We Have a Beautiful Mother

by Alice Walker

We have a beautiful mother
Her hills are buffaloes
Her buffaloes hills.

We have a beautiful mother
Her oceans are wombs
Her wombs oceans.

We have a beautiful mother
Her teeth the white stones
at the edge of the water
the summer grasses her plentiful hair.

We have a beautiful mother
Her green lap immense
Her brown embrace eternal
Her blue body everything we know.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Her beautiful blue body and all that grows and is nurtured by the marshes and estuaries in the Gulf coast are threatened by this terrible oil gusher.
I received this message from a friend in Pensacola, Florida:  "We have a nasty oil spill in our gulf…pray, meditate, visualize that it will stay put until it can be burned, sopped up and contained…collective consciousness at work.  Think it, manifest it."  And I would add to that, "hold our government and corporations responsible for safeguarding our mother earth - our health, our resources, our livelihoods."
 Message from Karen
Dear Friends,
What a blessing it is to enjoy the clear sky and bright green colors of spring.  The smell of lilacs and sounds of peepers, birds and lawn mowers.  Today is a very good day.
When I was first planning this newsletter, I intended it as a wellness issue.  In part because I'm in the wellness business.  And in part because many around me are in the process of healing.
In the moment, my brother is in the process of healing.  In January he had, what we now know, a second stroke.  He had a stroke last summer which went undetected because his symptoms seemed more like an false heart attack, sometimes associated as an anxiety attack, than a stroke.  Then in January, as he was driving to work, he started to have trouble seeing.  He went to the emergency room and was treated for acute hypertension - and sent home.  Two days later, he was taken from work to the emergency room where it was discovered that he had had a stroke - 2 days before!
Tim is 49.  He's in good shape, doesn't smoke, has some risk factors for stroke - high blood pressure and high cholesterol, both controlled with medication.  Once it was determined that he had a stroke then came the search for how and why.  It was discovered that he had a hole in his heart, from birth.  The doctors think that the hole in his heart contributed to the strokes.
The hole was repaired with an amazing minimally invasive devise which closed the hole and will eventually be covered over by the body's own tissue.  As it turned out, he had a reaction to the devise which caused him to have something like muscle cramps in the heart.  And a bad reaction to medication.
And he learned first hand that even though he was seeing medical experts, he was the one having the experiences.  His experiences were atypical in several ways.  He had to advocate for his own health care.  And because of that, he is now receiving the correct medication.  In a few months, the device will be fully integrated with his own body tissue.  Last week he was in the hospital and this week he's back at work part-time and feeling better every day.
Finally, it looks like he's really on the mend.  He's expected to make a full recovery.  Because of where the stroke happened, it did not affect mobility or speech which is what we often think of when we learn that someone has had a stroke.
Why am I telling you this?  Because we all have to be our own health care advocates.  Because it happened out of the blue to a fairly healthy, 49 year old man who didn't even know that he had a hole in his heart.  (We all have an opening in the heart between the right and left atria at birth which closes up, in 80% of us.)  And he presented with atypical stroke symptoms so he didn't receive the correct diagnosis or treatment when he first went to the emergency room.  (p.s.  Tim gave me permission to write about his story.)
Even so, it's important for all of us to recognize the signs of stroke because there are some common or typical signs and we can do something to help.
And the other reason I wanted to tell Tim's story - he has health insurance.  I wonder whether he would have gotten anywhere near the same treatment if he didn't.  We all know someone who doesn't have health insurance.  I hope that we can agree that everyone needs and should have access to affordable health care and so too, health insurance.
Regular practice of yoga is known to have many positive health benefits, which can make some trips to the doctor and some medications unneccessary.  Just do it!
Happy Mother's Day to all you mothers.  Peace and love to you, Karen
Home Practice Meditation
This five-part meditation was developed by senior teachers at Kripalu Center. It's a powerful invitation to connect with the present when you're calm, and an amazing aid when you're upset.  Source:  www.yogajournal.com
BREATHE
How much can you feel your breath right now? Focusing on your breathing is an essential practice that draws your awareness inward and helps you experience the presence and flow of energy.
Take a few slow, deep breaths and notice how each one moves through you.
How much do your lungs and belly expand on the inhalation and soften on the exhalation? As you become absorbed in your breathing, you'll be more aware of the sensations surrounding the rising and falling of your belly. You'll notice the sensation of breath moving through your lungs and trachea.
As you deepen your focus, you'll notice the flow of air moving through the sinus cavities in your head. You'll feel the breath moving through your nostrils. You may even notice that one nostril is more open than the other.
In your own time, shift your concentration from controlling your breath to simply watching your body breathe. Is the sensation of the breath predominant in one area—the belly, the throat, the nostrils?
Rest your awareness on one particular area of the breath, and when you notice your mind wandering, bring it back again and again to the direct experience of your body breathing in this moment.
RELAX
How much more can you relax right now? Relax the muscles of your face. Relax your lips and tongue. Relax your throat and neck. Relax your shoulders and arms, elbows and palms. Relax your belly and lower back. Relax your hips, knees, ankles. Relax the soles of your feet.
The more you relax, the more you deepen awareness of sensation. As you release your awareness into your body, observe who you are as a being of energy.
FEEL
How much more can you feel right now? Feel the points of contact between your body and your cushion or chair. Feel the vibration of the sounds around you. Feel the texture and temperature of the air touching your skin.
As you focus on feeling, you may find areas of tension, stagnation, or congestion. You may encounter surprisingly strong new sensations. See if you can soften around those areas.
Let your sense of feeling move beyond physical sensation. Feel your heart and the state of your emotional body. Sense the general feeling tone of your body and the quality of presence. Acknowledge who you are as a being of energy.
WATCH
What are you noticing right now? As you breathe, relax, and feel, invoke a quality of spacious awareness. Sense who you are as a witness; be a scientist observing phenomena arising in and around you.
Notice the rational mind that serves to compare, judge, and seek understanding, and in your own way notice the quality of awareness beyond the rational mind.
ALLOW
How much more can you allow your experience to be exactly what it is? What would happen if you added nothing to this moment and renounced the need to change anything?
Awareness has been described as a vast, spacious sky. Feelings, thoughts, and sensations constantly change form and shape like weather patterns passing through.
Sense who you are with no preferences. Be present to the process of your life unfolding moment by moment.
A Vote for Synergy is a Vote for Children and Families
I've been teaching yoga as part of a yoga and social skills program for children with autism spectrum, learning disabilities and sensory processing challenges.  The program, www.connectwithsynergy.com,  was developed by Brian Armstrong and Kate O'Boyle, educational professionals with experience working with children and families.
Synergy Center Corporation is currently negotiating an optimal location for its first center in New London County, Connecticut where they will build a cutting edge therapeutic activity center.
They have also applied for the Pepsi Refresh 250K grant.  They were chosen, among hundreds of other programs, to be entered into a contest where the top 2 vote getters win.
I'm asking anyone who may be interested in this project to vote for Synergy.  The link is in the newsletter below.  Brian and Kate have the vision and energy to make this program happen.  The 250K will make it happen faster.  Information about the project is at the voting link.
If you think this is a great idea, we'd love it if you would share it with your friends and colleagues.
Support Services and Indoor Play will never be the same after Synergy Center makes its mark in Connecticut and Rhode Island.
Goals
  • Enhance the quality of life for those with disabilities
  • Help individuals with disabilities and weakened health conditions
  • Provide recreation, therapy, and education for all individuals
  • Offer a state of the art center for therapeutic practicioners
  • Resource center for individuals, families, schools, and the community
Please remember to vote - Every Day! We've moved from #209 to #142 in the last 5 days.  The top 2 vote getters win.  We want to be one of them.
Please support this project.
Mantra for Overcoming Obstacles
Om Gum Ganapatayei Namaha
om gum guh-nuh-puh-tuh-yei nahm-ah-ha
"Om and salutation to the remover of obstacles for which Gum is the seed."
Gum is a masculine seed sound for Ganapathi, an energy of the benevolent, elephant-headed god Ganesha, which removes obstacles and brings success in endeavors.  To remove obstacles, repeat the mantra 108 times a day for 40 days.
You may find that the mantra becomes a constant background sound and you may find that you feel calm and at peace. For a more intense the practice, increase the number of repetitions and the number of times per day, for example morning and evening.
Resale and Reuse - Music CDs - $5
My collection of CDs has outgrown my space.  I will be selling them individually, as is, for $5 each.  All monies will the added to the Murray Barnes fund to pay for a new centerpiece for the Eli Maze labyrinth at St. James Church in Preston.
Murray attended classes there for several years, acting as unofficial greeter and teaching assistant.  We miss him and his presence is still with us.
I will bring the CDs to classes until they are gone.  Please bring correct amount of cash or write your check to "St. James Church" with "Murray Barnes" written in the memo line.
