CONSTRUCT2010 & The 54th CSI Annual Convention
CONSTRUCT2010 & The CSI Annual Convention delivered a high-energy event last week in Philadelphia with 250-plus exhibitors, 75-plus education sessions, and thousands of attendees. Attendance at the event was up 6% over CONSTRUCT2009 in Indianapolis.
“The venue was fabulous, you should have been there if you weren't,” Loren Berry, FCSI, CDT, said. “The product show was high quality, I learned something at every booth! Thanks to the product representatives!”
Ralph Pitman, CSI, CDT, also posted his candid photos from the event on the CSI Indianapolis website. (Pitman asks that if you use one of his photos in your chapter or region newsletter, or other communication, you credit him for the image.)
Education
“Irreverent Bjarke Ingels proposes that the avant garde become collaborative & evolutionary,” Vivian E. Volz, RA, CSI, CCS, LEED AP, tweeted ( see her tweets). “There's a rational exuberance to both presentation and design.”
CONSTRUCT2010’s theme – Foresight is Power – was evident in sessions covering BIM, specifications, sustainability and other topics, and had participants talking all week. Christopher E. Grimm, CSI, CCS, LEED AP, was among the attendees who tweeted about what they were learning in different sessions. ( Read his tweets.)
“To build something, somebody's gotta price the job & buy materials. The qualitative info is in the specs. SPie standardizes info,” Grimm tweeted, while attending Building Information Libraries & Specifiers Property Information Exchange. “Kudos to @csiconstruction and Hanley Wood -- another great convention for specifiers, architects, engineers, manufacturers and FM's.”

Exhibits
The exhibit hall, a collaboration between CSI and the TFM Show, offered demonstrations, trend-setting products and new ideas for solving existing problems in construction.
“I learned valuable and interesting things from some of the product reps at booths farthest from the center,” David Bishton, CSI, CCS, said. “Never overlook the ends of the aisles or the booth paths less traveled.”
“Guess I'll leave the CONSTRUCT show floor before the drayage crews carry me out,” Volz tweeted.
CSI Convention Activities
CSI recognized dozens of members with honors and awards for their work to bring CSI’s mission to the industry. See a list of award winners.
“Receiving CSI's Distinguished Service award at the CSI black tie gala was a real honor on top of being able to see and visit with so many friends,” Paul Bertram, Jr., FCSI, CDT, LEED AP, said.
CSI also offered leadership training in CSI’s Leader Lounge and in a two-day seminar for Chapter Presidents and Presidents-elect.
“Learned great ideas to implement in Indy at CONSTRUCT such as exploring lunch meetings in addition to our evening meetings to draw younger crowd,” tweeted D. Blake Wagner, CSI, CCCA, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, incoming president of the CSI Indianapolis Chapter. ( Read his tweets.)
CSI’s Annual Meeting drew hundreds of members and produced excitement about the Institute’s future.
“Here at CSI Annual Meeting talking with old friends,” Brian E. Trimble, PE, CSI, CDT, LEED AP, tweeted. “I have learned a lot this week.”
President-elect Dennis J. Hall, FCSI, CCS, CCCA, FAIA, SCIP, presented CSI’s new 2011-15 Strategic Plan at the CSI Annual Meeting. CSI’s new mission statement, “To advance building information management and education of project teams to improve facility performance,” will be supported by the following values:
- A diversified membership base of allied professionals involved in the creation and management of the built environment
- Continuous development and transformation of standards and formats
- Education and certification of professionals to improve project delivery processes and
- Creation of practice tools to assist users throughout the facility lifecycle
Members at the Annual Meeting also voted to reintroduce a proposed Bylaws Amendment to change the “Professional Member” and “Industry/Associate Member” classifications to a single “Member” classification on the February 2011 CSI ballot. The proposal, which narrowly missed a two-thirds majority vote in 2010, does not affect dues levels or other membership categories (ex. Student, Intermediate, Emeritus). Chapters and regions will still be able to track member types as CSI will continue to capture occupation codes on membership application and renewal forms. The goal of the amendment is to create a single, inclusive membership classification and reduce any confusion for prospective members.
It was a great week of education and camaraderie for CSI’s members.
“At an amazing dinner with friends, old and new,” Brent Williams, CSI, CDT, tweeted (read his tweets). “The best thing about CSI is the relationships.”

National CAD Standard Brings Efficiency to Facility Planning
"Many parties are involved over the lifecycle of a large institutional facility, from the project’s administrators and A/E firm to the general contractor and facility management department. Exchanging electronic design and construction data can be challenging between these groups if documents are not formatted the same way. For more than a decade, the United States National CAD Standard® (NCS) has provided a structure for organizing the appearance of drawing sets so that electronic design data and printed output is presented in the same manner across the lifecycle of the facility." David Stutzman, CSI, CCS, AIA, SCIP, writes on the SpecWords blog: “The CSI Specifying Practice Group this month was led by Keith Pardoe, Director of Technical Services for the Door and Hardware Institute (DHI). Keith explained the role that DHI is to promote good specification practices. DHI teaches hardware consultants the principles espoused by the CSI Project Resource Manual to help ensure hardware specifications conform to the recognized industry best practices.” Read this blog
