why avocados are good for your heart is because of its fatty acid composition. The fats in avocados break down to roughly 60% from monounsaturated fat, 20% from polyunsaturated fat, and 20% from saturated fat. And the proportion of monounsaturated to saturated fat rises the more ripe the fruit is. Monounsaturated fats, like from nuts and olive oil, have been shown to lower levels of total and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, while maintaining the level of good high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Additionally, monounsaturated fats can help keep blood glucose levels in check in the diets of non-insulin dependent diabetics.
Yummy avocados are also cancer fighting foods. Avocados contain more lutein, a cancer fighting carotenoid, than any other fruit. Populations that eat foods rich in lutein seem to have low rates of prostate cancer. Lutein, also found in dark green vegetables like spinach and parsley, has been shown to protect against age related eye diseases such as macular degeneration and cataracts. Another anti-cancer component of avocados is glutathione. Glutathione, a tripeptide composed of amino acids glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine, functions as an antioxidant.
Populations that eat foods rich in glutathione have significantly lower rates of oral and pharyngeal cancer, however this correlation has only been found from raw food sources of glutathione, not cooked or processed. Avocados and asparagus are two of the richest natural sources of glutathione. Avocados are a healthy functional food that should be a staple in your diet, too. Avocados ripen naturally about a week after being harvested from the tree. When choosing avocados at the market, test ripeness by gently squeezing the fruit. A ripe and ready-to-eat avocado should yield to gentle pressure. If you buy under-ripe avocados, you can speed up the ripening process by putting them in a paper bag along with an apple. Storing avocados in the refrigerator will slow the ripening process. If you've got ripe avocados on the verge of over-ripening but aren't ready to eat them, mash each avocado with 1 teaspoon of lemon or lime juice and put it into a container. Lay plastic wrap directly on the exposed surface of the mashed avocado and lemon/lime juice before covering completely. Store in the refrigerator for up to two days or in the freezer for up to two months. Season right before you eat them.
Guacamole isn't the only way to enjoy your avocados. Slice them into salads and sandwiches, top them on omelets and chilis, stuff them into burritos and tacos, roll them into sushi and wraps, dip them with chips, use them in place of creamy fats in salad dressings, blend them with ice-cold nonfat milk and honey for a refreshing beverage, or even eat them right out of the shell with a spoon.
A natural powerhouse of nutrition, soft, ripe avocados are also a terrific fresh food to spoon-feed infants eating solids. Avocados make a great substitute for mayonnaise and as a bread and cracker spread like butter. One ounce of mayonnaise has over four times the calories and almost five times the saturated fat as an ounce of avocado. And one ounce of butter has more than four times the calories and a whopping 20.5 times the saturated fat as an ounce of avocado.
Avocados are easy to eat, easy to carry, and easy to prepare. And making the irresistible avocado a part of your diet is a delicious way to get essential vitamins and minerals while protecting yourself from cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other diseases...Pass the guacamole!"

TWO NEW SINGLES AND THREE CONTINENT TOUR FOR SEAN PAUL
|
|
|
|
Kingston, Jamaica:-With two new tracks and a three-continent tour for April, Jamaican dancehall superstar Sean Paul is keeping quite busy these days. Sean Paul, who returned from performances in Africa recently, is also toasting the success of his single with British-born pop sensation Jay Sean, Do You Remember, which is featured on the iconic pop music compilation Now That’s What I Call Music.
Sean Paul’s two newest singles, Fire Brigade and Down The Line, are destined as sure-fire club pleasers. Down The Line, produced by Jeremy Harding, is a reggae-flavoured slow-melody love song which is featured on his popular mixtape The Oddessy. The Don Corleone-produced Fire Brigade, however, is an unmistakable dancehall tune with all the up-tempo energy party lovers clamour for and that which Sean Paul has become famous for.
Sean Paul is rearing to hit the road and promote these two new tracks. “Working with Don and Jeremy is just amazing. They are creative people and good at what they do. I know anytime I go in the studio with them I leave with a good song. Down The Line is getting good reviews so far and so is Fire Brigade so its time to kick the promotion for these singles into high gear,” Sean Paul said.
He added that the singles will soon be available on iTunes, and that the producers were two of the producers who did tracks for his album Imperial Blaze. The album, his fourth, went on to make history on the charts as it became the first dancehall album to top the Billboard Rap/Hip Hop charts.
His newly released singles aside, the Grammy-winning megastar has been racking up the frequent flyer miles and performance hours. Sean Paul has performed in more than 80 countries in North, Central, and South America, Asia, Africa, and Europe.
Photo Credit: Jonathan Mannion Sean Paul will return to the dancehall-loving nation of Japan, where Imperial Blaze debuted at #1 selling over 50,000 copies in its first week. He has a string of appearances in Japan, before he heads to engagements in Columbia and Australia. These are hectic times for the artiste, who now sports a trendy Mohawk.
Sean Paul is a multi-platinum selling deejay many times over, and the most successful Jamaican artiste on the international charts. He’s had three #1 singles, five top ten hits, and even more chart entries over four worldwide best-selling albums, which have sold more than tens of millions of copies worldwide. In 2009, he copped the MOBO Award for Best Reggae Act, as well as, Best Reggae Artiste award at the Soul Train Awards. He adds those trophies to an impressive collection of awards that includes a Grammy, MTV Music Video Award, Billboard Music Award, American Music Award, MTV Europe Music Award, MOBO, BET Award and others.

Don Carlos was born and raised in Western Kingston, Jamaica in a very deprived district known as Waterhouse. Don Carlos began singing in 1973 as a member of Black Uhuru.
He sang alongside Garth Dennis, Derrick Simpson the leader of the trio. Don played a key role in the recordings of the highly acclaimed Love Crisis album, produced by Prince Jammy in 1977 which was later re-released as The Black Sounds of Freedom. After some time finding his sound as a soloist Carlos blossomed in May 1981 releasing the heavy cultural roots album Suffering for Negus Roots.
He has since become very popular in the live scene and has released twelve solo albums working alongside Gold, his backup vocalist and co writer. Some of his most notable albums include Harvest Time, Day to Day Living and Them Never Know a Natty Dread were released in 1982. Spread Out also released in 1982 commonly known now as Laser Beam had many fan favorites. Carlos still maintains his roots flavor and awesome melodies to this day; he continues to grow in popularity and still performs all over the world.
Kora are a New Zealand reggae, rock, dub & roots band, originally hailing from Whakatane. Four musical brothers from the Kora family, Laughton, Francis, Stuart and Brad, began playing together as a band in the early 1990s, winning the national Rockquest high school band competition in 1991 and the East Coast region Battle of the Bands three years running, earning a release on Tangata Records for their efforts. In early 2002 Kora's core members Laughton and Francis recorded a four song demo while on holiday in Queenstown, sharing songwriting duties with local muso Dan McGruer who also joined them on bass guitar and keyboards, and inviting visiting Madagascan tourist Lilou to lay down vocals on the song "Barely Can See". Kora's four track demo caught the attention of Wellington-based record label LOOP Recordings Aota in late 2002, leading to the release of "Barely Can See" on the label's LOOP Select 004 compilation CD in December. In 2007, the group released their acclaimed self titled album, much to the adoration of their loyal following.

I Ancient : : Mirror Riddim
|
|
FreeDem is a song that was written by I Ancient and produced by GoldCup Records, an Italy based Record Company. FreeDem is on the Mirror Riddim Compilation CD and was inspired by world issues such as police brutality, poverty, genocide/ homicide, wars, and other problems that affect the people of the world today. I Ancient's main purpose with this single is to voice his opinion on the inequality and injustice of the Government (Babylon System) and their conspiracy theories. Living in these perilous times, I Ancient's mission is to warn the people to break free from mental slavery and return to their roots (repatriation) and the natural ways of living. FreeDem is a positive movement tune that is sure to uplift the people and enlighten the youths. Whenever you look around the world and see the struggle, listen to this song and it will remind you that FreeDem out of Babylon is a Must!

Prayer for the Earth
Thank You for Mother Earth, our home.
Deep within my core I know that You, Mother Earth and I are One.
We are strands, woven closer than the finest silk.
My fate is hers, and hers is mine.
Whatever befalls her
will also fall upon me, my friends, my family, and my children.
Therefore, let the power of my mind be multiplied exponentially
by all who read and speak this prayer.
Across the Web of Humanity and in this precious moment,
help us unite our minds with You, on behalf of Mother Earth.
For her pulse throbs within us; her seas ebb and flow in our veins.
Her elements comprise our bodies and we are extensions of her.
We know what she needs, dear Lord, for You fill us with truth.
So we rise up, now, into energies of truth and loving stewardship.
You, Lord, guide us in touching our mother planet with love.
For she is not mute or unfeeling rock.
She moves and breathes and feels the weight of us upon her.
Like every loving mother she senses our hurts and struggles.
She feels our meanness and rejoices in our goodness.
She loves us as we love our own children.
And she calls to us now for help.
Nurtured on her bosom, we answer her call with loving action.
We commit to changing all conditions unworthy of her, or of You.
By Your Grace and through Your Guidance
we discard what is destructive and wasteful from our lives,
including bad behaviors.
Joyfully we recycle the spent, fix the broken, restore the wasted.
We beautify the ugly from without and within.
We heal ourselves and the earth.
Everything we touch, from this moment on, we make beautiful.
As we do right by Mother Earth, our love for her
—and hers for us— fills us with great joy.
As we cleanse and beautify our physical lives
so do we cleanse and beautify our minds.
You reach inside us and show us how.
At our request, the greatest minds among are inspired.
They give us safe, clean and renewable energy sources.
At our demand, our manufacturing processes are transformed.
They sustain our planet's life so she thrives.
By Your Grace, our rain forests are now protected and restored.
You guide us in voluntarily reducing Earth's human population.
And each animal on Earth now has, within us, a new friend.
As You guide us in taking action appropriate to our real needs,
we find we are willing to change, and we find peace.
We have the intellect, intuition, love and power to save our Earth.
And we use these gifts in full force now, to her benefit and ours.
For Earth deserves our reverence.
She birthed us; she gave us her air and water.
She grew the food we needed to thrive.
We now repay her generosity with delight.
We dance with joy to the transcendent music of Your spheres.
Thank You, God, for working through me for the good of all.
Thank You for the intensity of Your love.
Every cell in my body leaps in joy for You.
As I feel my connection to Mother Earth, her health and beauty
—like my own—expands.
Thank You, Glorious God.
Earth is healed and all life lives in harmony.
Alleluia! And so it is. Amen.
